As the episode begins, we see Grace (Olive Gray) waiting at the police station while Claire (Suranne Jones) tells Nelly (Lennie James) Jody asked for him. He seems surprised that Jody (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) wants to speak to him alone and Claire says that is the only thing she has been talking about for over a year and a half. When Nelly sits down with his daughter, she tells him that Dylan knew he would find Jody. Nelly says that Dylan is a good mate before Jody thanks him for finding her. Barry and Claire listen to their conversation from the hallway before Nelly tells his daughter about Grace. Barry wants to stop the conversation when Nelly goes on about taking Gideon to court but Claire won’t let him.
He begins walking downstairs and calls for Nelly. Seconds later, Nelly tells his daughter that he is there for her and will help in any way he can. When he goes downstairs, Claire and Barry insist it is not a good idea for Jody to follow the same path Grace did since she tried to kill herself. Claire tells Nelly that he needs to take his place now. She explains that it is up to her and Barry to decide what is best but Nelly can fit in where he can. Nelly agrees with that before leaving. Once he gets into his vehicle, he receives a call from Grace who tells him that she hates him before Claire checks on Jody. Her daughter says that the bad men threatened to kill her mother if she didn’t cooperate with them. Jody tells her mother about the things he said before Nelly visits Zita (Camilla Beeput).
She asks for her key before Nelly tries to smooth things over and trying to get Zita to admit that she misses him. She explains that her son comes first and Nelly hands over the key. He says Zita missed him and that he was good with her son. When Nelly leaves, he runs into DS O’Halloran (Nadine Marshall) who wants to know why Grace wants him to be there during her interview tomorrow. They go back and forth a bit before scheduling the interview for the following day and Nelly promises that he’ll be there. In the morning, Nelly gets a call from Jody asking him if he meant he would help her. She hands the phone over to Claire who texts him an address. The appointment is scheduled for the same time as Grace’s interview.
Nelly leaves home while Jody and Claire sit down with DS Pip and the detectives prepare to interview Grace. We go back and forth with both parties waiting for Nelly to arrive. In the end, he fulfills his promise to his daughter and joins her for the interview. Grace learns that Nelly isn’t coming and the interview begins seconds later. After that, Jody begins telling the woman about the things she went through and how she was tricked. Grace is asked about a few things and she says no comment. Jody begins telling everyone about a friend who also took advantage of her but she doesn’t want to describe the man. He is the one who picked her up on the night of her kidnapping. She says she doesn’t know the man’s name before Grace is shown evidence in Gideon’s murder.
Then, she is asked about the knife before being told that they’ll ask for her to be held without bail and charged with the murder of Gideon Charles. Bernie (Alice May Feetham) visits Melon (Stephen Graham) so she can pick up some of her clothes. After a quick chat, Bernie leaves and returns to the apartment complex. Nelly speaks with Shola and learns that Grace doesn’t want to speak with him so he tells her to send Grace a message. He wants her to know that he isn’t done yet. He leaves and begins looking at his list of possible locations before visiting several lock and key shops. He eventually finds one with a Scottish guy named Paul and he thinks he has found the man he has been looking for. Paul wants Nelly to leave so he grabs a knife.
Paul knocks Nelly to the ground and threatens to take his eye if he doesn’t stay away. Nelly recollects himself before leaving. Later that night, Nelly goes to the pub and hangs out with Stace (Susan Lynch), Tam (Jason Flemyng), Daisy (Remmie Milner), Goz (Thomas Coombes), and the others. He is surprised to find that Jennifer (Lesley Manville) is waiting for him so he sits down with her. Jennifer explains that she wants to do what she can to help Grace since Gideon caused all of this. She believes he is responsible for his murder too. He believes Jennifer is doing this on her way out and she admits she hasn’t decided where she is going to go yet. Nelly gets the knife a few seconds later and puts it in his car.
