Marya Was Here – The episode begins with Konstantin Noskov’s (Yorick Van Wageningen) girls traveling to Kingstown via a bus. All appears to be going to plan until the bus is stopped for construction on a bridge. Before anyone realizes what’s going on, they are approached by a vehicle-sized forklift and pushed over the side of the bridge, into the water below.

While Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) pounds back shots at his favorite bar, Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley) and Robert Sawyer (Hamish Allan-Headley) raid one of Deverin ‘Bunny’ Washington’s (Tobi Bamtefa) stash houses. Three of Bunny’s associates get caught in the crossfire and if not for Kyle, Robert would have likely been back on the sidelines or in a grave. When Mike receives the full report from Kyle, they also quickly debate the potential of the fallout when Bunny discovers what happened.

After hanging up with Kyle, Mike receives word from Iris (Emma Laird) that Konstantin’s expected shipment is late. At the same time, Ian Ferguson (Hugh Dillon) shares burgers with Charlie (Kenny Johnson) as he tries to recall where more of the victims are buried. Charlie does become slightly frustrated at one point with his inability to remember where he buried a victim, but Ian calms him down by reminding him what important work they are doing. Things get even shakier when Charlie mentions the victim on the porch. Ian assures him that one isn’t important.

Tracy McLusky (Nishi Munshi) arrives at work to find CO Breen (Matthew Del Negro) waiting for her in the parking lot. After a brief joke about VIP parking, she learns that he only transferred to the prison several months ago, which she points out as being odd due to the recent rights. He claims he just wanted to do his civic duty.

Raphael (D Smoke) is working out with his crew when CO Thomas (Benny Mora) interrupts with several guards, claiming that Warden Kareem (Michael Beach) wants a word. By the time Raphael realizes something is off, he is attacked by an Aryan. Much to Thomas’ surprise, Raphael fends off the attack, forcing them to call for backup. Instead, they stick him in solitary.

It is a phone call from Rebecca (Nichole Galicia) about being stuck in traffic on the bridge that leads to Mike learning about the bus. As he gets the details from Ian and Stevie (Derek Webster), Roman (Mark Ivanir) questions Iris about her phone call with Mike. She claims she was speaking to someone from home. They are abruptly interrupted by Konstantin, with the order to retrieve the car.

Sherrie Maxwell/Cherry (Natasha Marc) freaks out when Tracy questions her about the pregnancy. At first, Cherry jokes about Immaculate Conception, but when Tracy asks if it was a single guard or multiple, Cherry goes into a complete meltdown. Tracy leaves without answers.

By the time the bus is pulled from the water and opened by Ian and Keno (Derek Basco), Evelyn Foley (Necar Zadegan) is on-site with Mike. Konstantin, Roman, and Iris are also nearby but on the other side of the water. Although they could have remained unnoticed, Iris draws attention to them when she gets out of the vehicle and walks to the edge of the water for a closer look. The incident continues to nag at Iris until she nearly becomes despondent at one point.

Just as Mike orders Ian to write the incident off as an accident, he receives word from Carney (Lane Garrison) about Raphael’s attack. Being that nearly no one knows about the attack and Raphael is in solitary, Mike tells Carney to keep it that way as long as possible.

When the bus is finally moved offsite for closer examination Mike shows back up for another conversation with Ian. For Ian, the writing is on the wall that Bunny is responsible, and the reports from the drug squad about Bunny going off-radar only make him guiltier. Despite all that, Mike maintains the belief that Bunny wouldn’t kill innocents.

Tracy experiences CO Breen’s violent side when he confronts her in the parking lot about speaking with Cherry. Across town, Mike follows Bunny from Rhonda’s (Nona Parker Johnson) funeral back to his warehouse. Their brief confrontation doesn’t begin well and only gets worse when Mike asks him about the bus incident. Bunny is obviously insulted but won’t tell Mike that he isn’t responsible. Instead, he tells Mike that they go their separate ways.

Mike ends back up at the bar from the opening scene but this time he is briefly joined by Ian. Ian is nearly as distraught as Iris about the girls and recently learning that they were all underage and holding hands as they died is stepping over the line. Before leaving him to stew, Mike ironically says there never was a line. That was just something they imagined up to give themselves hope.

After leaving the bar, Mike immediately places a call to Carney to order him to a phone to Raphael. Carney claims he can’t do it but it’s clear that Mike isn’t giving him an option. Elsewhere, Iris tells Konstantin that she has to go. After a bit of mumbling and talk about banishing her, it becomes clear that he is hallucinating.

While out celebrating with his new team, Kyle notices Evelyn at the bar. There is a bit of jovial joking before she asks him if KPD has any leads. This is when he tells her about moving to SWAT. Being that he is working under Robert, this immediately turns the conversation heated. Although she begins ranting about Robert, Kyle chooses not to engage and simply walks away.

After getting the phone from Carney, Raphael briefly speaks with Bunny. Raphael not only tells him that Merle Callahan (Richard Brake) is responsible for their problems, but he assures Bunny that he will go to war for him if he gets Roe (Mystie Smith) and Trey (Brandon Faison) out of Kingstown. Bunny gives him his word.

 

Mayor Of Kingstown Review

I must say this was easily one of the better episodes of the season. I realize I’ve said this several times, but that only means the show is getting better and better. Although I am pretty sure Mike is covertly or will eventually cook something up with Bunny, the prospect of a different antagonist is intriguing. At this point, the prospect of a slightly different storyline would be intriguing. Despite Kyle and Tracy’s new roles, I am certainly not a fan of either. Konstantin’s tyrannical ranting, although enjoyable at times, is becoming a bit played out. In lieu of the negativity, I would still have to earnestly say the episode deserves a 6 out of 10.
