My Lady Jane Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

I’m Gonna Change The World – The episode opens with King Edward (Jordan Peters) surrounded by nuns. Granny/Margaret Beaufort (Barbara Marten) says they intervened to keep Princess Mary (Kate O’Flynn) from killing him. She claims they had the antidote to the poison. He tells her that Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader) said there was no antidote. Sister Forbearance (Annabelle Mandeng) rescued him from the Turret. Edward wants to return to the Palace but Granny insists he stay to rest. At the Palace, Jane comes to and immediately races to the stables. Rupert (Stewart Scudamore) assures her that Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel) is safe but Mary has taken the cryptic letters. Lady Frances Grey (Anna Chancellor) knocks on Jane’s chamber.

At an Ethian camp, Jacob (Jamie Bisping) says they have 30 days to decide if they want to align with the Scotts. Archer (Michael Workeye) suggests accepting their terms. Susannah (Mairead Tyers) argues that Scotland is a Verity ruler like England. Jacob claims the Queen of Scotland is offering them full rights if they fight alongside them against England. Archer says the Ethians would need to help the Scots take the English throne. A group of Kingsland guards raid the camp. Jacob is hit in the chest with an arrow.  A guard yells, “For England and Queen Jane.” Susannah is shocked by the revelation. A fight breaks out between the Ethians and the Kingsland guards.

Lord Dudley (Rob Brydon) informs Jane that Mary has an alibi, Lord Seymour (Dominic Cooper). She insists on getting the Privy Council involved. He warns that Mary will make her look like a deranged liar and utilize it to have her dethroned. He urges her to name Guildford her King. She reminds him that Edward named her as his heir. He says if she gets the Nobility on her side, Mary will not have a chance at the throne. Charles (Christian Patterson) gives Jane a feather from an Irish girl. Elsewhere, Mary voices concern about Jane telling someone that she tried to kill her. Seymour calmly says Jane has no evidence. A short time later, Mary asks Lord Norfolk (Will Keen) to make her queen. He agrees but only if she appoints him to serve as her Lord Chancellor. She initially refuses because Seymour is her Lord Chancellor. He claims Seymour’s mother said he enjoyed spankings. She describes Seymour’s habit as despicable. He vows to send 5k men to fight for her.

Frances tells Lady Margaret Grey (Robyn Betteridge) that the Countess of Swinford has agreed to teach her obedience. Lady Katherine Grey (Isabella Brownson) recalls a girl dying while in Swinford’s care. Frances claims the girl was sickly. Elsewhere, Susannah confronts Jane about the Kingsland raid on the Ethian camp. Jane denies ordering the raid. Calmed down, Susannah warns Jane that things are only going to get worse. Jane promises there will be no more raids before disbanding the Kingsland guards. She threatens to hang anyone caught disregarding her orders. Dudley and Seymour warn her against the disbandment but she doesn’t budge. When Mary finds out, she tries to attack Jane but Seymour intervenes. Dudley tells Jane that King Henry left Mary’s mother, Katherine, for an Ethian, Anne Boleyn. Jane says hatred is Mary’s weakness.

Jane tells Susannah about her research for an Ethian cure. Susannah claims there is no cure before explaining a failed treatment that utilizes pain to stop Ethians from changing. She insists Jane never question the Ethians’ right to exist ever again. Jane seals Archer’s invitation when Frances knocks on the door. She gives it to Susannah before she goes out the window. After telling Jane about Guildford’s Ethianism, Frances says she will have the divorce papers prepared immediately. Jane says no and reminds her that she is the Queen. Frances scoffs at the thought of Jane being in love with Guildford. Jane walks to the stables to see Guildford who is terribly concerned about her welfare. She orders him to kiss her. After an intimate kiss, she asks what if she doesn’t want a divorce. While they get undressed, she wonders if she will like it. He says hopefully and offers to show her what to do. A short time later, she confesses to inviting the Ethians to the Coronation Banquet. He warns her that it will upset the Nobility. She suggests Mary will not be able to control her anger and attack her at the banquet in front of the Nobility. He describes her plan as “genius.” Jane asks Guildford if he is aware of Dudley asking her to make him her king. He claims to have only wanted to be cured.