Nelly joins Jody for another interview and she wants to do it on her own this time. Claire and Nelly wait outside while Jody’s interview carries on until Nelly decides to leave. Nelly drives around before stopping and unwrapping the knife and Jody’s interview continues. Nelly visits Paul’s shop again only to find a note saying that the store is closed until further notice. Goz asks Nelly if he is going to tell him what has happened but Nelly says he is alright. He says that he found Paul but he blew it because he didn’t listen to Shola and thought he was clever than he was. The conversation is stopped with Jody arrives with her family. She is quickly introduced to everyone else and the celebrations begin. Nelly pulls Bernie to the side and says he had a chat with the one Melon went off with.
Bernie says she wants to know about it so Nelly says it is best to hear it from her. He goes outside and calls someone while Jody continues meeting with Nelly’s friends. Then, Zita tells Nelly that her son asked about him today because he wants to make sure that they’re still friends. She encourages him to stop by and visit him. Moments later, Nelly and the others start taking pictures with Jody. This goes on until Jody spots a picture of Paul Nelly snapped on his phone. She freaks out after recognizing him as the man who kidnapped her. Nelly tells Claire about Paul and trying to track him down. Nelly finds out that Paul drove his daughter from the library. Jody and her family leave after that.
Back inside, Melon watches as Bernie speaks with the woman in question. Bernie sits down with Melon for a drink seconds later. Nelly finds Stace vaping and Nelly says he is done for the day. Nelly returns to his room and watches as everyone leaves the pub. In the morning, he calls Jennifer and says he has figured out how she can help Grace. He walks Zita’s son to school after that. They agree to be mates and hug. Then, Nelly visits Zita and kisses her. He kisses her again before leaving. Then, Grace gets a visit from her solicitor. Nelly goes to the police station and speaks with Shola. He tells her about the red car outside and how it is connected with Jody. He also gives her the woman’s driver’s license and cellphone. He gives her the information found in the glove box before showing her the coat he was wearing when Gideon was killed.
It has a red bloodstain on it. Nelly insists he was responsible for Gideon’s murder. He says that Gideon was in the house when Grace was there so he had to fight Gideon off to get her out. We see Nelly planting his fingerprints on the knife before telling Shola that they’ll only find his prints on it. He says that Grace didn’t do it and he apologizes for not telling much sooner. He offers to make an official statement on tape so the detective turns it on and the episode ends.
Save Me Review
It is impossible to say that this season of Save Me was near the quality of the previous season. Some of the episodes were lackluster and others were boring. Nevertheless, there were a few that were very good. The finale pulled everything together and wrapped everything up. I am sure a lot of people are going to be disappointed with the finale and some the season in general. I didn’t expect the ending so I appreciate the twist at the end. However, I question why Nelly called Jennifer and what he had in mind for her.
How is she going to help Grace? Is she going to take her away? Will Nelly go down for the murder or will he somehow get off on self-defense? I feel like the episode left us hanging a lot. The season was nowhere near perfect but it was still much better than many others. If you watched the first and enjoyed it, you’ll likely feel compelled to stick with this one even though it has some rough spots here and there. The finale was decent but I wish there was more. It scores a 7 out of 10. Previous recaps of Save Me are now available on Reel Mockery.

Hey guys. The kids name was Samson… Zita and Nellie just keep referring to him as “son” short for Samson.
Good to know. I thought I heard it a few times but not enough for it to stick. Thanks for chiming in! 🙂
Hi guys I absolutely loved this, both season’s, however maybe my mind is a bit twisted, but my take on the season 2 finale was this. Think back, everyone had gathered in the palm tree to meet Jodie and took photos as she was looking through Nelly’s phone she apparently saw a photo of Paul and ran out the pub, however she had always said there were 2 people in the car when she was picked up and just before she ran out, Melon walked into the pub!!! So what really scared her so much? Maybe I’m just thinking this way to set the scene for a 3rd season. What do you think?
