ITV has announced that it has commissioned a new film covering the trial of 19-year-old Louise Woodward, a British au pair accused of the murder of 9-month-old baby Matthew Eappen. Authorities accused Woodward of shaking the baby to death when it was in her care while she was working in the United States.
The Trial of Louise Woodward (Working Title) will be produced by Voltage TV and will mark 25 years since Woodward’s 1997 trial. The court case was one of the highest-profile cases in the United States featuring a British defendant and was extensively covered by British and American media.
The film provides access to many of the case’s key figures including some who’ve never spoken since the trial has ended. The film will also examine whether improvements in medical science since the case could’ve changed the verdict. Some argued that Louise had violently shaken the baby in a “frustrated, unhappy and resentful rage”, but others believed the injuries were several months old.
The jury’s decision to condemn Woodward to 15 years for murder would be quickly downgraded to manslaughter by the presiding judge leaving many shocked and angered. Now, The Trial of Louise Woodward will give viewers the chance to relive and rethink the case.
