Never Too Much – The episode begins with DI Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) visiting Aqua Vanech (Mary Malone) and bringing her up-to-date on everything she’s learned about Josh Buchanan (Ashley Walters). As Kat raves on like a lunatic, Aqua becomes frustrated and tells her that Josh does not want to talk to her. With the cat out of the bag, Aqua has no option but to tell Kat that she’s seen Josh twice since he left her. The first time was only several months after he left Kat and actually spoke to her. The second time was 6 months ago at a yoga class in the park but she only saw him. Kat happened to be at the class as well. Kat does not take this well but doesn’t get long to harp about it because she receives a call from Stacey Embalo (Jessica Plummer).
Kat meets with Stacey to learn that Josh was in a bad bar fight 11 years ago. He got arrested and everything but after he bailed out, it was like he vanished, no bank accounts or anything. After leaving the meeting with Stacey, Kat takes a walk in the park where she stops at the gazebo where the yoga classes are held. A call from Charlie Pitts (Charlie Hamblett), asking if she’s coming into work, draws her out of her reverie. After learning that Charlie doesn’t know anything about her suspension, she gets him to forward the ATM footage of Dana Fells (Lisa Faulkner) to her phone. She also asks about the Rishi Magari (Rudi Dharmalingam) case but there is nothing new to report there.
Nia Emine (Catherine Ayers) is called into DCI Ellis Stagger’s (Richard Armitage) office and told about Kat’s suspension. She is also taken off the Rishi case and ordered not to have any contact with Kat until she is authorized to come back to work. Nia relays the news to Charlie, who at the same time realizes his grave mistake.
Brendan Fells (Oscar Kennedy) meets Kat at her place to go over the ATM footage. Nothing new is discovered there, but Brendan has done some work of his own with Josh’s dating app photo. It turns out that he created a Facebook profile, deleted it, and even later changed the name to Reggie Cross. A search of the name, Reggie Cross, doesn’t turn up anything else useful.
Kat tries to go into the station but discovers that her access has been redacted. Although she slips in through an open door, she discovers the same with her computer access. She quickly uses Charlie’s computer to access more of Dana’s ATM footage. She is in the process of recording the footage on her phone when she is caught by a very upset Charlie, who demands she immediately delete the footage. When Kat tells Charlie everything she’s learned and asks him to investigate her ex, he thinks he’s being hazed. Kat ends up storming off while Charlie follows behind and vilifies her for getting involved in an active police investigation.
Outside the station, Kat watches the footage and sees Dana get into a car. She calls Brendan and asks if his mother used any particular taxi service. He tells her that she uses Albert Cabs. As it turns out, the lady at Albert Cabs not only knows Dana but she apparently used to date Brendan. Kat learns that Dana did buy a cab for 8:00 pm on Saturday night, but later canceled and said that her boyfriend was getting her a Bentley instead.
At the same time, one of Titus Monroe’s (Steve Pemberton) drivers, Claude, is called to meet with Titus. This encounter explains how Dana got caught on the ATM footage. Claude had forgotten his wallet at him and while on a run, he asked Dana to stop and take some money out of her account just in case he needed it. Although Claude admits to spending half the money and promises to pay it back, Titus has him killed anyway.
Brendan reaches out to his Uncle Arthur ‘Arty’ Bork (Alex Waldmann) to inquire about his mother’s account but it is practically brushed off. As soon as Brendan hangs up, he is tackled by someone in a hoodie and hits his head on a rock. Elsewhere, Kat leaves a message for Charlie, requesting his help with the license plate from the ATM footage. After hanging up, Kat receives a call from her mother, Odette Donovan (Brigid Zengeni) about little Nancy’s christening that she was invited to the week prior.
Kat uses the christening as an opportunity to question Terrence Kohl (Simon Kunz) about Monte LeBurne (Marc Warren) claiming to have nothing to do with her father’s death. Terrence practically gives her the same answer everyone else has but she doesn’t get too long to debate it thanks to Stagger and a call from the hospital about Brendan.
At the hospital, Brendan apologizes for calling Kat but he still can’t reach his mother and whoever knocked him down also nicked his phone. Before things get much further, Brendan tells her they need to get moving because he’s got a new lead, his Uncle Arty, and his mother’s financial advisor. When Kat and Brendan show up to question Arty about the 125,000 pounds transferred out of Dana’s account, he asks Brendan to step outside. Brendan is initially hesitant but agrees once Kat gives him the okay.
Arty practically tells Kat that Brendan has separation anxiety and claims he ran off one of Dana’s previous boyfriends with his behavior. As for the money, Arty claims it is for a house overseas. Kat appears dubious when Arty says that the man Dana is with proposed.
Sometime later, Kat visits Charlie at home and requests his help with tracking the Swiss bank account Arty referred to earlier. It takes some convincing but Kat gets him to admit that he suspected something was wrong after getting a report from the airline saying that Dana wasn’t on her flight. After learning this, Charlie looked into the license plate from the ATM footage, which led him to a James Isherwood in Machu Picchu. The only problem is that Isherwood owns a Ford and not a Bentley, meaning someone cloned his plate. Kat not only suggests they widen their search further than Costa Rica but she also asks Charlie to run the second fingerprint that was found on her father’s murder weapon. Before leaving Charlie’s house, Kat runs into Nia and the two briefly joke about acting against company policy. As soon as Kat steps foot onto the driveway, she receives a text from Stagger, requesting a meeting.
When Kat finally meets with Stagger, she accuses him of hiding something while he chides her about approaching Terrence at the christening. He eventually comes out and asks her if she thinks he hurt her father. After she tells him something isn’t adding up, he asks her what is missing from Dominic Calligan’s (James Nesbitt) file. It takes her a minute but she finally realizes Calligan could have never gotten as far as he did without having help from the police. After a bit more back-and-forth he practically comes out and tells her that Clint Donovan (Lenny Henry) was in cahoots with Calligan and when he decided he had enough, Calligan had him killed. The conversation ends when Kat asks if her mother knew.
Kat races over to her mother’s house and blows up on her. As it turns out, Odette knew Clint was dirty but didn’t know who he was working for. Kat is further stunned when Odette tells her that Clint also had a girlfriend, as many officers did during his time.
Kat leaves her mother’s house devastated by what she learned. She doesn’t get long to dwell on because she receives a call from Charlie, who discovered that Josh’s dating profile was set up by some 9-year-old kid, Sadie Cross (Amelie Dokubo). After learning this, Kat receives another call from DC Glass with the news that they’ve arrested Brendan’s attacker. While Dana is shown being held captive just as Rishi was, Stagger deletes Charlie’s request to run the fingerprint on Clint’s murder weapon.
The episode ends with Kat learning that Brendan’s attacker was Aqua.
Missing You Review
Although I am really enjoying the twisty, bumpy ride, I must say there is one common problem. It seems as if Kat is always receiving a call or text, or someone is interrupting with a clue. I get that Kat is working a case and she has a lot of people hunting down information from here and there but it would be nice if the clues were set up a bit differently. Despite what might sound like a harsh review, I would give the episode a 5.7 out of 10.
