Pam & Tommy

Pam & Tommy Episode 1 Recap

Drilling and Pounding – The show begins with an episode of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” playing on the TV. Jay Leno (Adam Ray) is interviewing Pamela Anderson (Lily James) about a tape. Pamela claims to know nothing about the tape.

The show jumps back one year. Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) and Pamela can be heard having sex in the background. Rand Gauthier (Seth Rogan) briefly stops working to look up at the ceiling. He staples a couple of nails in a wooden platform before giving the ceiling another look. A few more nails, Tommy and Pamela have an orgasm while Rand ends up with an injured hand. Rubbing his hand, Rand walks outside to his work van, where he finds a tube of Ben Gay. He places a dab on the top of his hand, slowly massaging it into the skin.

July 1995, Pamela and Tommy are at it again, with Rand trying to ignore them while working. He is shocked to hear the noise has stopped. In walks Tommy in his underwear, with his dog at his side. He says, “What’s up, broskies, how’s it going.” Rand turns to look at him, saying good. Tommy takes a look around, calling their work “rad.” Pointing to a chain hanging from the ceiling, he asks if it is strong enough. Lonnie (Larry Brown) says it will hold 1,000 pounds. Tommy jerks on the chain, pulling himself up. He rushes over to the bed platform Rand was previously working on before laying down. Rand has a smirk on his face. Tommy suggests switching up the blueprints to accommodate another location for the bed, a better view of the shower, and a retractable mirror, with a 360-degree view. A tongue-tied Lonnie leaves it up to the carpenter, Rand.

Rand can only get out, “Uh.” Tommy asks if he has a problem. He admits the platform was just finished. Tommy shrugs it off, suggesting he just pull out a few nails. Rand disagrees, saying it would take more than that to move the platform. Tommy walks over the platform, giving it a jerk, it doesn’t budge. Rand believes it can be done. Tommy questions why he is hesitating. Lonnie explains it will cost him if they move it. Tommy doesn’t care how much it will cost because he just sold 50 million copies of his album. He questions if they think he can’t afford to pay them to have the platform moved. Rand lets Lonnie do the talking. Tommy reminds them about what he said before the job started. Lonnie says, “Money is no object.” Tommy claps his hands together, with the index fingers pointing directly at Lonnie, “Correctamundo.”

He approaches Rand to ask if there is any reason why he can’t move the bed platform, so he can have what he wants. Rand says nope. He says fu**ing do it.

Pam & Tommy

Rand calls Tommy a dick, saying they agreed on the bed location in advance. Lonnie agrees because he was there during the conversation. Rand believes Tommy is blaming it on him. He wants him to own up to it. Tommy did the same thing with the light switches, which he initially agreed to install high, deciding later to lower them. Rand calls it bullshit before asking Lonnie what is happening here. Lonnie believes it is just rock stars. Tommy owes Rand over $8k, adding an additional $1k to move the bed. He owes Lonnie nearly $15k. Rand questions Lonnie about Tommy promising to pay them upfront. He eventually agrees to move the bed for the full payment at 18 percent interest. Tommy and Pamela drive by without acknowledging them. Lonnie repeats what he said earlier, “Fu**ing rock stars.”

Rand sings “Heave Is A Place On Earth” as he drives home. He arrives home to discover his TV service has been disconnected. He asks a representative if they were supposed to send him a final warning. She informs him that the past due notice is his warning. He disagrees because it should say if you don’t pay this amount by a certain date, the service will be disconnected. She reminds him the bill is three months past due. He accepts the explanation, but later punches a hole in the wall, which causes him great pain. He sits on the sofa in front of the TV with a bag of frozen vegetables taped to his hand. A “Religions of the World” poster hangs on the wall.  He masturbates with his injured hand while watching a porn movie.

Rand pulls a nail out of the wooden platform, causing damage. When he discovers his caulk gun is empty, he goes to a paint store to buy more. He takes three tubes of caulk to the counter. When the paint store clerk (Lawrence H. Sullivan) gives him a total of $8.62, he realizes he doesn’t have enough money. He purchases two tubes of caulk instead.

