Fall From Grace – The episode opens at Lunitas with Daisy (Arianna McGregor) and Rose (Nicole LaPlace) celebrating the Wildcats.. Isabella Harbud (Savonna Spracklin) claims to be glad Brent never came but Edwina Yen (Mya Lowe) doesn’t believe her. Daisy and Rose are thrilled to see Bella (Eman Osman). Bella snaps their photo, hands her camera to Daisy, and falls on her way to the restroom. Daisy and Rose film her on the ground. Rose pulls her up when they see what Bella was sitting on. A corpse covered by a tarp. The girls frantically yell for someone to call 911.
24 Hours Earlier – Cassandra and Gibsons Police of Chief Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) reminisce about their high school years. She tells him about her upcoming high school reunion. Kayla Sabiston (Malaika Hennie-Hamadi) pulls into a parking garage, emerges from her car, and is startled when Bobby Ransome (Greyston Holt) sneaks up and grabs her. She asks who was the girl that he was with last night and insists they stop before someone sees them. They start making out. Someone is recording them from nearby. Later, she returns home to find Ivan Sabiston (Nathan White) and Sam Sabiston (Jarod Joseph) talking business. Sam goes off to bed. Ivan asks about her night out. She claims to have spent it with her girlfriends.
Karl shows Cassandra Sam’s sailboat that he may buy. He invites her to the school dance. She accepts. At the jail, Dougie Hewitt (Justin Anthony) and Ronnie (Garrett Quirk) have no idea where they are. Gibsons Deputy Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas) says they urinated on his cruiser. Isabella asks Dougie and Ronnie about Brent Dean. Dougie believes he never married and will be at the reunion. Edwina Yen (Mya Lowe) teases her. At Molly’s Reach, Cassandra finds Phyllis Diaz (Fiona Vroom) working alone because Leah called in. Phyllis complains about Bella refusing her order three times. While preparing to pitch in, Cassandra tells her that she and Karl are going to the dance. Kayla asks Daisy, Rosie, and Bella to tell Ivan that she was with them last night if he asks. Daisy suggests she was with Bobby. Bella says she doesn’t deserve Ivan before returning her food to the kitchen. Kayla claims to love Ivan when he arrives with a photo of her and Bobby making out. She assures him that it is fake. He says it is over between them. She repeatedly apologizes while following him outside. Bobby shows up and a fight breaks out between him and Ivan. Cassandra calls Karl and he shows up to break up the fight. Ivan vows to kill Bobby. Kayla tries to apologize to Ivan but he wants nothing to do with her. Karl hands Bobby a bottle of water and asks for his ID. He gives him a warning. Upon leaving, Bobby tosses the bottle on the ground. Karl orders him to pick it up. He reluctantly does it.
24 Hours Later – Isabella and Yen are at Lunitas when they hear Bella, Rose, and Daisy scream. They race over to get a closer look. A short time later, Karl pulls back the tarp to reveal the corpse is that of Bobby. At the police station, Karl tells his team that the cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head. Sid insists someone put him in the tarp. Gibsons Deputy Andy Kendrick (Fritzy-Kelvans) Destine) claims Bobby’s aunt wasn’t surprised. Later, Karl finds Ivan asleep on the sofa at his house. He informs him of Bobby’s death. Bobby and Ivan were good friends until Ivan got mixed up with some bad people. Ivan claims Kayla dated Bobbie before they hooked up and after they married, she got back with Bobby. He admits to drinking a lot and didn’t treat her very well. He forgave her and they got back together. Ivan denies seeing Bobby after the fight and claims to have spent the night with Sam until he fell asleep at midnight. He never changed clothes. Later, Karl arrives at Sabiston Development where Sam is working. Sam says Ivan called him after the fight and he tried to talk him down. He picked up some fish and chips before going home to wait for Ivan who arrived before midnight. Ivan assures him that Ivan had nothing to do with Bobby’s death.
