Dexter debuted on Showtime on October 1, 2006 and quickly became one of the network’s most successful serial dramas. The series held viewers’ attentions for eight seasons and kept them guessing through 96 thrilling episodes. The original broadcast of the series finale drew 2.8 million viewers making it the largest overall audience in Showtime’s history.

In October of 2020, Dexter fans rejoined when Showtime confirmed that the series would be returning with the premiere likely coming in late 2021. What do we know so far?

 

Michael C. Hall & Clyde Phillips

While Dexter will undoubtedly look different in 2021, some elements of the show will be carried over from the previous seasons. Most notably, two of the people responsible for the show’s success will be returning. This includes showrunner Clyde Phillips and leading actor Michael C. Hall.

Since Dexter’s original run ended, Phillips has gone on to serve as the executive producer for Nurse Jackie and Feed the Beast. Michael C. Hall has kept busy with television shows Safe and Shadowplay. The return of both will give fans hope that the revival will maintain the same quality as the original.

 

New Additions

Michael C. Hall will be joined by Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Johnny Sequoyah, Alano Miller, and Jack Alcott.

Julia Jones will play Angela Bishop, the first Native American Chief of Police in her upstate New York town. Johnny Sequoyah will play her brash, opinionated teenage daughter Audrey. Alano Miller will appear as Logan who is a sergeant with the Iron Lake Police Department and assistant wrestling coach at the local high school.

Finally, Jack Alcott will play Randall who will have a meaningful encounter with Dexter.

 

When Is Dexter Returning?

Unfortunately, there is no set release date for the new 10-episode season of Dexter. Originally, it was expected that the revival would air sometime in late 2021 but that date might’ve been pushed back by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, a Showtime press release indicated that production on the Dexter limited series would begin in early 2021 in Massachusetts.

Showtime is available to many cable subscribers. In addition, it is available as a stand-alone streaming service through Amazon, Apple, Google, Roku, select smart TVs, and more.
