As the episode begins, Ross (Aidan Turner) speaks in the house. He writes letters to Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) and receives some in return. Drake (Harry Richardson) and Demelza speak with Rosina Hoblyn (Amelia Clarkson) momentarily. Verity Blamey (Ruby Bentall) visits George (Jack Farthing) and Elizabeth (Heida Reed). Verity and Elizabeth speak about George attempting to regain a seat. Dwight (Luke Norris) gives advice to Tholly (Sean Gilder). He doesn’t take it. Demelza visits the mine. Tholly seems to have found a female friend. Zacky (Tristan Sturrock) lets Demelza know that they’re having problems at the mine. It is starting to run low.
In London, Ross runs into Geoffrey Charles (Louis Davison). They catch up on old times. Ross is confronted by two men. They offer him pleasure, but he turns them down. Ross learns about the trouble at the mine. George visits Monk to meet with Monk Adderley (Max Bennett). Adderley gives him the idea of becoming a patron. Verity visits Demelza. She learns about Dwight and Caroline (Gabriella Wilde). Lady Whitworth (Rebecca Front) visits Morwenna (Ellise Chappell). She wants to take the education of Morwenna’s son into her own hands. Morwenna isn’t willing to let that happen. On the carriage ride home, Ossie (Christian Brassington) speaks with Ross.
He tries to strike a deal. Ross refuses and tells him to give his curate in charge, Reverend Odgers, a raise. Ossie isn’t willing to do that. Verity tells Demelza that she believes their relationship with Elizabeth and George will worsen due to Ross taking George’s seat. Verity is introduced to Rosina. Ross makes it home. He surprises everyone. Rowella Solway (Esme Coy) comes up with a plan. Morwenna argues with Ossie about the child’s education. Ossie receives a letter from Rowella and becomes excited. Caroline delivers a baby. She is given the name Sarah. Rowella tells Ossie that she wants more money. He seems willing to cooperate as long as he gets her feet. Elizabeth and Verity contemplate how their life would have been different if there was no interference from others.
That night, Ross and Demelza speak about Hugh and their relationship. In the morning, Ross goes for a swim. He runs into Dwight and learns about the baby. They head to the mine together. Ross tells Sam (Tom York), Zacky and Paul (Ed Browning) about his plan to save the money. They do not like the idea and suggest he doesn’t know the mine well enough since he has been away in London. Harris Pascoe (Richard Hope) speaks with Nathaniel Pearce (Mike Burnside). The man tells Ossie that he was unable to resist his temptations. He invested some money belonging to others and lost it. George tells Cary (Pip Torrens) that he has decided to buy a borough. Cary isn’t sure he’ll be able to find someone willing to sell.
Pascoe tells Ross about his conversation with Nat Pearce. Ossie speaks with George and Cary. He tells them about Pearce losing his money. He explains that the money is kept in Pascoe’s bank. George begins scheming right away. He believes that he can use Pearce’s troubles as a way to hurt Pascoe and Ross. He taunts Ross outside. When he leaves, Ross buys some earrings. George tells Elizabeth about his new plan to buy a borough. Later that night, Demelza tries to hook Drake up with Rosina. Sam steps in to make the walk home a little less awkward for Drake. The following day, Sam tries to convince Drake to give up on Morwenna. When Drake refuses, Sam admits he promises Demelza that he would try.
Ross pitches his plan to the miners again. He is going to stay and work during the recess. They agree with him this time. Geoffrey returns home and greets Elizabeth. Meanwhile, the staff begins preparing for the upcoming party. Dwight checks on Caroline and the baby. He notices something awkward with the toddler. Lady Whitworth tries to take Morwenna’s child. She refuses to let him go. Adderley arrives for the party. He is introduced to Elizabeth. George tells her about Christopher Hawkins (Cornelius Booth). He believes he could be their best chance of buying a borough. Ross decides to join the party on the beach, while Verity hangs out with Geoffrey. Dwight seems distracted by the baby.
Ross finds Sam, Drake, Zacky and Tholly fighting with another group. Tholly’s woman wasn’t a widow at all. Ross and the others manage to scare off their attackers. Tholly gives them a fright, but he is fine. They head to the bar for a drink. After that, Ross decides to visit Francis’s old house. He runs into Elizabeth. He learns that George’s suspicions have dissipated. Adderley interrupts. He seems a little too flirty with Elizabeth. Back inside, Elizabeth learns that George may be able to buy a borough with 2 MPs. That would make him very powerful. Dwight continues monitoring the baby’s health. Ross returns home and tells Demelza about his encounter with Elizabeth. They agree that they have to stop worrying about the shadows of Elizabeth and Hugh.
Ross gives Demelza the earrings. He admits that they’re still strangers. However, they know every inch of their bodies. They get romantic as the episode comes to an end.
Poldark Review
This was another great episode of Poldark, despite being a little disappointing. Why? Well, we got plenty of storylines that were left hanging. What is wrong with Dwight and Caroline’s baby? There is a good chance that something bad is right around the corner. It was a little awkward to see George return to Trenwith too. I am not really sure what the point of that was unless the writers wanted us to see that Ross is truly over Elizabeth.
Did Hawkins agree to sell his borough? What will come of the mine and Pascoe’s bank? The episode was good, but now I feel eager to binge the next one. This episode scores an 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Poldark now!
