Miss Scarlet and the Duke Review

Kate Phillips as Miss Scarlet is not a disappointment. Like last season, she is a thorn in The Duke’s side. Phillips’ performance is stellar as always.

My biggest qualm is the slow pace. Eliminating fluff would’ve sped up the pace quite nicely. If the episode was packed with relevant content, losing 10 or 15 minutes wouldn’t have made a difference. I am all for shorter episodes to combat boredom.

The cast did amazingly well to bring their characters to life. The dialogue is mostly on topic, with a bit of rambling here and there. I do question the need for the “master” comment. The Duke’s reasoning for not wanting her to reopen Georgina’s case was legitimate. It had nothing to do with control.

The wardrobe is excellent. The cinematography could utilize tweaking.

The episode deserves a 6.5. Get more Miss Scarlet and the Duke recaps here. Support Reel Mockery by clicking the link to learn more.

Did you get subs for It? I cannot understand it without subs. I can barely understand American shows without subs much less one that is faithful to middle Victorian London dialect. Im ok with Miss Scarlet. Its the Duke I cannot fully follow.

Same here. I managed to make it through it, but I had to keep going back to make sure I got Martin Stuart’s words correctly. I haven’t seen any subtitles yet unfortunately. Wish there were! This was really popular in the US though so I would expect subtitles sooner or later.

Although I see 3 episodes out, no subtitles as of it.

      • James Luther says:

Show is scheduled to run on PBS Materpiece in a few months. I’ll probably just wait on this. For some reason Alabi programming is not popular on hosted content or torrent sites. Sometimes its difficult to find episodes and no one seems to bother with subtitles. But then once it hits Britbox, Stars or PBS it becomes more accessible.

        • ReelMockery says:

Maybe fewer people with Alibi? Through the first 1 and 1/2 episodes, it hasn’t been too bad. IMDB doesn’t have the full cast yet either so I’ve had to check the credit at the end and compare. Some lines are difficult to make out when Eliza speaks a bit too quickly and the Duke is sometimes hard to understand.

Would definitely wait for subtitles if you don’t want to go back and back lol.
