As the episode opens, Susie (Imogen King) visits Emma (Sally Lindsay) in jail. As Emma begins to explain what happened, Constable Christina Kyriacou (Louiza Patikas) summons her. Christina tells Emma that she has been charged with affray for threatening a bank clerk. Refuting the charge, Emma admits to being upset because Niko (Gerald Kyd) defrauded her. She says he claimed to have loved her and needed 225,000 euros until a banking error was corrected. Susie asks why give him the money when it was for the salon and their future. Emma pleads with Kyriacou to find him.

Maria (Joanna Kalafatis) tells Constable Christina that she has never heard of anyone named Niko. Emma says she is lying. Christina offers to drop the charge if she leaves Cyprus. When Emma refuses the offer, Christina reminds her that she willingly gave the money away. The hotel receptionist (Konstantinos Kavatiotis) refuses to let Emma and Susie stay at the hotel. Susie admits to feeling bad for Pete (Neil Morrissey) when Emma forced him to move out and the majority of the equity went to her. Emma argues that Pete’s debts would have absorbed most of the equity. Susie questions how she fell for a handsome millionaire being short of cash. Sonny calls to tell her that Milo may have chickenpox. Refusing to go home, Emma vows to get the money back by Friday before the salon deposit deadline. After renting a car, she follows Maria and Theo (George Parisis) in a commuter bus. She forces her way into their apartment and demands to know the truth.

Emma threatens to Maria’s co-workers that she is part of a fraud scheme. Maria says everyone believes Emma is a crazy drunk. Emma threatens to throw Theo’s tablet over the banister if she does not tell the truth. Maria assures Theo that Emma is a nice person and will not do it. Weeping, Emma tells her that the money was for Susie and Milo’s future. Maria says George (Ramon Tikaram) is at the Carob Tree almost daily but people like her never beat them. Later, Emma follows George from the restaurant to his residence. She calls Christina to tell her that she located George who pretended to be a real estate agent. Christina refuses to arrest him without evidence of coercion. Ending the call, Emma waits until George leaves to enter the house through an unlocked window. She locates a key to a locked compartment where she finds a photo of Niko and Annika Kristine Larsen’s passport. She snaps pictures of them as George returns home. He remembers her name.

George apologizes for what happened and claims Niko is affiliated with the mafia. He says the locals do what they ask of them. He admits to making some bad business decisions and is now owned by the mafia. He warns her against looking for Niko because she will not get her money back. He rides with her to the airport. When she goes inside Cyprus Rentals to return the car, he walks away. Emma receives a call from Pete asking her to come home. She says it is none of his business. He suggests she start taking antidepressants like before. She assures him that she is fine. A short time later, George watches her enter the airport before leaving in a taxi. She returns to Cyprus Rentals to pick up her rental car.

After renting a room at a nearby hotel, Emma finds Annika’s social media page with a photo of her and Freya Larsen (Camilla Roholm). She sends her a private message and looks closely at the photo to see Niko and Annika in front of the Careta Sunset Hotel. A short time later, she is speaking with Nicholas (Christos Yiangou) in reception. He tells her that Annika met Niko a week after her arrival and disappeared after a month. He says the hotel has her luggage. Emma claims Freya is a bit concerned about her. He escorts her to a storage room. While he attends to a guest, she searches through Annika’s belongings to find an address book. A Careta receptionist (Irene Salata) notifies someone of Emma’s visit and asks to be left alone before ending the call.

Emma calls Freya to see if she has heard from Annika. Freya claims to have last spoken to her several months ago. Emma tells her that she found Annika’s passport on the beach. Freya says she ran off with a guy. Emma promises to find her before ending the call. She receives a message supposedly from Annika saying Nika returned her money. She requests they meet at the Cape Greco picnic area but asks her to not tell anyone. In a voicemail, Emma tells Susie that she is not the only woman to fall for Niko’s scam and she needs evidence to convince the police to charge him. It is dark when she arrives at Cape Greco where she finds George. He threatens to shoot her. She tells him about Susie and Milo and warns that he will go to prison. He says she can join Annika when a bird shrieks loudly. She shoves him and races toward her car. He fires his gun. She falls and injures her leg but continues when she encounters Niko. He forces her into the back of his car and demands she be quiet or die. The episode ends.

 

Love Rat Review

Desperate to get her money back and the police unwilling to help, Emma executes her own vacation. She convinces Maria to tell her where to find George. She breaks into his house to find evidence of a recent victim, Annika who disappeared shortly after meeting Niko. George admits his affiliation with the mafia after his business dealings went sour. She tricks him into believing she is going home but instead visits the Careta Sunset Hotel where Annika previously stayed. Annika’s address book puts her in touch with Freya who last spoke to her several months prior.

A receptionist at the hotel alerts George of Emma’s visit. Believing she is meeting Annika, Emma visits Cape Greco where she finds George armed with a gun. He threatens to kill her but she manages to get away only to run into Niko. He forces her into the back of his car.

 

Susie’s visit to Cyprus feels a bit rash. The acting is hit-and-miss. The story is a bit farfetched but not unlikely. The episode deserves a 5.5. Get more Love Rat recaps here.
