Danny Grossman Mr. Throwback Peacock NBC

Mr. Throwback Season 1 Episode 2 Recap

Charlie World – The second episode begins with Sam/Samantha Judlow (Ayden Mayeri) nagging at Danny Grossman (Adam Pally) for not telling Stephen Curry (Stephen Curry) the truth about Charlie Grossman’s (Layla Scalisi) illness. Regardless of how he tries to justify it, the footage suggests that he’s enjoying the perks too much to give them up. This dispute is tabled when Charlie tells them about Violet G (Maya Keane) scheduling her birthday party on the same night as her. While Danny realizes he dropped the ball on everything from the cupcakes to the balloons, Sam assures Charlie that she will speak with G’s mom, Sloan (Rebecca Spence). This doesn’t go as planned and ends up with Sloan blaming one of Sam’s patients for her getting COVID.

Danny is right in the middle of trying to tell Stephen the truth when he learns that the double booking was intentional. Assuming that it could be Charlie’s last birthday, Stephen is equally outraged and sees to it that Kim/Kimberly (Ego Nwodim) plans the event of a lifetime. To his credit, Danny claims he needs to check with Sam first but her approval only further blurs the ethical lines. Danny doesn’t waste a second relishing the moment.

Sam and Danny show up at Klein Art Building, more eager than ever to help Kim plan Charlie’s party. Little do they know, she only needs to know two things, Charlie’s favorite color and her favorite movie. With the huge gaping hole in their schedule, Danny convinces Sam to join him for dinner, at Stephan’s expense. Things are awkward right from the moment they arrive, but turns out much better than expected. This is until the wine begins flowing and the debate about the failure of their relationship begins. Much to Sam’s surprise, Danny ultimately takes responsibility and this later leads to them ending the night in bed together.

While Sam and Danny enjoy dinner, Kim puts the finishing touches on Charlie’s party while also providing Lucy (Tien Tran) and her crew with a brief rundown of what an average day in her life entails.

The next day, it immediately becomes clear that Sam and Danny’s night together meant different things to each of them. Danny seems to take it as a sign that he’s moving back in while for her, it was affirmation that they don’t belong together.

Ayesha Curry (Ayesha Curry) is just as moved as Stephan was when she hears about Charlie’s condition. Although she couldn’t make a personal appearance due to conflicting schedule issues, she sends her cousin/stylist Randy (Ryan Janata) in her place. Randy wastes little time or expense getting Sam ready for Charlie’s party. Sam is clearly uncomfortable with the luxury but that all changes the moment Doctor Josh (Rich Sommer) shows up.

Charlie’s party is such a hit that Sloan and Violet even show up. Sam wastes little time taking advantage of the moment, taking complete responsibility for the party. Getting caught up in the moment she inadvertently lets it slip that Charlie is dying. She immediately regrets the slip.

The episode ends with even enjoying the party, including Doctor Josh and Sam. It is also revealed that Stephen bought the nightclub where Violet G was hosting her party and closed it down.

Mr. Throwback Review

The episode wasn’t the best but it was a good way to build on the momentum from the premiere. I did enjoy the birthday competition and Sam’s coming over to the dark side. Randy wouldn’t have been such a bad addition to the cast list if he wasn’t so flamboyantly loud. Hopefully, he won’t be making many more appearances. Danny and Sam’s sleeping together and her subsequent meeting Dr. Josh adds some potentially decent conflict. I’d have to give the episode a 5.3 out of 10.
