As this episode of Six Four begins, Michelle (Vinette Robinson) asks Piers (Toby Stephens) whether their daughter has been there. He suspects Michelle told Olivia the truth. Piers hasn’t seen her, but he’ll get in touch with her now. Bill Martin (Brian McCardie) tells Chris O’Neill (Kevin McKidd) it is sad seeing him stuck in the past like this. He wants to know where Jim Mackie is, but Chris doesn’t want to tell him. Chris claims they just stopped looking and blamed Jim. Brian says Jim was the obvious suspect and he knew that so he pointed the finger at them. He warns Chris that he should stop whatever he is doing for his own good.
As Chris leaves, he calls Philip to say there is something weird going on. A team moves into the Wallace house and begins setting up their operations. Riyaz Mansoor (Taqi Nazeer) introduces himself to Robert and Pauline while explaining he’ll be running the investigation. Philip (Andrew Whipp) learns that the Crime Agency is setting up and Annabel’s phone is being analyzed. Gordon Byrne (Alex Ferns) shows other officers around the area where the kids go to drink and start fires. He shows them the tire tracks and where he found the phone. They suspect it is someone local since they knew the road was there. Gordon agrees to get the security camera footage from the nearby camera for them.
Annabel Wallace (Iona Anderson) knows Jim Mackie (James Cosmo) is outside so she tries to get him to speak to her. Jim doesn’t let her out nor does he speak to her. Piers questions what they’re going to do with Michelle or Sarah Jones. She warns him that it’ll be over for him if he harms a police officer, but Piers says she hasn’t been a police officer for a long time. Michelle says he never knew anything about her before learning that Piers has COPD. Since it is terminal, he doesn’t have anything to lose. Piers asks who Olivia thinks is her real father. Michelle says a good man. He suspects that good man found out the truth and left her all alone. Piers says he can’t wait to meet his daughter. Michelle attacks him and the other man before trying to escape with the picture of Olivia.
Chris goes home and looks around. He is shocked to find Olivia (Eubha Akilade) in the closet. Annabel begins looking for a way to escape. After Gordon delivers the security footage, he overhears that the ransom call could’ve come from Northern Ireland. As for Stuart Simpson (Lorne MacFadyen), he won’t say anything until he has a brief. Chris tries to find out where Olivia went. Olivia complains that her parents have been lying to her all her life. She came back for her stuff and plans to leave. Olivia reveals Michelle told her when they were having an argument about his stupid affair. Chris insists he only found out today that he isn’t her dad so he never lied to her.
He doesn’t know who her dad is though. Olivia argues this is for them to sort out. If they do, she might come back. Chris thinks he can stop her from leaving, but Olivia doesn’t think so. She warns him not to make a scene or she’ll actually disappear. Chris pleads with her to take her phone so they’ll have a way to contact her. Michelle calls Chris worried because Olivia was never there. Chris wants to know why she’d tell Olivia he wasn’t her father. When Michelle learns Olivia was home, she wants to talk to her not realizing she is already gone again. Chris argues he couldn’t stop her because she doesn’t want to be there. He urges her to come home. Robert Wallace (Richard Coyle) discusses politics before Bill Martin arrives.
Bill says Mackie isn’t at home. He is going to leave Mohamed with Robert so he can keep them in touch. He is in touch with Philip and the journalist is out of the picture. Bill urges him not to panic because they will find her. Only one car was spotted on CCTV the night Annabel was nabbed. The vehicle was tagged by ANPR on a police car 50 miles away a couple of days ago. Prior to that, it has never been seen in this region before. Although it was sold at auction a few weeks back, there is no new keeper registered. Jim tells Annabel that he made her some tea. He tells her to stay on the bed because he is going to unlock the door. Jim tells her his name before she questions why he won’t talk to her. Annabel says people at school don’t like her and her parents don’t care about her either.
