The End Of Innocence – The episode opens in a flashback at a time when the Abbott family was together and happy. En route to Fourwing, Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) recalls he and Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) traveling in the same direction on their honeymoon. He claims to be glad they are together. She questions how many people have traveled through the black hole. She says hopefully Amy Abbott (Olive Abercrombie) will forgive her. After a bit of reassurance, he asks if she forgives him. Cecilia says she already did.

In a voicemail, Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) warns Luke Tillerson (Shaun Sipos) that his soul will melt his poisonous heart for killing Billy Tillerson (Noah Reid). He weeps over Billy’s lifeless body. Utilizing a torch, he sets his owl taxidermy collection on fire. He removes his jacket and sits on the floor facing the fire.

Standing near the black hole, young Royal Abbott (Christian James) tells Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) about a firstborn son who tries to shoe a wild horse in an attempt to convince his father to make him the heir of the family farm. The boy suffered a debilitating injury. After a stern warning, Royal shoves Perry into the black hole.

Luke has a flashback of fighting with Billy. He tells Autumn Rivers (Imogen Poots) that he wants the West Pasture and claims to have seen them together in his visions. She reminds him that the West Pasture belonged to Wayne. He says Wayne made Billy the sole heir of his estate. Tears streaming down his face, he admits to hurting Billy. She tries to reassure him by saying nothing is final, not even death.

Wayne is inside the burning house when he hears “it” call him. Perry returns to the Abbott farm. Looking in a window, he sees Cecilia watching TV and Amy asleep beside her. He jumps in a truck and drives to a parking where he and Trevor Tillerson (Matt Lauria) are fighting. He stops the fight but not before Trevor kills him and flees. He picks up the lifeless body. A short time later, Rhett Abbott (Lewis Pullman) arrives to nothing but a puddle of blood on the sidewalk and Trevor’s belt buckle.

Martha Hawk (Morningstar Angeline) and Rose Hawk (Ofelia Garcia) find Deputy Sheriff Joy (Tamara Podemski) asleep on the front lawn. A bear, a hawk, a wolf, and a bison stare at them.

Echoes – Autumn tells Kelsey (Alaska Jackson) and Persia (Susan Louise O’Connor) that she is Rebecca’s sister. She continues to feed them information until they let her and Luke in to see Amy and Rebecca. Amy expresses her desire to go home. Rebecca refuses to let Autumn take Amy back to the Abbotts. Autumn claims to know about her dreams because she is Amy. As Rebecca starts to walk away, Autumn recalls how she broke her promise to take them to the movies and accuses her of taking them out of spite. When Autumn threatens to tell Amy everything, Rebecca agrees to let her go. Autumn says Cecilia did the right by running her off and smears minerals on her face. Several women from the shelter yell for them to stop but Luke keeps driving.

Standing near the black hole, Wayne asks for a sign. He believes the hole is beckoning him and jumps in.

Echoes – Royal and Cecilia arrive at the women’s shelter to learn Amy is with Autumn. Rebecca says, “She is a gift for time.” Back on the road, Cecilia calls Autumn. Royal threatens to destroy her if she puts Amy in the hole. Autumn abruptly ends the call. He calls Joy and asks her to go to the West Pasture alone and stop Autumn from putting Amy in the black hole. Parked across the street from Shelton Cape Reality, Joy sees the owner talking to a couple.

Dr. Nia Bintu (Yrsa Daley-Ward) gives Rhett a bullet that Royal left her. He says she is lucky it was only a warning and agrees to talk to Royal but only if she pays him. He demands $30k to start and more if he can convince Royal to work with her. When she scoffs at his offer, he assures her that she will never win against Royal. She accepts his offer. Upon walking away, he demands protection for the Abbott farm. Elsewhere, Maria Olivares (Isabel Arraiza) steals money from the bank.

Perry removes a deceased Perry’s shirt and takes his wedding band before pushing him into the black hole. He tosses his shirt in afterward.

Joy is waiting for Luke and Autumn with a rifle. When Luke refuses to stop, she shoots out his tire. He veers to the left and brings the truck to a stop. Emerging from the truck, he suggests she cares more about the Abbotts when she hits him with the butt on her rifle. She threatens to arrest Autumn for kidnapping and endangerment. Grabbing a gun, Autumn emerges from the truck and opens the door for Amy. Placing her rifle on the ground, Joy tries to coax her into putting the gun down. Upon approaching the black hole, Royal begins to exhibit symptoms. Amy pushes Autumn away. Joy shoots Autumn. She falls to the ground. Amy loses her balance and falls into the hole. Cecilia grabs the steering wheel. The hole closes up. The truck rams into a fence.

Autumn is being treated for a gunshot wound at the emergency room. An unconscious Royal is brought into the emergency room. Joy tells Cecilia what happened. Cecilia assures her that she did her best. Pastor Ken (Johnny Sneed) asks her to join them in a word of prayer. The trauma surgeon (Marisilda Garcia) pronounces Autumn deceased at 4:43pm. Amy wakes up and so does Autumn. Two hikers (Amy Puente, Jamie H. Jung) find Amy. Amy believes she is Autumn.

Perry tells Rhett about his fight with Trevor. Amy emerges from the house and asks him to tell her a bedtime story.

In a dream, Royal sees a young version of himself with his family. Cecilia says, “Time is a river, Royal. This is your destiny.” They repeat it in unison. He wakes up in the hospital and gets dressed. Joy tells him she shot Autumn. He asks her to help stop Autumn’s future from happening. She says it is impossible to stop the future. He recalls Autumn telling him that it is just the beginning as the episode ends.

 

Outer Range Review

A disastrous finale, ending on a cliffhanger. As lives and times intertwine, the story becomes erratic, disjointed, incoherent, and unbelievable. Six episodes of virtually no story progression only to get a bloated finale. Viewer satisfaction is put on the back burner to drive home a half-hearted attempt to score a season three.

A complete failure to say the least. If I am being honest, I didn’t feel the show deserved to be renewed after the first season. This season reminds me of why I felt that way. It deserves a 4.2 out of 10.