Fitz (Joe Klocek) warns Edward that he is in danger. Edward refuses to go with him. Fitz morphs into a cat and hurriedly ascends the stairs. Sister Forbearance and another nun enter the room. At the Palace, Petunia (Tallulah Greive) tells Princess Bess (Abbie Hern) that she needs to reach Granny before nightfall. Bess questions what Granny has in mind for Edward before slipping a note under Jane’s door. In the stables, Jane wakes up beside Guildford the horse. A short time later, Petunia, the dog leads Bess into a trap. Seymour transports Bess to Kenninghall where she will not interfere with Mary becoming Queen. Seymour confiscates Jane’s letter. Elsewhere, Edward informs Granny of his plan to return to the Palace. She morphs into a tortoise and back into a human. She claims he is an Ethian. He argues that he has never changed. She says he will be the first Ethian king.

At the Palace, Margaret is practicing with a wooden sword when Seymour approaches and gives her his real sword. They pretend sword fighting. Swinging his sword over her head, it punctures a rug before sticking into the wall. Elsewhere, Dudley shows Lord Stan Dudley (Henry Ashton) his crown designs when Frances barges into the room. Stan calls her darling. She orders him to leave but he refuses. She tells Dudley that Stan told her about Guildford’s Ethianism. Dudley suggests it doesn’t matter.

Seymour barges into the chamber to find Mary entertaining Norfolk. Upon leaving, Norfolk tells Mary that his men will arrive at midnight. She informs Seymour of her plan to appoint Norfolk as her Lord Chancellor when she is queen. She orders him to bend over but he refuses to budge until he shows him some respect. Jerking his ring from her neck, she says they are over. He sarcastically hopes she has fun at the banquet by herself. She laughs as he walks out the door. Elsewhere, Agnes (Ami Tredrea) is helping Jane dress when Guildford arrives bearing his mother’s pearl earrings. While attaching them to her ear, he denies having any hope until he met her. Dudley intrudes on their conversation. A short time later, they arrive at her Coronation Banquet. Norfolk and Lord Scrope (Jason Forbes) tell Jane about the riots at Cheapside. Guilford assures them that they are always rioting. Mary blames Jane for the riots. Charles alerts Jane of the Ethians’ arrival. Frances orders Katherine to remove her jewels but she refuses. During a speech, Jane offers her Verity guests the option of living in unity with the Ethians. She suggests ending the Division Laws before Archer, Owen (Will Merrick), Susannah, Rose (Boni Adeliyi), and other Ethians arrive.

Jane asks Mary to lead them in a toast. Mary dares Jane to taint King Henry’s Palace the abomination. Jane admits to inviting them and steps toward Mary. Irate, Mary starts to threaten Jane but stops herself. She screams loudly before leaving. The celebrations continue. Archer asks Jane if she is serious about ending Division Laws. She urges him to help her convince the Verity Nobility to support them. Guildford asks Owen and Rose if they are familiar with a cure for Ethianism. They boast of their Ethian abilities and deny needing a cure. Getting Guildford alone, Jane tells him that there is no cure and he doesn’t need one. Upset, he tells her to heal him and regrets trusting her before walking away. She pursues him. At the banquet, Katherine asks Stan to introduce her to William (Brandon Grace). He tells her that love is dead. William approaches Katherine and compliments her gown. Frances orders her and Margaret to go to bed. Owen tells Guildford that he knows where he can find an Ethian cure. Downtrodden, Jane returns to her chamber where Petunia is waiting to offer her help to prove Seymour and Mary’s guilt.

Margaret complains about Frances’ plan to send her away for discipline training. Seymour assures her that Jane can fix it. Margaret says Jane is busy. Seymour manipulates her into telling her about Jane questioning an herbalist about a poison. Jane orders Mary and Seymour’s arrests but they have already fled the Kingdom. The episode ends.

 

My Lady Jane Review

Lady Jane survives an assignation attempt. She executes a plan to catch Mary in the act of treason in front of the Nobility. Jane invites Archer and the Ethians to her Coronation Banquet. Mary thwarts Jane’s plan by controlling her anger. In the meantime, Mary plots with Lord Norton to rage war against Jane and replace Seymour as her Lord Chancellor.

Seymour befriends Margaret to learn Jane plans to arrest him and Mary for food poisoning Edward. When Norton betrays her, she rekindles her conniving relationship with Seymour. Jane orders their arrest. Thanks to Margaret, Seymour and Mary are one step ahead of Jane.

It dawns on Jane that she is in love with Guildford. Reconsidering their proposal, she allows him to make love to her. Susannah tells Jane that there is no known cure for Ethianism. While devastated, Guildford feels Jane betrayed him. An Ethian, Owen claims to know where he find a cure.

Edward learns he is an Ethian. Granny wants to make him the first Ethian king. The episode deserves a 6 out of 10.