Dr. Olive Duvall (Crystal Balint) tells Karl that Bobby was hit in the back of the head three times with a metal object. She suggests the killer was left-handed. He recalls Ivan punching Bobby with his left hand. She says his clothes were covered with sand-like material. A ferry worker reports Ivan is trying to leave Gibsons. Karl sends Yen to find Ivan. Kayla tells Karl that she hadn’t spoken for two years until he sent her a text several weeks ago. She says he delivers coke to the oilfield workers. She claims to love Ivan. Ivan continues to profess his innocence and swears he was with Sam at 9pm. Karl tells him that Sam gave a different account of what happened. Ivan says someone sent him photos of Kayla and Bobby together. At Molly’s Reach, Phyllis grills Cassandra for information about Bobby’s death. Cassandra refuses to indulge her. At the police station, Karl learns whoever sent the photos to Sam utilized a VPN. Assessing the photos, Sid and Karl agree the photographer was a professional. Searching local studios, Karl discovers Grear Photography utilizes the same style and composition.
At Grear Photography Studio, Karl is looking through a stack of photos when he spots a photo of Bobby and Wanda Grear (Charlotte Kavanagh) together. She says they dated in high school. He accuses her of taking and sending the photos of Kayla and Bobby to Ivan. After initially denying the allegation, she admits to following Bobby because she knew he was going to meet Kayla. Karl finds a photo of Bobby and Sam holding surfboards.
The dance is in full force when Cassandra and Karl arrive. None of the guys are wearing a suit like Karl. Dead waves at Isabella from across the dance floor. While dancing, Cassandra informs Karl that Sam is having financial trouble. He leaves her on the dance floor and goes over to talk to Sam. He sees Sam is left-handed like Ivan. He suggests Bobby’s business in town was with Sam. When Sam denies the allegation, Karl reminds him that he hired Bobby to sell marijuana at the school. Sam denies the allegation and refuses to talk about his financial situation. Karl calls Sid to order a background check on Sam. Sid tells him that the stain on Bobby’s clothes is mostly iron, possibly steel. Recalling a worker cutting rebar, Karl shares his theory with Olive who continues to dance. He kisses Cassandra and orders Andy to watch Sam before asking Sid to meet him at the construction site on Hennessy. Isabella reluctantly approaches Dean. A short time later, Sid arrives at the construction site to find Karl hasn’t arrived yet. While looking around, he hears a loud noise. Karl calls Andy to find out that Sam left the dance 20 minutes ago. Upon arriving at the construction site, he finds Sid lying on the ground. A vehicle speeds away. By the time Yen and Andy arrive, Sid is sitting up. Someone knocked him out. Yen informs them that Sam borrowed money from a crime syndicate in Seattle. Andy helps Sid to his vehicle. Karl imagines someone swinging a piece of rebar and discovers a strange substance on the ground.
Olive assures Sid that he will be okay but he is not to drive. Yen informs Kayla that Ivan is no longer a suspect in Bobby’s murder. Kayla accesses Ivan’s voicemail. In one voicemail, a man says Wally Symes needs to talk to him. Kayla says Wally is Ivan and Sam’s former business partner. Sam tells them that Wally runs the Brentwood Lodge and lives in Crestwood. At Wally’s Pride and Joy, an armed Sam tells Ivan that he started selling coke to pay off debt and Bobby was delivering the coke to the man camps until he cut him out. He admits to killing Bobby but alleges it was self-defense. He urges Ivan to help him make it look like a drug deal gone wrong. Ivan accuses him of trying to pin Bobby’s murder on him. Sam says he has the family business to run. As Ivan walks away, Sam draws his gun and insists they get their story straight. Ivan agrees and grabs for Sam’s gun. When Sam gets control of the gun, he threatens to shoot Ivan. Armed, Karl orders him to put the gun down. Sam places the gun on the ground.
Ivan signs his statement. Kayla is waiting when he emerges from the police station. He walks past her without speaking. Elsewhere, Karl slips a corsage on Cassandra’s wrist and apologizes. She suggests it will never be easy and reminds him of their Saturday date. The episode ends.
Murder In A Small Town Review
The episode was a lot less about Karl’s strange way of solving murders and more about the case. When he gets an idea in his head, he drops everything and refocuses on the case. Cassandra is always on the losing end. He keeps apologizing and she keeps forgiving. So early into their relationship, it’s difficult to see them having a future together.
The episode deserves a 5.7 out of 10. Get more Murder In A Small Town recaps here. Join our newly established forum to see what others are saying. Support our site by donating. Learn about our advertising packages here.
