At the beginning of the episode, Nelly (Lennie James) stands on a rooftop with Grace (Olive Gray) while they speak about Gideon’s murder. Grace says that she cannot stop seeing the knife in Gideon. Nelly tells her that they’re going to work this out piece by piece before Grace admits she is glad Gideon is gone. Nelly tells her not to say stuff like that since it’ll sound like she did it. He encourages Grace to remember who else was there with him. After the intro, Nelly speaks to Zita (Camilla Beeput) about Grace being scared. He admits he believes her but Zita seems a bit skeptical. Grace listens to their conversation while Nelly pleads with Zita to let her stay for the night.
Melon (Stephen Graham) wakes Bernie (Alice May Feetham) to tell her that he has finished. He shows her the paint on the wall so she can help pick out the pink she prefers most. Bernie doesn’t seem as excited as Melon. Then, Nelly takes Zita’s child to school before meeting up with Goz (Thomas Coombes) moments later. Goz explains that Luke used to say Nelly didn’t need enemies because all of his friends hated him. Goz isn’t happy that Nelly made him lie to the police for him and never checked with him first. Nelly isn’t worried about it but Goz wants to know where Nelly went. He tells Goz that Grace needed to be picked up.
Nelly lies about where he picked her up and he encourages Goz to stick with what he has said. He also says that Grace is still being shafted by Gideon even though he is dead. He says that Goz’s word is giving him time to do something good for Grace. Goz wants to see what Daisy (Remmie Milner) has to say about it. Meanwhile, Bernie thinks about her relationship with Melon and the things he has done before Nelly returns to Zita’s place. Zita tells him that Grace has been quiet so far. Zita says she’ll take care of her kid because Nelly is going to be busy with Grace. He checks on her moments later and Grace believes Zita hates her. Grace takes a bath moments later.
She recalls the moment she was raped before telling Nelly how she deals with it. She also tells him about Paul being with Gideon yesterday. Nelly tries to find out more about Paul so Grace gives him a description of the man. She tells Nelly about the man’s uniform she found in his bag, his age, and other things. Nelly prepares to leave before telling Grace to tell Zita he went for cigarettes if she gets back before he does. Nelly goes with Goz and tries to get in touch with Paul. He visits several hardware stores in hopes of finding Paul but doesn’t find anything. Meanwhile, Melon returns home and finds that Bernie has left. She shows up at Daisy’s place with her luggage and Daisy lets her in moments later.
Bernie tells Daisy that she needs a minute away from Bernie because she feels odd around him since they’re having a girl. Daisy promises not to tell anyone about it before Bernie says she is going to stay with her sister for a bit. Nelly and Goz continue their search until Goz gets a call from Daisy. He tells Nelly that they have to leave because Daisy needs the car. They return home. Later that night, Daisy takes Bernie to her sister’s place. In the morning, Nelly wakes up next to Zita. Nelly doesn’t want to have sex since Grace is staying with them. Zita says that this is one of the reasons she needs to leave. Nelly meets up with Goz seconds later and they head to another hardware store.
Nelly speaks with a woman and tries to get her to help him track down Paul. Nelly encourages her to check the employee database for information about Paul but she doesn’t want to do that. Back at home, Grace changes her shirt, smokes a cigarette, and gets drunk. Next, Claire (Suranne Jones) meets up with Tam (Jason Flemyng) and the shrink. They chat about the thing that Frank wanted to pass on. They go back and forth about whether Claire thinks Jody might be dead before she leaves. Tam offers to take her back to his place for a drink. Claire tells him that she doesn’t want to be Jody to be dead but she does some days. She says she felt like she tripped and fell when Jody died. She couldn’t stop falling.
Tam comforts Claire before Zita returns home and finds Grace drunk and listening to music. She takes her kid next door. Daisy gets a visit from DS O’Halloran (Nadine Marshall) seconds later. O’Halloran tells Daisy that her car was stopped close to the proximity where a murder took place. Nelly tries his luck with the woman at the hardware store once again. He apologizes for putting her on the spot before she admits she knows a man who matches the description. He doesn’t have a kid and she is glad about that since he was odd. She says he took over a key cutting place while Goz pleads with Nelly to return. Goz says that the police have visited his place before they have his car on CCTV. Nelly offers to drive Goz back and Goz allows hi, to do that.
Nelly tries to calm Goz down along the way. Goz wants to know what happened. Goz goes on and on while Nelly drives his vehicle. Nelly drives to a place where Jennifer is staying and her sister wants to call the police on him. He wants to know why Jennifer (Lesley Manville) was at Gideon’s place on the day he was killed. He remembers Jennifer driving past him on his way there and he wonders if she killed Gideon. He tells Jennifer that he is trying to help Grace. Meanwhile, Grace tells Zita why she decided to get drunk and party. Zita says she understands what Grace is going through and why she would do that. Grace gets angry and begins arguing with Zita but Zita doesn’t want an argument.
Grace wants to know why Zita would be with Nelly and why she would have him around her kid. She also believes that Zita will let Nelly go at some point. Grace gets sick and runs off to the bathroom to throw up. Zita follows with a cup of water moments later. During this time, Jennifer speaks with Nelly by the water. She says the coroner called and asked what she wanted to do with her husband’s body. She says that is bad enough but she has Nelly following her too. Jennifer says she thinks she might deserve better and she believes she should’ve killed him. She wishes she had. Nelly reveals that Grace was in the house at the same time as Jennifer and that Paul was there as well. Jennifer denies seeing Paul going in or coming out.
Nelly apologizes and says she deserves better before leaving and driving away with Goz. Grace has calmed down. She tells Zita about thinking about Gideon and wanting what he promised. Zita asks if Grace messed him up and she begins crying. Nelly makes it back a few seconds later and Zita confirms that Grace killed Gideon.
Save Me Review
I am not sure this season of Save Me has been as good as the first one. Nevertheless, this episode was a lot better than the previous one and the season hasn’t been bad. I am glad that we’ve moved past the flashbacks and time jumps. Those were making the show very difficult to follow and understand. Now, we’ve found out who killed Gideon. What is going to happen to Grace? Will she go down for murdering her abuser or will Nelly be able to help her escape justice?
Is anything going to happen with Jody this season? While the Grace storyline is interesting, I think the show should return to its roots and bring Jody back to the forefront. This episode was decent. It scores a 7 out of 10. You can find past recaps of Save Me on Reel Mockery.
