Show kind of makes me feel sad given the shear volume of broken people living broken lives… broken relationships and just general craptastic lives all around. There are some lost opportunities. I sincerely would like to see more of just how lives are lived in KwaZulu-Natal. I would have liked them to dig a bit more into showing is the culture or just the day to day for the average person. They kind of gloss over any opportunities to highlight the culture but I think it would make the show more interesting.

    • ReelMockery says:

That’s actually a good idea. I didn’t see it that way, but I totally do now. I do wish they’d tone down all the crime shows and do more character studies like that. People are genuinely interesting without being killers or the victims of killers. KwaZulu-Natal would be a good starting point.

  2. James Luther says:

They do it on New Zealand shows. They make a point to show all about Maori culture. And on several Australian shows with the modern day aboriginal cultures. They did with the last series of True Detective with the Alaskan native culture and on shows like Dark Winds with the whole Navajo thing. It’s that’s same level of engagement I was expecting. Lost opportunity I say. People are interesting, that is true.

    • ReelMockery says:

Yea that is true. The New Zealand shows do seem to do it more than others. It’s common to see the traditional dances, tattoos, and such. The 1980s Shogun did that pretty well too. Don’t know if you’ve seen it but it is very good. Much better than the original.

With that being said, I wish they would have more grounded shows like that. Just people being people in their regular settings with their local community members and such. There are plenty of trials and tribulations to keep things interesting without a dozen murders in every season. That Broken tv show with Sean Bean was pretty good about it. Just messed up people and a messed up priest navigating their messed up lives.

I think stuff like that is a bit too close to home to some people so they’d prefer to watch fantasies and unrealistic stuff though. Just what I’ve always thought.
