Toby And Lindsey Are Here – Episode 7 opens with AJ (Zosia Mamet) and Richie Diane (Michael Angarano) rallying around Brad (Ryan Pinkston), much to Ruby Yao’s (Stephanie Hsu) frustration. The way he tells things, he paints Ruby as the ad guy. The longer this goes on, the more frustrated she becomes. She’s also quick to remind everyone that Brad has killed 18 people. It isn’t long after Ruby learns that Brad didn’t cast the hex that Isaac (Tommy Martinez) shows up.
Isaac accuses Ruby of ignoring him, which leads to her sharing her sex timeline with him. When she tries to convince him that what Merci (Olivia Holt) told him is true, he appears unbelieving. After Ruby reveals everything, he accuses her of making up wild stories just to get rid of him. Isaac ends up storming off and leaving Brad, Ruby, AJ, and Richie to themselves.
With Isaac gone, Ruby, Brad, and AJ trace the hex back to the night they hosted McKenzie’s Sweet 16 Party. From there, Brad tracks the night to a few street vendors and eventually to another bar. It was at the last bar that he met the Raven-haired lady who supposedly put the hex on Ruby. Although that is all Brad can remember about the spell caster, AJ tracks her down in a matter of seconds.
Janelle is right in the middle of a heated business meeting when her assistant alerts her that Toby and Lindsey are at the front desk. Janelle is stunned when she arrives outside to find Brad, Ruby, and AJ waiting on her. There is only a moment of confusion before AJ explains everything. Much to everyone’s surprise, Janelle doesn’t even attempt to deny that it was her who cast the spell. In fact, she claims she remembers the very night crystal clear because it was the worst night of her life.
Although Janelle is more than willing to share the long version, Ruby makes sure that doesn’t happen. In the grand scheme of things, Janelle is from a long line of people who can manipulate the dark arts. Being that Janelle is a successful Cinnabon executive, she’d gotten out of the practice. It was only a fight with her friend, Toby that caused her to relapse that night. Despite all this, the hex is irreversible. It can, however, be transferred. Janelle only gets as far as telling Ruby how to transfer the hex before he is called to deal with an emergency in consumer products.
Despite the good news about the hex, AJ is nowhere as near as happy as Ruby. In fact, from the ensuing conversation, it also seems as if AJ wants Ruby to keep the curse. Ruby seems to think that she can pass the curse off to someone who won’t hurt anyone else, such as a virgin or someone on death row. AJ isn’t so sure about Ruby’s claim and thinks that Ruby only wants to get rid of the curse to better herself. The dispute doesn’t get much further because AJ practically storms off and Brad follows.
Zack Bridgerton (Andre Hyland) turns to his new online community of followers for advice to win AJ back. He somehow interprets their advice as hiring a chef to go over to AJ’s place and cook her authentic Mexican. Ruby is moping at Richie’s apartment while watching old Billy Crystal movies. By the time Richie returns from his not-so-successful first day, Ruby has talked herself into keeping the hex. Despite what he has been saying all along, Richie tries to convince Ruby that she isn’t a bad person. It takes some work but Richie eventually manages to convince her that despite her annoying habits, some man will someday love her for everything she has to offer.
Before Ruby can realize that Richie is talking about himself falling for her, Isaac shows up at the door. Not only does Isaac tell Ruby that he believes her but he practically tells her that he doesn’t care if being with her means dying, he wants to be with her.
Even Richie can’t help but admit that Isaac delivered the perfect romantic speech that Ruby has been waiting to hear. Ruby agrees and the episode ends with her choosing between Isaac and Richie.
Laid Review
Another great episode, with a near-perfect ending going into the finale. I have never been one for sappy love movies, melodramas, or even happy endings but this series has transformed me. By the finale, I’m so invested that I’ve even considered going back and watching the old series. I, myself, am rooting for Richie but I wouldn’t be too upset to see Ruby end up with Isaac. Either way, she’s going to get a decent guy and that’s what she’s been after all along. It also appears that AJ is right on the verge of forgiving Zack, so there is a happy ending expected there as well. I’d give the episode a 6.1 out of 10 and I am really looking to see how this thing wraps up.
