The episode begins with Amandine Buckingham (Melia Kreiling) waking up in bed with Jack Elliot (Henry Lloyd-Hughes).

Amandine tells Jack that she wants him to have her favorite book, “Moby Dick” for his birthday. He assures her that he’ll treasure it.

7 Years Earlier – Chef Lucien Clark (Gordon Kennedy) orders Chef Kerry (Melissa Phillips) to get his carpet shell claims before telling Jamie Buckingham (James Corden) his dish is good but needs saffron. A mishap results in Jamie being covered in food. Jamie says it was his fault. Clark demands he get it cleaned up before calling him a “Dozy arsehole.” Jamie says he’s a “dozy arsehole.” Clark assures him that the 30 quid will be deducted from his wages.

Guest 2 (Sarah Sayuri Hare) asks where she met Jack. Amandine says at work before rolling her eyes at Jack and a guest’s boisterous laughing.

Jamie tells Kerry that he doesn’t understand what’s wrong with him. Kerry suggests he needs sleep.

Amandine finds her “Moby Dick” damaged underneath a table on the deck. When the elevator door opens, she finds herself face-to-face with Jamie. On the ride down, Jamie passes gas. She tells him that she’ll take the blame if anyone else gets on the elevator. After several apologies, she asks if he’d like to have a drive with her. He sarcastically says he’ll quietly slip overboard if she agrees. She suggests he needs a drink first.

Jamie admits to being nervous about talking to her because Lucien prohibits it. She informs him that her fiancé, Jack is Lucien’s employer. He tells her that she likes shellfish, warm bread, and black coffee. She asks how he did it. He admits to memorizing it from a laminated guest record. She suggests it’s laminated so he can masturbate to her before asking what’s his dream. He tells her that he wants to have his own restaurant. She asks if he’s good enough. He claims to have spent several weeks curing his sea sickness when Lucien hired him. They briefly discuss “Moby Dick.” She asks what will the name of his restaurant be when a whale makes a massive splash in the water. Jack approaches as they share their excitement. She rushes him off to bed before Jamie can explain about the whale.

Lucien tells Jamie that he’s fired for coming onto Amandine. After assuring him that it didn’t happen like that, Jamie asks why is it necessary for him to shout all the time. They continue to argue until Lucien head-butts him.

Jamie gives Amandine his number in front of Jack and his guests before leaving for home. When he climbs into bed, Gail (Jessica Paul) says, “Welcome home.”

Jamie tells Jeff Wilson (Colin Morgan) that a whale came out of the water and looked at him and Amandine. Jeff reminds him of whales being mammals before suggesting he’s going to dump Gail for Amandine who’s engaged to a billionaire. Jamie admits to receiving a text from Amandine who wants to meet tomorrow at the Connaught Hotel. After Jamie says he loves Gail, Jeff tells him to send Amandine a text to say he has the flu.

The Connaught concierge (Sarah Auber) informs Jamie that Amandine wants to see him in her suite. While playing Scrabble, Amandine asks why Lucien fired him. Jamie tells her that he broke the rules. She informs him that Jack’s father is the owner of the Connaught Hotel. He asks what she wanted to ask him. She asks if he believes in signs. After saying whales must surface to breathe, he tells her that he’s going home to the woman he loves. She asks if he’s going to ignore the sign before arranging the Scrabble pieces to read, “I call from the deep sea, follow me.” He watches as she lifts her dress above her head.

Dropping a thong in Jack’s lap, Amandine asks who it belongs to. When he suggests it belongs to the cleaner, she hits him. He assures her that it was a mistake. After putting on the thong, she informs him that she’s meeting a man in 30 minutes.

Taking a seat on a bench, Jamie questions his decision when Amandine approaches.

Jamie admits to knowing nothing about her. While pushing the merry-go-round, she asks how she likes her coffee. He says strong and black. She asks what does she love. He says shellfish and warm bread. Jumping aboard the merry-go-round, she informs him of her pregnancy as the episode comes to an end.

 

Mammals Synopsis

Amandine gifted her billionaire fiancé, Jack her favorite book, “Moby Dick.” He promised to treasure the book but instead, left it on the deck to get damaged.

After a chance meeting, Jamie and Amandine are on the deck when a whale lunged out of the water and looked at them. Jamie is later fired for breaking the rule that prohibits the crew from mingling with guests. He gave her his phone number before returning home to his girlfriend, Gail.

Jamie agreed to meet Amandine at a local hotel owned by Jack’s father. Another sign during a Scrabble game leads to a sexual interlude and the decision to leave Jack and Gail.

Amandine sprung her pregnancy on Jamie at the end of the episode.

 

Mammals Review

The episode provided a backstory of Jamie and Amandine’s relationship. It was refreshing to see the beginning of their relationship instead of her many affairs.

In the real world, not many people would walk away from a billionaire fiancé for an unemployed chef. It’s just a shame, their humble beginning will probably end in divorce. I was thinking, there may be more to the story than what we’ve seen so far.
