Reyka Series 2 Episode 8 Recap
The episode opens in a flashback with Angus Speelman (Iain Glen) introducing young Reyka Gama (Gabrielle De Gama) to Portia (Nokuthula Ledwaba). Young Tokkie (Nissi Bodibe) and 10-year-old Zoe (Sage Hlaodi) watch a news report about Speelman and Portia’s arrest after Reyka’s escape. When she says Reyka is pretty, he says not as pretty as her. She admits to being creeped out by Speelman. He says Speelman lost a child. She confesses to loving him. Ten-year-old Zwelethu (Kumkani Pilonti) enters with a dog that he called Scampy. Tokkie watches as they take Scampy outside to play. Later, Tokkie finds Zoe and Zwelethu kissing. She orders him to leave. He asks if Zwelethu is hurting her. They laugh at him. Tokkie leads Scampy away from the building. Later, Zoe finds Scampy deceased under her bed linen. Hiding, he hears someone screaming his name, Gabriel, and calling him a “sicko.” He muffles the screams with his bloody hands.
In the present at Lover’s Lane, Ayanda (Samkelo Ndlovu) holds a deceased Zwelethu’s (Pallance Dladla) hand. A female officer gives her his phone. Tokkie (Tsipa Lemogang) took his shoes. Utilizing Zwelethu’s fingerprint to access his phone, Ayanda finds a video of him and Zoe making out. Seeing what appears to be a skull floating in the water, Reyka Gama (Kim Engelbrecht) tells Ayanda to notify Search and Rescue.
Detective Nick Tanner (Gerald Steyn) tries to convince Brigadier Francke (Zane Meas) to shut down Maritime Inn’s human trafficking ring. Francke says he and Reyka are “hotheads” with no regard to consequences. He eventually approves his request but warns that he better not embarrass him.
Zoe’s body is wrapped in a tarp. Reyka urges Ayanda to let her finish processing the crime scene but she refuses to leave. They find a possible shoe print on Zoe’s chest. Later, Reyka visits the Sunshine Children’s Home to collect a photo of young Zwelethu, Zoe, and Tokkie. She calls Ayanda to tell her about the photo. Ayanda claims Zwelethu never mentioned Tokkie. Reyka approaches a sex worker in front of the Liquid Disco. The sex worker tells her that Ula (Taiwo Kazeem) is dead. Reyka asks if she has seen Bianca (Kira Wilkinson). After some persuasion, the sex worker says Bianca is seeing the captain of My Corona. Reyka gives her some cash before leaving.
Elsa (Anna-Mart Van Der Merwe) and Richard are having a drink when Reyka arrives home. Reyka scolds her for not responding to her text. Once alone, she says Speelman picked her out of the Sunday School class that she sent her to, so she could be with her boyfriends. Elsa refuses to believe it. Reyka tells her about the photo of the Sunday School class. She accuses her of putting her in harm’s way before claiming to have seen her and a man in bed together. Elsa says ever since she fell in love with Speelman, she has allowed him to manipulate her. Reyka denies the allegation. Elsa demands she stop Speelman. After Elsa leaves, Reyka calls to check on Thulisile “Thuli” Gama.” Thuli assures her that she is much better.
Speelman promises Master that once he is in the UK, he will never hear from him again. Master warns that he will track him down if he betrays him. Jodie (Tamara Skye) arrives at the dock looking for Bianca. Recognizing Speelman from the Sunshine Children’s Home, she tells him that her mum works the boats. Identifying her as Bianca, Speelman claims she went to pick up some supplies before the ship set sail. He urges her to join them and promises to keep her safe. When Master approaches, he wishes her good luck.
Maritime Inn – A member of the tactical team apprehends a suspect outside the inn. Reyka, Tanner, and several tactical officers make their way through the facility. Reyka escorts Lauren to the exit when a suspect fires several shots at them. While the suspect retrieves another gun, they hurriedly descend the steps. Several suspects are shot. A shootout ensues and ends with Reyka hitting the shooter in the leg. Lauren runs off. She threatens to shoot him again until Tanner intervenes. A short time later, the victims are outside the inn and the suspects are being loaded into police vehicles. Francke complements their effort. Reyka invites Tanner out.
A volunteer helping to feed the My Corona crew recognizes Speelman as the abductor. Recognizing the man’s promise ring, Speelman grabs his hand to see his webbed fingers. The volunteer identifies himself as Tokkie. Speelman tells her that the promise ring belongs to him and Tokkie is his boy. Tokkie denies having parents. Master urges him to return to the ship. Speelman asks Tokkie if he is Gabriel Gigaba born on February 11, 1990. As Master (Nicky Rebelo) escorts Speelman away, Tokkie flees the area.
