Outer Range Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

Outer Range

The Unknown – The show begins with Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) playing an arcade game at a skating rink. Young Rhett alerts him of young Perry (Jackson Dean Vincent) being in a fight. A woman complains that Perry knocked out Trevor. Royal questions Perry’s whereabouts. He finds him at the edge of the parking lot, looking out at the vacant land.

On the ride home, Royal asks Perry why he hit Trevor. He denies knowing why. Royal says he doesn’t believe it just hit him out of the blue. He begins to tell him a story about when he was a young lad but changes his mind. Perry stares up at a sign that reads, “America tells you that the only things worth knowing are those which can be known, America is wrong.”

Adult Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) is in the back of a police cruiser when he passes the same sign.

Deputy Sheriff Joy (Tamara Podemski) questions Perry. She asks if someone assisted him in toting Trevor Tillerson’s (Matt Lauria) body up the mountain. She asks if his family was aware of what he did. He says, “No.” She questions if he has any idea of his wife, Rebecca’s whereabouts. Denying any knowledge of Rebecca, he suggests Rebecca isn’t gone. Joy asks him to clarify. He says it is possible that nothing is gone.

A buffalo walks through the Abbott Farm entrance, toward the family home. Amy Abbott (Olivia Abercrombie) joins Royal and Perry in the kitchen.

Autumn (Imogen Poots) smokes a cigarette in front of her hotel room.

Royal and Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) attend court. Perry’s attorney informs them that the judge set the bail at $500K. The County Clerk (Yvonne Otero) reads the bail terms. Joy escorts Perry out of jail, where they are waiting for him.

When Perry knocks on Amy’s bedroom door, she runs into his arms. She asks if he had been drinking on the night it happened. He assures her that he wasn’t so drunk that he didn’t know better. He informs her that Trevor made a nasty comment about mom. She questions if he is aware of what happened to her mother. He swears to her that he doesn’t.

Royal enters the barn, where Perry is working. He apologizes for his actions last night. Perry assures him that he is strong enough to handle whatever happens. He asks him if he has any information on Rebecca. Royal swears he knows nothing. Looking him in the eye, Perry tells Royal he doesn’t believe he is telling the truth.

Royal speaks with Billy Tillerson (Noah Reid) and Luke Tillerson (Shaun Sipos). Luke tells Joy that he refuses to believe Perry could’ve transported Trevor up the mountain without help from his family. Joy denies believing Perry’s statement. He asks her about the four days that have been unaccounted for. He suggests Trevor was alive for four days before his body was found. Billy says Trevor he believes Trevor spent four days in an “uncreated part of the world.” Luke apologizes for Billy’s insanity. Joy questions Billy about what he means by “uncreated part of the world.”

Billy tells Joy about something his father, Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) told him about seeing something that was impossible. He says Wayne describes the experience as “terrifying.” He tells her that it was a hole. When Joy leaves, Luke tells Billy that he hasn’t a care in the world why their dad is like that. Billy suggests he see something.

Billy and Luke drive across the Abbott’s west pasture to the hole. After getting off their four-wheelers, they approach the large black hole. They both squat a short distance away from the hole. When Luke looks at Billy, his appearance is strange.

Autumn screams after ending her conversation with her mother. Irate, she walks out in front of a vehicle. She enters the bar, where she finds Rhett Abbott (Lewis Pullman) having a drink. He informs her of Perry’s arrest for murdering Trevor. She tells him that Perry is innocent. He tells her that he got bail. She appears to light turn a bright red while assuring him that Perry will be all right.

Joy, Martha Hawk (Morningstar Angeline), and Rose Hawk (Ofelia Garcia) are at a restaurant. Frank (Barry Del Sherman) congratulates Joy for solving Trevor’s murder. She assures him it was a team effort. He informs her that something funny is happening up his way. He suggests she investigate it before telling Rose that her mum is going to be the next sheriff. Martha says she agrees with Frank that all the white locals are going to elect an Indian sheriff. She promises Frank to look into it.

Cecilia briefly looks around a shed when she notices a large black bear over to her right. She rushes to her vehicle, with the bear in tow. She grabs her gun and shoots the bear twice. She rolls over just in time for the bear to hit the ground. She is lying on the ground, with a bear in agony at her side. After struggling to get to its feet, the bear takes a few steps before collapsing. She shoots the bear to put it out of its misery.

