Episode 6 – The episode opens with Eamon Cunningham (Ciaran Hinds) asking his supplier’s son, Cenk Batuk (Bamshad Abedi-Amin), for a two-week extension. Cenk gives him the extension but says there it will come with a fee that will later be determined by his father. When the meet ends, Con Doyle (Keith McErlean) arrives to alert him of the arrival of the cars. After learning there have been no new developments on Amanda Kinsella (Clare Dunne) or the drugs, Eamon tells him he expects some answers when he returns tomorrow.
Jimmy Kinsella (Charlie Cox) loses his patience when Amanda asks if Dotser Reid (Neill Fleming) could be sharing information with Eamon. He harshly reminds her that Frank Kinsella (Aidan Gillen) runs the family and has operations structured specifically so no one outside the family knows enough to rat. He tells her that her role is with the dealership. Michael Kinsella (Charlie Cox), who has been present during the argument, receives a call from Anna Areoye (Hannah Adeogun), asking if he’s still interested in meeting.
When Eamon arrives to pick up his ex-wife for some outing, he immediately becomes upset about the pitiful state of the garden. He learns later from Jane Cunningham (Slaney Power) that the gardener retired last year. Once Angela Cunningham (Fiona Bell) arrives, he offers her the chance to back out, but she appears deadset. She does express her displeasure with the size of his security before they leave.
While sharing a joint on their patio, Bridget “Birdy”Goggins (Maria Doyle Kennedy) attempts to convince Frank that Eric “Viking” Kinsella (Sam Keeley) is hot-headed but has indeed learned his lesson. Frank says he’s a liability and reminds her that he’s responsible for Jamie Kinsella’s (Cian Fitzsimons) shooting as well as the mess with Eamon. Once he points out that the police have enough irrefutable evidence to lock him away, she accuses him of not fighting hard enough and it wrong for a father to give up on a son.
Amanda visits Nikita “Nikki” Murphy (Yasmin Seky) and Kem (Isaac “Kem” Kemela to make the weekly cash pickup. While Nikki goes inside to arrange the payment, Kem keeps Amanda company outside and apparently says too much about Frank’s hoarding product. She becomes suspicious as he continues to pry for information about Frank storing product elsewhere. Once Nikki returns, Amanda offers to set Kem up with a new car if he’ll follow her home.
En route to their destination, Angela voices her concerns about leaving the girls with a burden. She admits to finding several assets in her name while snooping through the finances. Although he offers to gift them to her, she says she wants them out of her name. He agrees and she asks if he has a “question” prepared for when they arrive. He claims he isn’t interested in participating. Upon arriving at their destination, she gives him the ultimatum to get rid of his security or leave with them. Just as he approaches Con to order him home, he is informed that Glen Wright (Ben Carolan) has reported Anna is on the move.
Meanwhile, Michael meets with Anna, buys her a slice of cake, and gives her the Bluetooth speaker that she can pair with her phone. She claims she would like to see more of him once he mentions his solicitor fighting for “official” visits.
Amanda returns home with Kem and suggests they speak outside while Jimmy watches the soccer game in the main room. With the paperwork out of the way, she accuses him of being a rat. He assures her he isn’t a rat and tells her to keep the car. She blocks him from leaving and intimidates him with the threat of Jimmy and Michael until he admits providing Con with Francis “Fudge” Flynn’s (Thommas Kane’s Byrne) location. She becomes hysterical when she learns that Eamon is tracking Anna and has a million-dollar bounty for any Kinsella.
Michael is sharing a pleasant childhood memory with Anna when she receives a call from her Nan, ordering her home. They say goodbye and promise to schedule another meeting next week just as he receives Amanda’s frantic text. He receives the message just in time to stop Anna and whisk her away to the back of the restaurant where they barricade themselves in a supply closet. Two masked shooters spend several minutes intimidating customers and looking for Michael but have to leave empty-handed when they get word of approaching officers. In the supply closet, Michael has another episode but uses Anna to talk himself down.
A call from Cenk informs Eamon that he’s going to be charged 100 grand for each additional day the payment is late. He doesn’t get very long to dispute the trumped-up charges before Angela arrives to tell him that the ceremony is about to begin.
The restaurant is now full of local cops and Anna is already safely on her way home when Amanda arrives to collect Michael. In the vehicle, she reveals that Kem is a rat and why she suspected a rat in the first place. Instead of being grateful, Michael surprises her by getting upset, claiming that she should have shared the news earlier. She surprises him when she says she didn’t share her discovery with Frank or Jimmy. Returning to Frank’s house, Michael chooses not to share the information either. As he and Jimmy go off to plan for retaliation, Frank asks to speak with Amanda. Along with Eric and Birdy, Frank shares the news that he’s changed his mind about handing Eric over to the authorities. An argument ensues as she tries to point out what a mistake that is.
Jimmy tries to discuss retaliation with Michael but he says it’ll be better for him to decide what to do when he’s not angry. Angela and Eamon meet with Rhiannon (Ruth McGill) and begin an ayahuasca ceremony. Eamon appears apprehensive until Angela recommends he just let go and claims she didn’t choose the ceremony solely for herself. Frank is shown setting a meeting with Georgeam (Aymsolan Scuffins) while Eamon stumbles outside and retches. He’s soon overcome with the vivid memory of how his mother died while saving him from drowning.
Much later that night, Michael has trouble sleeping and reaches out to Anna only to discover that her phone has been disconnected. Dotser escorts Frank to his meeting with Georgeam and is shot in the head when he insists on sweeping the area before Frank gets out of the car. While doing bumps of cocaine, Frank watches his man get shot down before the shooter turns the weapon on Frank and fires. Although it appears Frank takes a bullet in the shoulder or chest, he manages to get away in the vehicle. After driving just a short distance, he is ordered off the road by officers standing outside their car. As he explains what’s going on, several other cars with sirens blaring and flashing lights race by. Amanda is shown watching from the upstairs of her house when Jimmy joins and asks what’s going on. She says she imagines Viking is being arrested.
The next morning, she visits the dealership early to post a “closed until further notice” sign on the front door. Just as she is doing so, Detective Liz Cullen (Esosa Ighodaro) and backup arrive to serve a warrant. The episode ends with Eamon sitting alone on a beach, staring into the water.
KIN Review
Not a horrible episode at all, although I do not like the direction the things are going with Amanda. I also didn’t appreciate the sway that Birdy had with Frank, although that scenario was much more believable than Amanda’s. I am by no means a misogynist and believe in equal rights for any man, woman, or beast that earns their place, but something about Amanda’s power plays in the episode just didn’t sit right with me. I can admit she probably saved the family and she’s a good actress, but wish there was another angle. Other than that, I can’t complain much and would give the episode a very high 5.5 out of 10.
The episode deserves a 5.8. Get more Kin recaps here. Support our independent site by donating to Reel Mockery. Our onsite advertising can be combined with other techniques to build online awareness, reach our staff here. Join our newly established forum to discuss the latest releases.
