Attracting Awful Things – The episode opens in 2009, with young Eleanor picking a bloody knife up from the floor, she pulls back the curtain to find her father (Rob Torr) in a tub of bloody water. Distraught, she contemplates calling 999 but instead listens to “Novocain Stain” by Modest Mouse. The show switches to a different scene, with Lucy (Krysten Ritter), Jules (Amanda Fix), and Craig (Jonathan Whittaker) suffering from a gunshot wound. Craig refuses to let them call 999. Xander (Vinson Tran) grabs a medicine bottle and Paul Darros’ (James Hiroyuki Liao) key before fleeing. Jules goes after him while Lucy stays with Craig.
Jules finds an intoxicated Xander outside. After retrieving Darros’ key, she prepares to leave when he pleads with her to help him. Jules calls Eleanor Miller (Rya Kihlstedt) and Kira Manning (Keeley Hawes) to inform them of what is happening. Elsewhere, Lucy ties a tourniquet around Craig’s leg. Jones knocks on the door to check on him. Craig assures him that he is fine. After Jones leaves, Craig reminds Lucy that the shelter houses mostly ex-cons. He asks her to retrieve his Jimmy Jameson Whiskey and wound care supplies. Out of sight, she texts Jack (Avan Jogla) asking for his help.
In sign language, Charlie (Zariella Langford) asks Jack how can Lucy go with them without a passport. He assures her that they will figure out something when he receives Lucy’s text. Charlie insists he helps Lucy. Charlie and Jack disagree on why her mum left. He tells her that Lucy is not like her mum. She voices concern about Lucy leaving if he refuses to help her.
Eleanor tells Kira that Darros’ key is for the storage of his important records. Kira says an important launch is marked on Josh Tartakovich’s (Izad Etemadi) calendar for two days from now. Jules suggests accessing Darros’ files and exposing him. Kira’s aunt, Delphine Cormier (Evelyne Brochu) approaches warning it will not be easy. Elsewhere, Tom (Reed Diamond) researches Jack.
Delphine claims Felix told her about Kira creating a bio-printed Eleanor. Jules questions Delphine’s connection to what is going on. Delphine tells her that she is married to Cosima, a clone along with her sister, Sarah. Kira assures them that Darros’ company’s finances are highly secure. Jules suggests Neva Lee (Alexandra Castillo) might be able to help them.
Craig tells Lucy that he is wanted for setting a corporate office on fire with someone in it when he was young.
During a phone call, Tom explains what it was like to see Celine’s hologram. He offers the person event tickets before asking for his DOD contact.
Delphine says while working for Leekie, her curiosity about evolution and genetics got the best of her and she crossed the line. Kira blames the raid on her Additive Foundation on Darros. Later, Neva tries her passkey but it has been deactivated. Emmanuel (Fode Bangoura) declines them access until Delphine claims her son gambled his trust fund away and it is vital they access their finances before the trust changes hands.
Eleanor puts a serum in Jules’ tea. Jules asks if Lucas Manning (Jaeden Noel) knows about Kira utilizing his blood. Eleanor claims to have explained everything to Lucas. Jules compliments her for being a good mother.
Lucy updates Craig on Eleanor and Jules’s progress towards finding the key. After trying to convince her that he’s fine and she no longer needs to look after him, she admits to struggling with her father’s suicide. She says after seeing Craig shot, she understands why Eleanor blames herself for not doing more for her father. She asks if she is the type of person that could sit idly by and do nothing. He tells her it’s honestly what you do in the present that matters. Their conversation is soon interrupted by the arrival of Jack.
Scouring through Darros’s financials, Kira reminds Delphine that Neva Lee (Alexandra Castillo) has bought them 30 minutes. Seconds later, Delphine discovers a suspicious real estate purchase that totals $44 billion. They are shocked further when they learn the address, 5634 Foster Road, leads to a tiny piece of coastline. Kira points out that it’s only an hour away, but Delphine claims she can’t accompany her.
Lucy thanks Jack for coming. He claims he didn’t come for her before the two of them convince Craig to let Jack examine the wound. Lucy is ordered out of the room when Craig requests some privacy. Kira arrives at 5634 Foster Road to find what appears to be a typical coastline home with a dock and boathouse.
As Jack examines his wound, Craig reveals that he’s been living the past 20 years on a printed liver that was part of a trial program. Upon closer examination, Jack realizes the bullet nicked a vein and Craig will likely bleed out if he doesn’t get to a hospital soon. Craig refuses to go, claiming that he has an outstanding warrant and is more than happy to die at the Settlement House.
From the inside, the beach home appears abandoned but it’s mere seconds before Kira notices a larger replica of the security key stolen from Darros’s office. After pulling the smaller key out of her pocket, it magnetically attaches itself to the larger version. Although the images scroll across the screen in sync, a robotic voice announces an incorrect thought pattern and a 30-minute countdown begins. Seconds later, Kira is on the phone with Eleanor who claims to have recently read about the new advanced security. When Jules learns that only a memory from Darros’s past will open the door, she suggests using Xander. Jules tells Xander that they need to become Darros to save Kira but he refuses. He admits to being frightened of one of Darros’s memories.
Jack attempts to keep Craig’s organs from shutting down with a blood transfusion from Lucy. Near death, Craig admits how proud he is of his work at the Settlement Home and what a privilege it has been to see Lucy build her own family.
Xander arrives at the coastline property with a little less than a minute left on the panel. As he steps up to the device, he remembers being gravely injured and Darros letting him die. Once the countdown is deactivated, the panel reveals a collection of medical records.
Asleep with Charlie at her side, Tina is woken by distant clanging. Carefully making her way to the living room, she discovers and assaults Tom. Although he’s injured and she surprises him from behind, he narrowly manages to inject her with the needle he brought along. Before the substance consumes her, he tries to learn of Lucy’s whereabouts. She refuses to give up anything and when she goes out, he discovers Charlie watching.
Eleanor and Kira debate how Darros has gotten access to everyone’s medical records. Eleanor can only guess that he somehow bribed someone extremely connected at the Central Medical Database Center. At Eleanor’s suggestion, they learn that the last activity on the machine leads to full body scans of 12 individuals. Those individual’s names are encrypted.
While Craig recovers, Jack tells Lucy the transfusion couldn’t have gone better. As she thanks him, he receives a call from Tina’s phone. The episode ends with him telling Lucy that someone has taken Charlie.
Orphan Black Echoes Review
I’m confused as to how Craig evaded arrest for so long since he operates a shelter in the city. The episode adds little to nothing to the story which is disappointing with the finale up next.
Too many characters without a purpose. Craig, Delphine, Neva, Tom, and Wes are just a few examples.
Jack’s vein-to-vein transfusion from Lucy to Craig is laughable at best. If the bullet lacerated Craig’s blood vessel, he would have probably died before Jack’s arrival. Although he is a former Army medic, it would be too risky for both Craig and Lucy. It has zero relevance to the story like far too many other scenes.
The episode deserves a 5. Get more Orphan Black Echoes recaps here. Support Reel Mockery by donating. Our onsite advertising builds brand awareness, click the link to learn more. Join our forum to discuss the latest TV shows, high-publicity crimes, and more.