As he returns back to work, Tommy asks him how the job is going. He says good. Tommy wants him to tell his friends, Zakk (Sam Meader) and Ace (Zack Gold) about the love shack. He says it is cool. Tommy says it is much better than cool, it is a futuristic love pad 2000. Rand is confused with Tommy tells the guys about the waterbed. He tries to ask him to confirm the waterbed but doesn’t quite get that far.

Pam & Tommy

Rand tells Lonnie about the waterbed. Lonnie questions if Tommy really said waterbed. Rand confirms what he heard Tommy say. Lonnie suggests he said it figuratively. To install a waterbed in the place of the traditional bed, he would need to put in an elevated deck and heater. Lonnie places the responsibility of explaining the money issue to Rand because it is a construction problem. He disagrees, saying it is a budget issue. They will flip for it. Rand chooses tails while Lonnie takes heads. Lonnie flips the coin, which lands heads up.

Rand goes on a search for Tommy, finding him in the garage with Ace and Zakk. When the band stops playing, Rand informs him about the cost of waterbeds. Tommy stares at him, taking in a few deep breaths.

Pam & Tommy

Rand relays Tommy’s message to Lonnie in the form of a note. The front of the note reads “MINO,” meaning money is no option. Tommy refuses to negotiate the waterbed. Lonnie agrees but only if he pays upfront. Rand totally agrees. Lonnie tells him to inform Tommy of the agreement.

Rand returns to the garage, where he finds Tommy holding a Colt Commander 1911 pistol. Rand clears his throat to get his attention before explaining he must pay upfront. Tommy questions if they believe he will not pay them. Rand denies the allegations. Tommy mockingly says, “Like I can’t afford a waterbed.” Rand’s eyes are like saucers, staring at Tommy holding the pistol. Tommy yells ugh, jumping out at Rand. He immediately defends his actions, referring to as “funning.” He pops open the chamber to show it is empty, agreeing to pay upfront. Agitated, Rand hurriedly rushes away from the garage.

Pam & Tommy

When they set the waterbed box down, Rand refuses to open it until Tommy pays. Lonnie agrees to talk to him, but Rand refuses. He sets out to find Tommy. As he enters the kitchen, he finds Pamela on all fours, wearing a thong. He immediately apologizes, claiming to have mistaken her Tommy. Refusing to believe him, she screams for Tommy. He rushes back to where they are working to gather up his tools. Lonnie questions him about what is going on. Tommy gets in Rand’s face, accusing him of coming on to Pamela. Rand frantically tries to explain himself, saying he was looking for him. He asks what you wanted with me. Rand spits out for the money, refusing to continue working before reimbursement.

Smirking Tommy says hmm as he appears to be walking away. He points at the wall, turns around, and holds his arms out to his side. He tells them to look at their shoddy work. Lonnie tries to explain that the tiles are not sealed. He descrithe wood they utilized as cheap-looking. Lonnie disagrees, saying it is one of the most expensive woods on the market. He accuses them of cheating him by trying to charge him overages. They remind him of the money he owes them, denying they are overages, but charges for the work they have done. Tommy throws up his hands and shrugs his shoulders, refusing to pay them. Rand asks what he is talking about. He says you are fired.

In a restaurant, Rand suggests they file a lawsuit against Tommy. Lonnie believes the legal fees would add up to be more than what he owes them. He says Tommy may do like OJ, hire a dream team. Rand says, “You are going to let him bed you over and fu** you in the ass.” He tells him to pass the lube. Rand goes off on a tangent about religion and karma. Lonnie is confused, asking why he studies religion. He describes it as “beautiful.” Lonnie hopes the rock star gets kicked square in the ass by the universe. Rand is confident it will happen.

At home, Rand is masturbating to porn when he spots a red toolbox on the screen. He activates the security system to gain access into the home, so he can get his toolbox. He persuades Kenzo into opening the gate. Kenzo lets him in the house. When no one responds to his hello, he rushes to gather his toolbox. As he prepares to leave, Tommy loads his gun and orders him to stop. Rand tries to explain that he just came for his toolbox. Tommy takes full ownership of the tools as collateral. Rand reminds him that he fired them. He places the barrel of the gun on Rand’s cheek, ordering him to put the toolbox down. Rand rushes out of the house to his van to discover he urinated himself.

