Outlander Season 7 Episode 2 Recap

The Happiest Place On Earth – As the episode opens, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) explains what she learned from Tom Christie. She discovers Allan Christie (Alexander Vahos) at the gravesites of his sister, Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds), and father, Tom Christie. Sitting her basket down, she notices a pistol by his side. He professes to have loved his sister deeply from birth. He tells her that his father was locked away in prison. He claims his mother was executed while he and Malva were present. He says when his Aunt Darla took them in, they hardly ate. Weepy, he blames himself for Malva’s care. Irate, he claims her as his own. In a flashback, he is having sex with Malva while she is detached and motionless.

Claire accuses him of murdering Malva. He admits to beating her after she slept with young Ian (John Bell) and Henderson. She later told him it was necessary because she was pregnant. Claire asks if he was the father. Nodding in confirmation, he says Malva stressed the importance of her soon-to-be husband believing it was his child. She asks if it was his idea for Malva to say Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) was the father. He assures her it would keep her from needing to marry and Jamie would pay her to leave, they would leave together. Claire asks what prompted him to murder Malva. He claims she refused to do it because she loved her. In a flashback, he urges Malva to implement their plan but she refuses. He professes to love her. She denies loving him when he slashes her throat.

Back to the present, Allan puts the muzzle of his pistol to his head. Claire intervenes to stop him from committing suicide. She orders him to leave when Ian shoots him in the back. He tells Claire that he was under the impression Malva’s baby belonged to him. He says even though Allan was the father, the baby deserved to live. Claire and Ian dig Allan’s grave when a woman approaches from behind. She says it was obvious Allan was controlled by the devil. She suggests he deserved to die before urging them to get the grave dug before someone else comes along.

Brianna McKenzie/Brianna Randall Fraser (Sophie Skelton) gives birth to a healthy baby girl. Roger McKenzie (Richard Rankin) suggests naming the newborn “Amanda Claire” because she is loved. Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) introduces newborn Amanda to her Leannan foal. He promises to teach her how to ride. She promises to teach Amanda about medicine so she can be a surgeon someday like her. Noticing her blue nail beds, she auscultates her heart. She curses as Brianna enters the room. Brianna demands to know what is wrong with Amanda. Claire diagnoses the newborn with “patent ductus arteriosus,” a condition characterized by the ductus arteriosus remaining open at birth. Brianna tells them that Amanda nurses differently than Jemmy Mackenzie (Andrew Adair/Matthew Adair). She asks if Amanda will die. Claire says most likely but a physician may be able to help her.

Roger voices concern about traveling with Amanda. Brianna offers to go while he remains there to care for Jemmy. She reminds him of his return to Edenton to study. He tells her that God can wait until they all are ready to go. She says the surgeons in Ocracoke can treat Amanda but Virginia is too far. She promises to do whatever is necessary to save Amanda.

Claire regrets she cannot perform heart surgery on Amanda. She and Jamie pray to St. Eligius. He places a gemstone in front of Amanda. Brianna says there is no way to know if she likes it. After claiming to hear the gemstone sing, Jemmy says Amanda told him that she hears it as well.

Priestly & Son, Wilmington  – Brianna emerges to see Lord John Grey (David Berry) and his son, Lieutenant Lord Ellesmere/William Ramson (Charles Vandervaart). Grey and James acknowledge each other with a nod. When William walks away, she asks if he will ever tell him about his true parentage. He asks if she could imagine how such news would impact William. She professes to have loved her “other father,” Frank. She admits to having struggled to process Jamie being her father until she met him. She assures him that Frank will remain in her memory.

Grey tells Jamie that he sent a letter to inform him of William’s Army enlistment. He says William’s determination to fight is like his. He wishes they could become acquainted. Jamie assures him it is enough to see Brianna and him together. Grey says Brianna urges him to tell William about his biological father. Jamie agrees they should keep him in the dark. He explains his oath to never fight for Britain. Grey asks if he truly believes an Army fighting against the Crown will win. Jamie suggests severing their friendship. Grey curses the war. Jamie promises to continue to be his humblest friend. Removing a gemstone from his vest pocket, Grey says it was 20 years ago but he kept it with him. He gifts it to Brianna.

Roger reveals a collection of gems from Wilmington. Jamie gives Brianna Grey’s gemstone. During a walk, Jamie and Brianna discuss her brother, William. He catches and releases a firefly. She describes her visits to Disneyland. He asks if she finds this place “disappointing.” She admits to finding him “magical.” He questions if it is worth go to America. She assures him it doesn’t compare to losing him.

Claire and Jamie discuss their dreams. Pulling a small bag out of a drawer, he pours a small gem into her palm. He suggests utilizing it to go back now or if when he gets killed. She drops it out the window before professing her love for him.

Claire says her goodbyes to Claire and Jemmy. Jamie encourages Roger to be whatever he wants to be. He admits to being proud of him and trusts Brianna with no one use. Roger promises to instill their memories in his children. Brianna assures him that he will always be in her heart. Claire and Jamie watch as they enter a portal. Brianna, Amanda, Roger, and Jemmy arrive safely.

Unable to sleep, Claire tells Jamie that their children are gone. He reminds her of their still being alive. She voices concern about never seeing them again. He comforts her as she grieves their losses.

Claire returns home to find Wendigo Donner (Brennan Martin) there. Striking a match, he demands to know where it came from. She tells him that Brianna made them. He asks for her help. She asks where he was when she needed help. He claims Brown threatened to kill him if he helped her. She says Roger told her everything. He calls Roger a foul name for refusing to assist him in escaping. Claiming his effort to go back failed, he asks her to show he how it works. She says it isn’t fully clear but he needs to “steer,” think of a place or person. Holding her at gunpoint, he demands some gemstones for him and his friends. A man shoves Jamie into the room. Jamie pretends to curse Claire for hiding the gemstones from him while he was with the militia.

Thug (Jack Simpson) tosses several bags of gold on the table. Murdina Bug (Sarah Collier) demands they return their gold. While searching for the gemstones, the men bust a beaker of ether on the floor. Thug complains that it is too dark. When Wendigo strikes a match, the house explodes as the episode ends.

Outlander Review

A bit bleak and gloomy but a great episode. The cinematography is superior compared to many of the latest big-budget series. The acting is believable. Matthew Adair and Andrew Adair display their amateurish acting skills. With a few more roles, they should be well on their way to being top talent.

The pace is sometimes unbearably. All in all, a series worth a watch. The episode deserves a 6.8. Get more Outlander recaps here. Support Reel Mockery by donating to our platform. Learn more about our onsite advertising by clicking the link.
