This week’s Golden Globes will likely be the lowest-rated awards show since it began airing on NBC in 1996. Last year’s Golden Globes, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais for the millionth time, currently holds the embarrassing record. The try-hard comedy duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler gave Gervais a run for his money after hosting the annual ceremony for the fourth time and by all accounts, it was just as bad as the numbers portray.
Although many read about it later, the night was great for the Royals, the British, and chess. Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of American activist Fred Hampton. Olivia Colman was thrilled to see her castmate Emma Corrin take home the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series award.
The most memorable event of the night was British actor Josh O’Connor’s authentic speech after winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series for his portrayal of Prince Charles in the hit television show The Crown. O’Connor has finally entered the international spotlight after playing roles in Peaky Blinders, Ripper Street, and The Durrells in Corfu.
The boyish nervous energy displayed in his acceptance speech truly made the actor relatable and added credence to his push to focus on mental health during the ongoing pandemic. While others in Hollywood stayed true to their eccentric style of politics, the British actor spoke up for the average Joe and Jane who’ve been hit hardest by the pandemic, including those who’ve now been laid off for more than a year as well as those poor souls suffering alone in isolation.
For the little men and women of the world, the value of work is undeniable. Although the governments of the world can temporarily supplement the wages lost due to forced shutdowns, they cannot replace the pride of earning a living and serving an important role in one’s community.
Although his words were mostly overshadowed by outlandish dresses, a sleepy Al Pacino, a tie-dye hoodie, and a mostly dull affair, O’Connor has proven himself to be in touch with the fans, and that in itself deserves recognition.
