At the beginning of the episode, Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) speaks with parents in the classroom. Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) arrives at the school and approaches Laura. They’re introduced before they begin speaking about Luke (Jamie Flatters). Andrew tells the teacher that tomorrow is the day that Luke’s mother died so he might be distracted. Their conversation continues as we jump over to the crime scene. The body is pulled from the mud by two police officers. A car nearby is surrounded by police tape while DI Karen Renton (Katherine Kelly) speaks with her colleague about the man’s wounds. There is a tiny chance that he killed himself.
Next, Laura leaves home with her boyfriend. They kiss and she says she didn’t know things would move along so quickly. She rushes off because she is nearly late for work. At the school, Laura is questioned by Karen Renton and another investigator. Karen offers Laura nicotine gum before they talk about Andrew and his death. Since his expensive watch got smashed and stopped at 6, Karen believes he died around that time. Karen tells Laura that she’ll be speaking with everyone she knows. Laura asks if she is under suspension and she says Andrew hurt a lot of people. Laura explains she doesn’t know how Andrew died and she doesn’t care. Then, we jump back three weeks and Andrew gets a call finding out that Laura is searching through his belongings.
Luke enters the room and checks on his father. Andrew says there has been an emergency at the hospital so that gives him an excuse to leave. Andrew grabs a bag full of items before chatting with his son briefly. He leaves home after that. Carl Peterson (Howard Charles) is awoken by his friend. He sees a television report about Andrew’s murder. DI Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn) and others watch the same report. Vanessa speaks with her friend about his death. Karen speaks with a colleague about her taking on the case. He is surprised it wasn’t someone local but she is not since she is really good. She wants to work with him because he knows the people and the area. He doesn’t want to so she threatens to call his boss and make it happen anyway.
DS Rory Maxwell (Danny Webb) sits down with her seconds later. They chat about Andrew’s vehicle and they look at pictures of Laura’s boyfriend. Meanwhile, Laura walks past Andrew’s vehicle and notices the police presence all around. She gets a call from Liam (Richie Campbell) who just heard the news. Liam asks about Katy but Laura hasn’t heard from her either. Laura visits Katy (Zoe Tapper) at home and is invited inside. She is asked about not picking up the kids and Katy admits she forgot. She says Liam doesn’t have to worry about her before their conversation turns to Andrew. Then, we jump back three weeks again. Luke is visited by police officers while Andrew speaks with Barry on the phone. Andrew is told to get plastic surgery done in LA.
The call ends and Andrew hides his name tag under a barrel. Luke is interviewed by police. He is pressured until he admits that his father wasn’t with him on the night in question. He says she doesn’t know where his father was. Andrew gets into a boat and looks through his things while Luke cries. Police arrive at the pier and Andrew believes he is busted but they storm a different boat. Andrew calls a friend, Oliver. Andrew wants his friend to do something for him. While he doesn’t want to do it, Andrew convinces him to do so. After that, Ian Davis (Kieran Bew) is visited by Karen and Rory. They go to a private room and Ian is asked his relationship with Laura.
Karen makes sure to ask Ian if he wants some nicotine gum before the questioning continues. Ian reminds them that he never met Andrew. He is asked about someone he beat up 9 years ago. Then, he is questioned about two days ago. Ian is adamant that he had nothing to do with Andrew and he tells investigators they’re looking in the wrong direction. Vanessa calls Rory and tells him something about Andrew. Karen is wearing a leather biker jacket. When she shows up at Laura’s house moments later, she is wearing something else. They’ve got a warrant to search Laura’s place. Laura is told about Vanessa telling them what happened at the boathouse.
Laura goes outside and calls Vanessa to complain while her house is searched. During the search, investigators find Andrew’s key. Carl’s girlfriend brings him food on her break. She says it wasn’t their fault and that he made her believe it was a drunken mistake. When she leaves, Carl cleans a boat and finds blood inside. He wipes it away quickly. Laura is asked about the key. She is taken down to the station. Oliver arrives at the boat dock and gets Andrew’s name tag. He speaks with Andrew while arriving at the hospital and going to Andrew’s locker. He gets a bunch of money and other items but drops something on the ground. A woman enters and gets the item while Oliver hides. A man enters and chats with the woman before they leave together.
Oliver escapes while a 16-year-old man is rushed into medical. The boy threw himself off of the pier. After that, Laura is questioned by Rory and Karen. She claims someone broke into her home and hid the key there. She blames the police since they didn’t give her proper protection. She admits she was scared because Andrew wanted to win at any cost. Karen arrests her for the murder and that surprised Rory. She empties her pockets before she is booked into the jail. Rory says they should’ve discussed it first since they have a lot of people to talk to. Karen believes they’ve made the right decision though. Laura calls Liam and tells him about her arrest.
He says it has been a while since he practiced but everything will be okay. Liam explains they can only hold her for so long. Then, they’ll have to charge her or let her go. He says it could’ve been anyone since Andrew had so many enemies and he is convinced Laura is strong enough to get through it. Luke is shown in the hospital and Carl at home while Laura speaks about Andrew hurting so many people. We jump back and see Andrew and Laura chatting at the school. He tells Laura that Luke is like him since he has to win. He leaves and the episode ends.
Liar Review
The last season of Liar was okay in the beginning but it went downhill very quickly there in the end. I was surprised when they announced they were going to make another season but I thought I’d give it a chance anyway. I have to say that I am not impressed at all and think they should’ve canceled the show. As soon as the Karen Renton character was introduced, you could tell that this season is going to be really bad.
The character is obnoxious just like Katherine Kelly’s character in Cheat. I think I’ll try to avoid anything she is in from now on. It might not be the actress but the character is overly cringy. She is smacking her nicotine gum, offering it to everyone, and taking over the whole show. While the episode was mainly dull, the Karen character brought it down significantly. I am not sure I am stomach it much longer. Please get her off of this show. I can’t be the only one that wanted to throw the remote through the screen because of her snugness.
There is literally nothing likable about her or her cheesy wardrobe changing every other scene. The opening episode was dismal at best. It scores a 5.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Liar are available on Reel Mockery.
