As the episode begins, the wedding between Henry Sharrow (Max Beesley) and Winganuske (Rachel Colwell) takes place. Back in Jamestown, Temperance (Claire Cox) tells George (Jason Flemyng) she believes that they’ve forsaken their religion. George explains that Sharrow will make Christian vows. Redwick (Steven Waddington) doesn’t like the idea of diluting the English bloodline. Henry returns with his new wife seconds later. Christopher (Ben Starr) and Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick) chat about the marriage as well. Christopher admits he will not let Jocelyn hide from the possibility of marriage. That night, Winganuske does her best to get Henry into the sack. The following day, James Read (Matt Stokoe) prepares to meet his new wife Corinna. Verity (Niamh Walsh) and Meredith (Dean Lennox Kelly) help him prepare.

They give him clothing taken from the stolen chest. Outside, James runs into an overly excited Mercy (Patsy Ferran). We also see that Jocelyn has dressed up for the occasion. Redwick and George thank the Sharrows for the marriage. They believe that Henry’s marriage can be used to their advantage. Henry doesn’t seem eager to betray Chacrow and the Pamunkey. Pedro (Abubakar Salim) gives Maria (Abiola Ogunbiyi) bangles he received from James Read. He explains that they represent her family. Maria shows no interest in wearing them. James Read arrives with a body on a stretcher. It seems that Corinna has died during the voyage. He takes the body to the church and gives the girl a kiss on the forehead. Meanwhile, George puts more pressure on Jocelyn to confirm that the doctor is the spy.

Redwick questions Read about the coat. George gets involved. James refuses to take it off. For the time being, Jocelyn convinces George not to punish James. That night, Jocelyn visits James. He explains that he is going to wear the coat for Corinna. He speaks about his grief. Jocelyn takes him to the barn and they apparently sleep together. In the morning, Redwick notices Jocelyn alone in the barn. Then, Verity and Mercy wake her up. Verity and Meredith try to convince James to remove the doublet. Again, he refuses. Edgar (Tony Pitts) asks about it. He wants to know how James got the doublet. Meredith and Verity help conceal its true origins. Meanwhile, Winganuske becomes bossy with Alice (Sophie Rundle) and the others. Pedro tells Temperance about Maria’s bangles. We see that Maria is wearing them proudly now.

Alice tries to work with Winganuske, but things do not go well. Jocelyn speaks with James about the previous night. She encourages him to forget about it, but he admits that he cannot. Chacrow (Kalani Queypo) and the other Pamunkey get under Henry’s skin by calling him Leaping Henry. Jocelyn visits George. She explains that they should give the Indians items on loan. When they cannot afford to pay, the Indians will be in trouble. Henry visits Redwick and agrees to help the Governor. Silas (Stuart Martin) watches their conversation from a distance. Later that night, Meredith encourages Meredith to go back and retrieve the chest. When they do, they’re stopped by Edgar. He takes the chest for himself. Redwick takes a bunch of items to the Pamunkey. He explains their new arrangement. Silas speaks with Chacrow alone and tells him that it is a trap.

Pedro asks George when he will be set free. George refuses to give a definite answer. Jocelyn pleads with Read to take off the doublet. He eventually agrees, but it is too late. James is lashed. During the lashing, the red doublet goes missing. Chacrow takes several Pamunkey to George. He explains that they’ll work in the fields every day for one year to ensure the Pamunkey have no debts. George isn’t happy. He complains to his men and suggests they’ve been betrayed. Christopher mends Read’s back. Read asks Christopher whether he intends to marry Jocelyn. Christopher doesn’t give an answer. George pressures Jocelyn to visit Christopher at night. Mercy is awaken when Jocelyn learns the house. She follows and watches her enter Christopher’s shop. She sits and speaks with James Read. Read explains that he is grieving love and isn’t sure that he will ever experience it again. That is why he never removed the doublet. He thought the feeling would be gone, if it was removed.

Christopher tells Jocelyn why he came to Jamestown. He eventually gives her a kiss. In the morning, Meredith buries the doublet in the woods. Silas tells Henry that he told Chacrow the truth. They begin to fight. Eventually, Silas gets the advantage. Silas reminds Henry that the Pamunkey saved his live. Mercy tells Jocelyn about her conversation with James Read.

 

Jamestown Review

This was undoubtedly the best episode of Jamestown this season. The episode had everything. It had a little humor, thanks to Chacrow and Mercy. It also had plenty of romance with Jocelyn playing two men at once. Of course, it was James Read who stole the spotlight. Read has become one of the best characters in the series. It will be interesting to see how his relationship with Jocelyn plays out. His stubbornness may get him into big trouble in the future though. Only time will tell.
