Welcome To Boomtown – As this episode of Miracle Workers begins, Sid (Daniel Radcliffe) talks about the atomic bomb before saying he was born into a world with no past. He has been wandering the endless wasteland alone. Sid runs into a man who begins calling for his friends. He throws a knife at the man and shoots his friends when they arrive. Freya Exaltada (Geraldine Viswanathan) believes she’ll have to do the job herself. She beats Sid until he grabs a knife and stabs her in the leg. Once she climbs on top of him, they insult one another before kissing.
Scraps admits he didn’t see that coming. After getting married, Sid and Freya move to the suburbs or Boomtown. Later, Sid yells at Freya to ask if she has seen his tie. He has never had a 9-to-5 job before. Freya urges him to give it a shot because they need money. Freya feeds Scarps (Jon Bass) like a dog. She thinks she’ll have the locals renouncing their old Gods by lunch. Sid catches up with Morris ‘The Junkman’ Rubinstein (Steve Buscemi) who is his new boss. During Junkman’s lunch break, he tells Sid that he likes to hire one of the underprivileged Wastelanders every year and he got a tax break.
Morris built an empire out of the trash he has been selling. Sid is told he’ll get a desk and snacks are available. Freya approaches the citizens of Boomtown. She commands them to bend the knee or face her axe. Scraps tells everyone that they’re being rude for ignoring their future overlord. TI-90 (Karan Soni) walks over to tell Freya he has been programmed to eliminate her. He admits it was a joke. Freya is happy to see him and Scraps is glad he isn’t going to die. They catch up and discuss what they’ve been doing. Tai tells Freya that they need to talk. Scavenger returns to tell Junkman that the carburetor he sold him was busted. When he tries to attack Junkman, Sid knocks him out.
Junkman invites Sid and his wife over for dinner tonight so they can discuss his future with the company. Tai tells Freya that the people of Boomtown have given up on life since they’ve settled down and work boring jobs. Freya worries she has made a horrible mistake by moving there. Sid catches up with Freya and says he loves it in Boomtown. They get ready for the dinner later. Sid says this feels like somewhere they could be really happy. They meet Junkman for dinner. His house is an authentic McMansion from the 2020s. Holly (Erin Darke) comes out and introduces herself to Sid and Freya. Morris explains that she is a hologram. While they’re away, Scraps ransacks their house. Freya goes to the bathroom where she calls Tai and asks him to come rescue her.
Tai eventually agrees to come help her. Morris thinks he has the best of life although Freya longs for adventure, excitement, and meaning. Morris continues mocking her until Freya says she is going to murder him. Tai bursts through the wall and interrupts before Freya can harm him. Tai says she was supposed to help him back up his files to the cloud. Morris didn’t take them to be robot lovers. He begins insulting them so Tai activates annihilation mode. He shoots all around the room but hits no one. Morris tells Sid and the others to get out. Sid is also fired. As they leave, Freya admits it was her fault because she asked Tai to come. She isn’t ready to settle down or become like those people.
Sid doesn’t want to become like them either. He is only happy there because he is with her. They get back and learn what happened from Scraps. Freya bursts into Morris’s house in the morning. She demands Morris give Sid his job back. When he says no, Freya begins beating him. A battered Morris approaches Sid moments later because he is thinking about giving his job back. That night, Sid tells Freya that he is going to prove to Morris that he belongs there. She thinks they can make Boomtown cool as long as they’re together.
Miracle Workers Review
The fourth episode of Miracle Workers starts with an interesting premise as Sid hooks up with Freya Exaltada who initially wanted to kill him. The couple get married and move to Boomtown where Sid begins working for the Junkman. End Times is definitely different than anything the series has done so far. Whether it is successful will depend on the viewer’s preferences and whether they enjoy the humor.
The cast works well together and the characters are fun this season, but I’d be lying if I said I laughed once during this episode. There were smirk-worthy moments though. Miracle Workers isn’t to be taken seriously so it can be good fun for viewers who are just looking for something to kill time.
If viewers have reasonable expectations and don’t need to laugh nonstop, they may enjoy what Miracle Workers has to offer. This episode scores a 6 out of 10.