When she mentions that her dad is rich, Jim says it isn’t about money. Instead, it is about truth and justice. He knows what happened to Jim’s daughter and he has lied about it for years and years. Once Annabel learns he is Julie Mackie’s dad, she says that has nothing to do with her. Alison Hamilton and Dave Barr attend an interview with Stuart Simpson. He doesn’t want to answer anything about his debt or Annabel Wallace. After consulting with his solicitor, he says Annabel did tell him something and he tried to sell it to a journalist. The mother told the father that he needed to tell Jim Mackie that his daughter was dead. Philip learns about the car and the phone signals. They discuss whether there could be any involvement by a loyalist group. Philip says it wouldn’t make sense geographically.
Alison mentions that the SNP leadership has been cozying up to Sinn Fein recently. Philip admits they can’t run anything out at this stage before he learns Chris is in the building. Chris tells him that someone scared the journalist off the story. He goes on to say Jim is missing. Philip reminds him he didn’t ask him to go to Jim’s house. Chris explains that Bill Martin was also there and he also spoke to Gary McLean’s mother. Chris thinks they covered something up because Gary made a recording of the call. Philip punches him. He warns him to remember who he is and who he is talking to. When Chris gets on top of his brother, Philip begins laughing. A woman enters to tell Philip they need him upstairs. Before he leaves, he instructs Chris to get himself together.
Chris pleads with him to tell him the truth about the call. Philip eventually tells him that there were no calls. Later, Chris reads through Gary’s file and sees that Steven Bryce was convicted of his murder. He takes a picture of his address. Chris visits him while pretending to be there for a delivery. Once he makes it inside, he tells Steven he wants to know why he killed Gary McLean. Steven says he won’t tell him anything because his boys will kill him if he does. Chris notices the Bible next to him. Chris says he is Catholic and they don’t believe in God. Instead, they believe in sentimentality and organized crime. He finds drugs hidden in the Bible. Steven tells him that one of the policemen killed Gary and locked him up for it. Gordon looks at his gun.
Steve claims they would’ve killed him for an accident he had with a teenage girl. They sent him to steal some documents from a safe and the lassie wasn’t supposed to be there. He stopped to stop her, but she fell and hit her head. Chris thinks he is talking about Julie Mackie. Steven says some guys came and took her body away before her mom and dad could come back. The guy who hired him to do the robbery told him to make it look like a kidnapping. When he phoned the house the first time, he was just doing what he was told. Chris eventually forces him to say that Robert Wallace hired them. Gordon leaves his patch on his desk and leaves the office. Philip learns what Stuart told the police about Annabel.
Annabel yells for Jim before apologizing for what her father did to him. She says she hates her dad too and she heard him talk to her mom about Julie. As Jim begins unlocking the door, Annabel prepares to attack him with a brick. Jim asks if she knows who he is working for. He also asks about Six Four. Jim claims her father knew Julie was dead and never told him. He reveals he intends to bring Robert there so he can force him to tell the truth. When Jim turns around, Annabel hits him in the back of the head and knocks him down. She runs for help and finds Gordon nearby. Jim joins them in the car before Gordon tries to take her back to the shed.
Annabel runs away and hits her head on a rock when she falls to the ground. Gordon is worried about her as the episode ends.
Six Four Review
The third episode of Six Four offered a lot of revelations although not all of them were unexpected. In particular, the show was somewhat alluding to the fact that Gordon was involved well before the final reveal of the episode. The story really doesn’t seem that original, but it is interesting enough to keep viewers around.
The storylines could probably be juggled more effectively since I had forgotten all about Michelle and whatever she is doing in the last 10 minutes or so. Six Four hasn’t been bad. The soundtrack is enjoyable, the performances are pretty good, and the story is compelling enough to finish the entire series.
The biggest issue is that it is too easy to be indifferent about the characters due to the lack of real character development from the beginning. The third episode was possibly the best yet so it scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Six Four are available on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