Young Rand (Jackson Demott Hill) is playing with a train as his parents argue. His dad, Dick Gauthier (Karl Girolamo) gets fed up, rushing in to pick him up. They get in a car and leave. He sits in the backseat, not saying a word. Dick pulls into the driveway, escorting Rand inside the house. He gives him a soda and snacks before ordering him to stay in the room no matter what. As he walks through the house, he spots his father dancing with two women. A woman is startled when he opens the restroom door. Dick rushes in to take him back to the living room. He watches his father leave while urinating on himself.

Lonnie receives a phone call from Rand who informs him they are going to take Tommy down. Lonnie reminds him of karma. He says, “I am karma and I’m a bitch.” Rand pants his work van blue. He is parked in front of Tommy’s house when he pulls out of the driveway. He documents the time. He leaves his apartment to return to Tommy’s house, where he is entertaining guests. He returns home to work on his Operation Karma strategy.

In October 1995, Rand meets Lonnie to give him his Operation Karma log. Lonnie opens the log to have Rand point out when the paparazzi arrived, the new work crew arrived and left, and Tommy and Pamela. Lonnie appears stunned by all the work he put into creating the log. Rand explains how they will enter the house, with one issue, which is a security camera. Lonnie suggests he disable it. To avoid getting the cops called, they need to get in without them knowing it.

Pam & Tommy

They pick up white fur coats to avoid detection during the home invasion. Lonnie reminds him that home invasion is a crime. Rand accuses him of getting cold feet. He explains they are just trying to recoup their money in a different way. Lonnie asks what if the stuff they get is valued higher than what Tommy owes them. He calls it compensatory damage for their pain and suffering.

Lonnie receives a call while studying compensatory damage. Rand alerts him that they will invade Tommy’s house tomorrow at 0300 hours. He considers backing out of the plan. Lonnie is irate, jerking the phone out of the wall.

Rand’s work van is parked in front of Tommy’s house. After exiting the van, he grabs his gear out of the back. He successfully lands on Tommy’s lawn, wearing the white fur. Crawling on his knees, Rand heads to a security camera before disabling it. Rand can be seen on the surveillance system, but the security guard fails to catch it. Rand props open the garage door. He is inside the home. At the top of the staircase, he encounters Tommy’s dog, which does not make a move. Tommy and Pamela are asleep on the bed. Rand shoots them the bird. He returns to the garage, with a large safe on a dolly. He opens the garage door and pushes the safe through. He struggles to maintain control of the safe. When the security lights come on, he starts to freak out. He tries to get the safe in the back of the van when car lights approach.

After waking up, Tommy tells Pamela good morning. He walks into the work area, asking one of the workers how is it going. He inspects a sex swing hanging from the ceiling before heading to the garage. He picks a drum stick off the floor, laying it on top of a drum. He doesn’t notice the missing safe.

Rand cuts open the safe to find money, jewelry, and guns. He plays with the guns before selling them to a pawn shop. He writes out several checks. While watching TV, he discovers a tape. He calls Uncle Miltie utilizing the alias Austin.

Rand is on the set of a porn video. Uncle Miltie (Nick Offerman) is directing the film. He explains how more people are watching VHS movies at home than in theaters. He is contemplating establishing a chain of video stores called Cockbuster. Rand picks up a porn tape, asking if he remembers it. Uncle Miltie plays Tommy’s tape. Pamela and Tommy are on the video. He asks Rand where the tape came from. Tommy and Pamela are having sex as the episode come to an end.

Pam & Tommy Review

Lily James may be ideal for the role of Pamela Anderson, but we won’t find out this episode. Her air time was limited to a few short skits. Hopefully, she gets more air time in the future episodes.

The show portrays Tommy Lee as a reckless, self-absorbed moron. Sebastian Stan does a great job filling Tommy’s shoes on-screen.

The legitimacy of the plot is questionable. How is it possible that Rand was able to bypass not only an extensive surveillance system but also a security guard? He opens the garage door with two car jacks, enters the room where Pamela and Tommy are asleep, loads an extremely heavy safe onto a dolly, fully opens the garage door, and loads the heavy safe into the back of his van without activating the security system. The story doesn’t seem credible.

I have nothing to add about Seth Rogan. His acting is always the same, regardless of the role. The only difference in this role is his hairstyle.

The episode deserves a 7. Get more Pam & Tommy recaps here. Support ReelMockery by clicking the link.
