ordeal by innocence arthur

As the episode beings, Arthur Calgary (Luke Treadaway) thinks about Jack (Anthony Boyle) and his own past. He approaches the family’s home. Hester (Ella Purnell) confronts him outside and tries to get him to leave. Mickey (Christian Cooke) comes outside and puts Arthur in his car. He takes him to the train station and forces him to leave town. Tina (Crystal Clarke) visits her mother’s grave. She speaks with Hester there. Hester tells her about Arthur visiting again. During lunch, Philip (Matthew Goode) asks Mickey about visiting Arthur. Then, he gets into an argument with everyone. He asks Tina where she was on the night of the murder. She says that she was elsewhere. He also believes that something happened between Tina and Mickey.

Arthur has a flashback to the night of the murder. He remembers running into Jack. We see that Arthur is wearing a hospital outfit of sorts. He forces the train to stop and jumps off. Tina is harassed in town. She flips out. She curses at the boys and throws her shoes at them. When she returns home, Leo (Bill Nighy) scolds her. He also tells her that she is his best girl. In a flashback, we see Kirsten (Morven Christie) taking the kids to play in the woods. Arthur finds a phone and calls the family. He threatens to go to the police. Kirsten listens in on the conversation. Gwenda (Alice Eve) tells Leo to do nothing and let Arthur speak with the cops. In another flashback, we see Bellamy Gould (Brian McCardie) taking over the investigation.

Bellamy finds Arthur on the road. He tells him that he’ll meet him at the station before continuing on. Moments later, the vehicle comes speeding towards Arthur. He manages to step aside and avoid it. The car crashes into a wall and Bellamy dies. Mary (Eleanor Tomlinson) tries to be nice to Philip. In return, he belittles her. Hester tells Philip that he needs to be nicer to his wife. He forces her to kiss him. Mary walks in on them kissing. Arthur returns to the family’s home. He tells Hester that he has been lying. He escaped from an asylum on the night of the murder. He wasn’t doing research. He was locked in the asylum instead. The kids watch as Arthur speaks with Leo. Kirsten listens in. She heads downstairs and hides in her bedroom. Arthur tells Leo about Bellamy trying to run him down. Leo promises to let Arthur speak with his solicitor in the morning.

In a flashback, we see Jack humiliating the family. Then, Jack flirts with Bellamy’s wife, Lydia (Frances Grey). It is clear that the two are having an affair. Kirsten notices them. Then, Bellamy accuses Jack of stealing from them. Jack tells him about the affair. He also kisses him on the lips and accuses him of being a pedophile. Arthur promises not to tell on Philip. Arthur joins the family for dinner. He tells them about the car. He believes that it was brown. He leaves after Gwenda ridicules him a few times. Mary confronts Tina about the red car she had. When everyone leaves, Mickey tells Tina that she needs to think about what she is going to say. Gwenda  tries to talk Leo out of speaking with his solicitor. She wants to make sure that he makes it to their wedding.

When Mary returns to Philip, she finds that he is drunk and paranoid. He has no intention of going to bed. Mary tells the others a story about the night in question. Mary doesn’t believe her. She gets into an argument with them. Then, she claims that they all ruined it. It should have been just her and her mother. Philip tries to call the police, but Leo stops him. Arthur visits Philip. He learns that Philip believes everyone was involved. He forces Arthur out when he doesn’t believe it. Kirsten is shown in the shadows when Arthur returns to his room. She heads towards Philip’s room. Arthur locks his door. Philip tries to escape the house. He is confronted by someone. In the morning, Arthur accuses Leo of sending Bellamy after him. Leo promises that he didn’t. Arthur eventually believes him.

Arthur explains that he helped make the bombs that were dropped on Japan. He is trying to atone by helping clear Jack’s name. Kirsten remembers visiting Rachel (Anna Chancellor). She is crying and claims that Rachel promised her something. In the present, she listens as Leo and Arthur chat about Jack. Then, they visit Philip’s room. They find him dead in the shower.

Ordeal By Innocence

This episode of Ordeal by Innocence was just as good as the first. The story is gripping. It is very realistic and the acting is great. This is definitely one of the best television shows I have watched in some time. I can’t wait to get to the final episode to see how things play out. I am sure that things will turn out differently than I believe. The episode scores a solid 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Ordeal by Innocence now!
