Episode 5 begins amidst a torrential downpour with Penelope (Megan Stott) reflecting on her time with Helena (Krisha Fairchild). As the rain immobilizes Penelope, her brief memories of Helena will mix with several childhood ones. She will eventually reach a breaking out and let an outcry of emotions, cursing the rain until she falls asleep. With the deluge over the following morning, she immediately sets out on a hike to a nearby swampy-looking water lake that apparently doesn’t satisfy her. It is only a few childhood memories and a short hike later that she arrives at a much more favorable lake. She wastes little time taking advantage of everything it has to offer.

After a very brief respite at the lake, Penelope, with the assistance of a field guide, begins erecting what turns out to be a permanent structure. She not only does a commendable job but working up until the arrival of the evening, she gets quite a bit accomplished. The following morning, she catches a fish for breakfast and resumes her task. Before long she has the basic skeleton of what appears to be a small cabin. She even finishes the cabin with enough light left in the day to fashion, set, and bait several hooks for fish traps.

Once the traps are set and she begins preparing her dinner of oats, it will be revealed that she’s chosen to bury and camouflage her food reserves rather than suspend them. As time passes, she works on sealing the cabin and enjoying the fruits of her hard labor. By the end of the episode, she has an operational camp, replete with food reserves and other necessities.

 

Penelope Review

Despite the very little that happened, this was an enjoyable episode for me. I’m sure not everyone will agree but the combination of the solitude, the survival skills, and ethereal music makes for an excellent watch. I’d give the episode a 5.6 out of 10.