The lady from the shoe shop recognizes the shoe print on Zoe’s (Trudy Van Rody) chest as that of the King’s brogue. Later, Reyka asks two sex workers if any of their clients ever got turned on by shoes. They point her to Nikki (Shane Smit). Reyka gives her some cash. Nikki tells her that she had a client who had a cupboard of shoes. She says he had webbed fingers and resided in Berea underneath the Sunrise Children’s Home. Reyka asks if he was Tokkie. Nikki says yes.
Reyka and Ayanda arrive at the Sunshine Children’s Home. Armed, Ayanda enters the flat where she finds the shoe cupboard. She is looking at the shoe sole when Tokkie approaches and tries to take her gun. During a struggle, the gun is accidentally fired. Tokkie hits her and grabs a gun out of the cupboard. He flees when he hears Reyka approach. She finds Ayanda on the floor. As Ayanda sets up, Reyka calls for backup and pursues Tokkie into the tunnels. Several people pass her on their way to the exit. Keeping his gun trained on her, Tokkie approaches from behind when she turns and sees him. Placing her firearm on the ground, she asks if he is Gabriel Gigaba. He lowers his gun. She identifies herself as Reyka and claims to be scared sometimes like him. She asks if he was abused as a child. Covering his ears with his hands, he screams, “Get out, Gabriel, you cockroach.” He claims to have tried to help her but she laughed at him. Tokkie recognizes her as the abducted girl before saying he met the man who abducted him from the hospital. He says Father Angus was outside the My Corona today. He threatens to shoot himself and then her until she starts sobbing.
Tokkie flees as Ayanda approaches with backup. Reyka tells her that Speelman is at the docks. Ayanda heads deeper into the tunnels. Reyka notifies Elsa who demands she not do it again. At My Corona, Jodie embraces Speelman and asks if Bianca knows she is coming. Reyka pulls up outside. Speelman leads Jodie below the ship. Master demands to know what he is doing. Speelman says she is staying aboard the ship and locks her inside a room. Jodie calls for help. Reyka boards the ship. Jodie finds Bianca’s body. A crewman points in the direction of where Jodie is being kept. Reyka finds her distraught over Bianca’s death. On the deck, Jodie attacks Speelman. Grabbing her, he denies killing her. Reyka orders him to release her. When he refuses, she tells him that Gabriel is a serial killer. He shoves Jodie overboard and tries to run but Reyka shoots him. She dives into the water and pulls Jodie to safety. Elsa can be seen racing toward the boat. On the deck, Speelman says, “Goodbye, my love.” Elsa finds Reyka. Tokkie shoots Speelman before placing the gun under his neck. Reyka and Jodie are with Elsa on the dock when a gunshot rings out. Francke arrives with backup. Elsa embraces Jodie and Reyka.
Reyka surfaces in the water as the episode ends.
Reyka Finale Review
Tokkie is volunteering to feed the crew of the My Corona ship when he encounters Speelman wearing a priest outfit. Speelman sees his promise ring on Tokkie’s hand. He identifies Tokkie as his boy.
A sex worker, Nicki identifies Tokkie as having a shoe fetish. She provides Reyka with his location, a flat under the Sunshine Children’s Home. Ayanda finds him but he flees. Reyka tracks him into the tunnels where he tells her that his mother abused him and about his encounter with Speelman on the docks. He threatens to shoot her until he sees her panic. Reyka notifies Elsa of Speelman’s location.
Jodie is looking for Bianca when she encounters Speelman. He lies to her about Bianca leaving on the My Corona. She is convinced that Bianca wants her to go. She returns later to join Bianca but finds her body instead. Reyka finds her locked in a room on the cargo ship. Speelman tries to prevent Jodie from leaving the ship. Reyka shoots him. He shoves Jodie overboard. Reyka rescues her. He tells her goodbye from the deck. Tokkie shoots Speelman and puts the gun under his neck. Elsa, Jodie, and Reyka are on the dock when a gunshot rings out.
The season dragged on while the finale was haphazardly rushed and far too easy. The writer(s) missed an opportunity to create a memorable finale. Scenes are plagued with social agendas.
It is plausible that Tokkie would kill himself but there was truly no reason for him to kill Speelman. He is a newborn when Portia and Speelman abduct him from the hospital nursery and the abduction comes to a quick end when he is abandoned at the Sunshine Children’s Home. He would have no recollection of it and his trauma stems from his mother’s abuse, not the abduction.
