As the 2nd episode begins, Meredith Rutter (Dean Lennox Kelly) wakes up nude outside. Verity (Niamh Walsh) watches as he manages to get up and help himself inside. In the morning, Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick) and Mercy (Patsy Ferran) move back into their old home. Redwick (Steven Waddington) and Farlow (Burn Gorman) watch from a distance. Pedro (Abubakar Salim) is released from his chains. Pedro tries to convince Massinger to sell him to the governor. Massinger (Tony Pitts) orders James Read (Matt Stokoe) to lock him back up again. Pedro tells Read to convince Jocelyn to help him. The ships bring more goods. Verity admires the clothing. Meredith insists that he will show his wife what type of man he is. Jocelyn speaks with George Yeardley (Jason Flemyng) about Christopher (Ben Starr). Both agree that he could very well be the spy.
Alice (Sophie Rundle) overhears what type of punishment a traitor would receive. She becomes concerned for Silas (Stuart Martin). Jocelyn is told to get close to the doctor and determine whether or not he is the spy. Alice sits the baby down and walks off in a stupor. Temperance (Claire Cox) watches as James Read gets the baby and gives it back to Alice. Read manages to keep Alice’s secret from Temperance. James tells her to say nothing or all hell will open up. Meanwhile, Chacrow (Kalani Queypo) reminds Silas that he owes him. He insists that Silas needs to repay the favor. That night, Verity watches as her husband parties. Meredith seems to be plotting something. Meanwhile, Redwick learns that Farlow has debts back in England. Redwick tells him that he is making himself weak.
Meredith tells Verity that he intends to rob the Company’s ship. Silas is confronted by Alice. He promises that he is not a traitor. Henry (Max Beesley) interrupts their conversation. Henry tells Silas that they need to trade more, before the ships leave. The following day, Christopher and Jocelyn visit the location where Castell’s body was found. They spot Henry and Silas heading for the Indian camp. Christopher admits he believes that Castell was murdered. Temperance confronts Alice in town. She insists that Alice is protesting her innocence. Maria (Abiola Ogunbiyi) picks up the baby. Soon, Temperance tells her to put it down. She doesn’t listen. Meredith watches as two mariners remove a chest from a boat. Jocelyn visits Yeardley and tells him that she believes Christopher isn’t the spy. He tells her to wait until Christopher gives a name. Then, they will pounce.
Meredith meets with Carrow (Simon Meacock) and Morrow (Tomi May). He is allowed to take the chest. However, he is first beaten and told to stay quiet. James read meets with Jocelyn. He apologizes and encourages her to convince the governor to buy Pedro. He is slapped a few times. Read returns the poetry to Jocelyn. Meredith returns to Verity. He tells her that he was forced to fight off the mariners. He also shows her the merchandise. Henry and Silas try to trade with Openchancanough (Raoul Max Trujillo). It is clear that Chacrow has gotten to the king. They’re more hostile towards the Sharrow brothers. Redwick visits Verity and Meredith. He doesn’t get any helpful information from them. The Sharrow brothers leave. They agree to return later to look for pirates. Jocelyn speaks to Yeardley about Pedro. She does not succeed. Then, she speaks with Maria and learns her real name is Ghinga.
Redwick arrests two men from Massinger’s camp for theft. Jocelyn takes the poems before the council and pretends Pedro stole them. She forces the governor’s hand by pretending she wants Pedro to force the worst punishment. Yeardley eventually convinces Massinger to give him Pedro in exchange for two men. Pedro tells Maria that his plan is working. Yeardley tells Redwick that he sees Pardo as valuable, because the others look up to him. Verity sells some of the stolen goods. When Silas returns, he tells Alice that he would never betray his own people. That night, Meredith is forced to buy more stolen goods from his pirate friends. They agree to meet at the same place in the morning. Meredith is passed out in the morning, so Verity goes in his place. She watches as the men unload the cargo. Then, Henry and Silas arrive and chase the men.
Morrow takes Verity hostage. Henry distracts him, while Silas sneaks up and slices his arm with an axe. Then, Silas gives him several punches to the face. Back in Jamestown, Morrow is punished for his crime. Farlow pours molten lead down the man’s throat. Verity thanks Silas. Henry tells Silas that the only difference between them is that he knows he is a beast. Christopher tells Jocelyn that he is suspicious of Farlow. She also learns about his debts. Later, Pedro tells Yeardley about his desire to own his own farm one day. In return, Yeardley tells Pedro to get Maria in line. Meredith and Verity discuss their options. They agree not to go anywhere near the cargo. That night, Alice tells Silas that he did what he had to do.
Jocelyn visits Read. He thanks her for convincing Yeardley to take Pedro. They begin to kiss as the episode comes to an end.
Jamestown Review
This episode of Jamestown was better than the opener. Both have been good, but this was one better. It had more action and more humor. It was fun to watch Nicholas Farlow lose control and kill Morrow in a brutal way. Jocelyn has now gotten the governor back onto her good side. What are her intentions for James Read? Does she really like him for not being a wimp? Or is she interested in using him to elevate herself?
How is Silas going to deal with Chacrow? Who really killed Castell? This season is full of mysteries. So far, I am enjoying the second season. I’d give this episode a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Jamestown right now!