Autumn stands out on the hotel balcony, looking at Billy down below. He informs her that Royal and Cecilia put their property up for Perry’s bail. He assures her the Abbott Ranch will belong to her. He tells her that he crushed Wayne’s magic rocks. He admits after he ate some of the dust, he envisioned himself beside her. He claims it felt as if they were the leader of Mother Earth. She asks if he saw Royal in his vision. She suggests he help her stop Royal before he stops her. She pleads with him to find Royal. When he agrees to be hers, they seal it with a kiss. She carves the same symbol on his chest like hers.

Royal drives down the road when his engine overheats. He pulls over near the “America is Wrong” sign. Billy pulls up next to him to see if he would like a ride home. Royal initially refuses his offer but eventually relents. Billy asks about his faith. He denies knowing God. Billy asks him about the hole. Royal questions how he discovered it. He admits to feeling its presence before she showed it to him. He pulls a gun on Royal.

Billy holds Royal at gunpoint. He orders him to get on his knees. When Royal tries to speak, he shoots into the ceiling. Royal squats on his knees. Billy accuses Royal of pushing Trevor into the black hole. Royal denies killing Trevor. Billy says this is about Trevor, it is about Autumn. He forces Royal to admit he tried to murder Autumn. He orders him to apologize. Royal tries to explain that Autumn is not what she seems, but Billy isn’t having it. Placing the muzzle of his gun against the back of Royal’s head, Billy says Autumn will change the world.

Billy begins counting down from five. Royal calls him a “child.” Irate, After Royal apologizes, Billy changes positions, so he is standing in front of him, with his gun drawn. Before leaving, he warns Royal that something will potentially happen to Amy.

Perry and Amy are at Dippie’s. Amy reminds him of how her mother never liked living at the ranch. She asks if he is okay with her leaving with her mother if she returns. He assures her it will be fine. Amy goes inside for some fries while Perry remains outside. Autumn is in the restroom. Staring at herself in a mirror, she promises to erect an altar. She promises to take control of a portal that leads from the pest to the past. She describes herself as the “Mother of Undying Time.” She rushes outside to tell perry something about Royal.

Joy gets tearful when she sees her daughter dancing. Martha admits she is proud of her because she succeeded. Joy assures her that something seems to be missing.

Luke sets at Wayne’s bedside. He straggles him to give him a bear hug before placing a pillow over his face. Wayne begins to struggle but Luke doesn’t let up. Billy demands to know what he is going before jerking him off Wayne. A fight ensues. Luke holds Billy down, asking why he feels the need to sing. Wayne gradually comes through.

Joy visits Frank’s place. While walking around, she discovers a stream of what looks like a dark liquid. She follows the stream into the woods.

Royal walks home, where Perry is waiting on him. Perry suggests they take a ride. They ride their horses across the west pasture to the black hole. Perry is shocked by what he sees. Royal asks if Autumn is the one who told him about it. In a flashback, young Royal (Teaguen Arbogast) and his father (Bryan Macrina) walk along a stream, with their shotguns drawn. Royal fires his weapon at an elk but hits his father instead. Back to the present, Perry stares at him in shock. Royal describes it as an “accident.” Any attempt he made to get his father home was futile. He ran away because it was too heartbreaking to tell his mother and sister.

He is running across the land when he stumbles upon the hole. He jumps into the hole. Royal explains how all he wanted to do is disappear. Perry asks what year it happened. Royal says, “1886.” He claims to have emerged from the hole in 1968. He tells Perry that Cecilia’s family invited him to stay with them. Perry informs him that Autumn knows what happened to him. He suggests it saved him before falling into the hole. Royal breaks down while Autumn watches a short distance away.

Outer Range Review

The most grotesque kiss of all time. Why was it necessary to show a closeup of saliva-swapping? The scene added nothing to the show. Billy is my favorite character, but this, this is too painful to watch.

An uneventful episode. The dialogue is nothing more than a long empty monologue. I can imagine the cast was bored out of their minds.

For this to be the episode leading up to the finale, it fails on so many levels. I don’t feel a connection to any of the characters. At this rate, I expect the finale to be a dud.

I know this is a fictional show, but shouldn’t Perry have lost his freedom? After all, he is out on bond for a murder charge.

  1. I have definite theories on what’s happing here but I don’t want to share them until you’ve seen the last episode. There is a lot of moving parts in the last two episodes. I will tell you though that if you are looking for a neatly wrapped up explanation of it all I did not find that the writers provided it in the closing episode. Maybe that is their intention.

On a sperate note I finished We Hunt Together Series 1, in preparation for Series 2 which is currently airing an Alabi, but I cannot find any valid sources for Series 2. A shame because I really want to watch Series 2. It stars Eva Myles, which you may remember from Keeping Faith, the Welch drama.
