At the start of the episode, Henry Sharrow (Max Beesley) checks on the baby. They end up waking up Winganuske (Rachel Colwell). Sir George Yeardley (Jason Flemyng) finds Meredith (Dean Lennox Kelly) near Farlow’s severed head. Meredith leaves. George sees an Indian in the distance. It is Silas (Stuart Martin). After the intro, Yeardley explains that they’re no longer getting black slaves. Instead, they’ve rounded up young kids to send to Jamestown. They discover that Farlow’s head has gone missing. Redwick (Steven Waddington) immediately blames Meredith. They agree to leave the spike in place until the head is found. A young boy gets off of the ship and flirts with Verity (Niamh Walsh). He wants ale.

She gives him water instead. Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick) speaks with James Read (Matt Stokoe). She wonders why James hasn’t tried to get risk. He explains that he wishes to keep his honor. James tells Jocelyn that her schemes are justified, but very dangerous. Chacrow (Kalani Queypo) and Winganuske try to convince Henry to let the Pamunkey raise the baby. Henry refuses. He wants the baby raised English. Jocelyn returns to the farm and speaks with Mercy (Patsy Ferran). She learns about the new boy, Tamlin Appleday. He works harder than the others, but he is somewhat of a troublemaker. Jocelyn is forced to punish him for disobedience almost immediately.

The baby’s fever returns. Henry’s wife wants to take the baby to the Pamunkey healer. Henry is confident that Dr. Christopher Priestley (Ben Starr) will be able to help. Young Tamlin gets into a fight with James Read. Verity is forced to stop James from hurting him. The baby is taken to Christopher’s clinic. Outside, Henry’s wife blames Crabtree. Henry chats with him and Crabtree agrees to leave. Meredith seems to be having hallucinations. The following day, Jocelyn becomes angered when she finds her workers playing in the water. Tamlin receives the blame and is banished from Jocelyn’s farm. Chacrow and Silas watch the young Pamunkey boys attempt to become men. The ritual is slightly disturbing. Silas admits he wants revenge against the governor.

Henry decides to get help from the Pamunkey. Pepper (Luke Roskell) is sent to get the healer. Verity finds Tamlin cleaning the buckets outside of the bar. She decides to let them help. James and Redwick blame one another for the missing head. Crabtree interrupts. He wonders what Farlow did to deserve his death. He explains that luck has blessed him with two ugly features. That allows him to avoid friendships and such. Crabtree urges James to help him with his new business. He speaks about Jocelyn. He tells Read that he will work his magic on her. Christopher admits that the naturals have medicines that might help Virginia. Meredith convinces himself that Tamlin is his son. The boy goes along with it. He begins telling everyone that Tamlin is his son. The Pamunkey healer arrives.

Sadly, it is too late. Henry’s boy has passed away. Henry is devastated. Meredith teaches Tamlin how to brew his own alcohol. After the governor rejects Jocelyn’s advice, she decides to go ahead with him. She takes the Pamunkey boys and agrees to use them on her farm. She believes she can teach them magical things. Meredith goes on and on about his son. James tells Verity that the boy stole a knife from his store. She tries to protect him. She wants Meredith to remain happy like he is now. Crabtree works his magic on Jocelyn. He shows her his mirror. He believes it will be hers even if she doesn’t buy it. Chacrow wants the baby buried on Pamunkey land. Henry refuses. Henry confronts Christopher. He no longer trusts him. Christopher admits he failed by not telling Henry the truth. He didn’t want to let him down after Henry put his faith in him.

Henry gives Meredith a dose of reality. He tells him that his boy is dead. Meredith becomes angry at Tamlin. He drinks and kicks the boy out of the bar. Henry lets the Pamunkey handle the burial ritual. Verity apologizes to Tamlin. She still wants him to live with them. He unleashes the knife and cuts her on the hand before running away. James Read meets with her at the church. She explains that Tamlin is just like her. They pray together even though Verity doesn’t believe in god. The stake is removed and returns to Read’s store. Jocelyn finds out that someone bought her the mirror. Read tells Jocelyn that he is onto Crabtree. He sneaked into the governor’s house when Farlow was killed. Read says that the governor took the head himself. Temperance finds Farlow’s head in their home. Tamlin helps clean up the pub. Henry’s baby is buried.

 

Jamestown Review

The opener wasn’t very good. This episode made it up for it in a big, big way. In fact, this was probably one of the best episodes of Jamestown in a very long time. It was eventful, exciting, and a little sad. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I thought the show might’ve jumped the shark after the last episode. That wasn’t the case. Now, I can’t wait to watch the rest of the season! This episode was fantastic. It deserves a solid 8 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Jamestown before you go.