Thuli suffers alone while Elsa is preoccupied with Richard and Reyka, Speelman. Elsa seems more concerned about Jodie than her own granddaughter. Reyka is so caught up in her own self that she barely knows Thuli exists. The writer dismissed Thuli by omitting her from the episode.
Whether Speelman survives or dies will remain a mystery until the show is canceled or renewed. It may be time to consider putting Reyka’s story to rest. Another season could do more harm than good.

The series started off good enough and had promise ad a gritty thriller. But it descended into madness around episode 4 and after crossing the metaphorical event horizon never recovered.
– They shut down a human trafficking ring that operated out of a brick and mortar hotel for God knows how long. Seems to me that a simple police raid at any time in the past would have led to the discovery of women being held captive. And clearly such a raid was warranted long before.
-Spellman escapes a cushy posh prison for why? To escape to Scotland to see his mom? Doesn’t make sense. She would be like 90 years old anyway. And he just can’t help himself and just HAS to try to abduct several young girls along the way. Basically at every turn. And he kills a priest where he never killed on the show before just to steal a shirt? He could have just bo ked the priest on the head amd taken it.
– Already pointed out but the motives behind Tookie killing people doesn’t hold water. A) not that traumatic and b) where has he been all this time? 🤔
– Just so much dumbness around Reyka and her messed up interactions with just about everyone from her mom to the police chief and everyone in between. Note that she is supposed to be a criminal profiler where she is not mentally competent to hold such a position.
– Again already pointed out but the coincidences… Reyka and Angus, Angus and Tookie, Tookie and Zee. Zee and Ayanda
Ayanda back to Reyka. Bianca to Master, to Spellman, to Reyka, to Jodie and back to Bianca. All just like one big family. Yeah… the Manson family.
– The ship capitan got away after killing Bianca. It’s as if they don’t have a coast guard in South Africa.
– The Water Conference. Got to have all of this wrapped up before the Water Conference.
All that said I kind of enjoyed it and if a series 3 comes out I’ll watch.
lol! Don’t forget that Reyka suddenly asked Tanner out after shunning him forever. Guess she believes that’ll turn her life around. I’d like to think of it as a guilty pleasure so I’d watch a 3rd season. It is nowhere near perfect and can probably even be called bad. Maybe good bad. haha From what one would expect from the show, it’s probably right on target or a little better.
The writing is the biggest issue unfortunately and I doubt it’ll get any better. Just hope it doesn’t get worse although these shows usually do.
James,
I guess, with Tookie they wanted to show that he had sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies and maybe some developmental issues as well since childhood and the trauma exacerbated it. I guess, the main root of the trauma is rejection which is why he killed Spielman (because Spielman was the first to reject him and thus derailed his whole childhood/life). Writers probably wanted to show (in a slightly clunky way) that if Gabriel was loved, his abnormal tendencies might have been curbed… How on Earth did he know about his first ”father”, who knows, maybe they told him in the orphanage. Agree with your remarks yet I also still enjoyed the series despite its faults)))
Agreed and thanks for taking some time to sort that for me. I appreciate that 🙏
I sprung the $7.99 for a month of Britbox to watch this since it’s apparently not even popular enough to have torrents to stream. Good news is I’ve found a few other shows I haven’t seen yet that look good. I didn’t realize there was new Shetland, so I got to binge that and thought it was good. Now watching a show called Payback… also pretty good. There’s a few others that look interesting. So it wasn’t a total loss.
I am surprised it’s that expensive now. I remember it being like $4.99 or $5.99 at one point. If you hit me up, I may be able to help point you in the right direction on the DL lol.
I think it’s safe to say that Spielman is dead. Wasn’t he shown dead and motionless? I mean, Tookie certainly knows how to shoot… Another confirmation is the final scene of Reyka resurfacing from the water with serene face signifying her being free and at peace. Yeah, there were many coincidences (everything being connected and revolving around Reyka) , rushed finale, some things out-of-nowhere, some not explored at all… They didn’t have to make Gabriel Angus’ ”son”… In the end it was all solved too neatly, without actual police involvment (Tookie would have still met Angus and went on to kill both of them). But it’s still not bad overall, I enjoyed it despite all its faults that both you and other commenter have mentioned), I still sympathized with characters
It’s hard to say depending on where the series goes from here. There is a possibility they could pull a trick or two to bring him back for another season since this has been done many times before. Then again, they could always create another villain and move on from here. Anything is possible.
I’d look forward to it if it gets the green light for another series though. Pretty enjoyable despite it all.
