As this episode of Human Error begins, Holly O’Rourke (Leeanna Wilson) goes to the doctor and tells her she got a positive result on a pregnancy test. Although Luke (Matt Day) has wanted a baby for ages, this one isn’t his. Holly says the father is a friend. Gabe (Ethan Lwin) calls Holly and leaves a message saying it sounds like Sonia (Kate Angus) was having an affair. Keith Bird (Anthony J. Sharpe) goes to a Laundromat and closes it. Holly asks him how he’s going with the lead on the murder weapon. She tells him that Sonia Matthews may have been having an affair. Keith looks at a picture of the gunman to see if he recognizes anything about him. Holly suspects he’s had no formal weapons training or he shat himself.
Keith says her message made it sound like she was in trouble and he was in the middle of a job. He could’ve blown his cover. Keith has a lead on someone who may know where the gun came from. Holly says she really needs a name. Keith speaks to Camille (Debra Lawrance). He takes her outside and asks about the murder and her son getting a cheap gun. Camille argues her son has nothing to do with it. Keith wants to know who offered her son the gun. She eventually mentions Ricky Larson (Anthony Gray). Dylan McKenzie (Stephen Peacocke) meets Holly and tells her a baby is going to change things. Holly says they’re going to have to be discreet. He agrees to call him later. Gavin Butterfield (Rob Collins) interrupts to ask about last night’s aborted raid.
Holly briefly speaks to Jarred Pines (Rahel Romahn) who is busy boxing. She tells Gavin that she may have the name of the guy in possession of the murder weapon. Gavin says Ricky shot at them with a crossbow the last time they went to talk to him. They raid Ricky’s residence. Ricky is taken into custody without incident. Gabe calls Holly to say whoever Sonia was sexting was using a burner phone bought using a stolen credit card. That’ll make it more difficult to identify that individual. The police find multiple guns at Ricky’s place. He doesn’t want to tell Holly anything about those guns. Jarred says the gun used in the murder is the same caliber as the ones found. Ricky says the house is a share house so they can’t prove anything. Holly tells Jarred that she got Ricky’s name from an undercover in private. She wants to put him in a cell while Rose Starry (Katrina Milosevic) looks at the weapons.
At the station, Gabe tells Holly about the progress he’s made looking through the cell phone messages. She thanked someone for a tip and that person may be able to tell them who owns the burner phone. Holly speaks to Alice (Rosie Mitchell) briefly. Holly tells her father Bear (Steve Bisley) that she’s going to be home late. After the call, Alice complains to Bear that she never gets to see her parents. Holly goes to the pub with the others. Gabe tells her that the first number is identity protected by the police so they can’t identify the owner. Holly asks for the number so she can call it. Gabe tells her he has a date. When Holly calls the number, Gavin answers his phone. When she confronts him outside, Gavin says he met Sonia at the restaurant where she worked. She texted him. They went out once and that was it. Gavin claims she turned into a pest. He was at work and pulled a double shift at the time of the shooting.
Holly gets sick. Later, she returns to the office to continue working on the case. She asks Jarred to get Gabe to access CCTV footage from a club. Sonia went there with a drink with their new suspect. Holly wants to look for a locker and any personal items. She asks Jarred to do it from home because the suspect is a police officer. They hope she’s wrong about this. Gabe hangs out with a woman, Hannah, who mentions he shot himself in the foot. He believes that’ll be the end of him when work finds out. Gabe tells her that he identified the new suspect. He asks her not to tell anyone that it’s a cop. Luke greets Holly when she returns home. She receives a message from Dylan asking where she went but she doesn’t respond. Holly asks Luke about talking about having another kid. Luke argues they barely have time for Alice and they haven’t had sex much.
Luke thought she lost interest in him. Holly suggests seeing a counselor. At the station, Gabe shows Holly CCTV from the club after Sonia’s card was used there. They see Gavin being aggressive with her before being slapped. Holly tells Gabe to turn it off. Then, Holly confronts Gavin. He doesn’t want to answer questions. Gavin tells her she should be worried about telling her husband about the baby. Next, Jarred and Maia (Emily Joy) tell Holly they’ve found evidence suggesting Sonia had a stalker. Holly tells them about the video involving Gavin. They theorize that Gavin killed Sonia. Holly says they’re going to open a line on him, but they have to keep this very quiet. Rose arrives to say the guns found at Ricky’s place don’t match the murder weapon. They also didn’t provide any other evidence. However, two guns have similar serial numbers.
There is one missing and it could be the gun used to kill Sonia. Chief Kirsten Leigh (Daniela Farinacci) tells Holly that Gavin has filed a complaint against her for harassment. Holly tells her what she knows. She believes Gavin killed Sonia. Kirsten asks her to play it straight. Next, Maia calls Holly to say she found an internal complaint against Gavin. One of his classmates at the academy claimed he stalked her and put his hands around her throat at one point. Holly wants to see her. She curses Gavin who is standing nearby. Dylan asks Holly for a word. They talk about Luke and the baby. Holly says she could really use a friend right now. Dylan would love her to have the baby if she wanted to. Holly asks if he wears Shawn’s pink socks. Maia meets Holly to say Gavin’s former classmate won’t speak to them. Holly believes having Alice has made her a better detective.
She talks about the importance of standing up for Sonia. They visit Mike Simpson (Sachin Joab) to see if he can help. Mike reveals he found a pair of Sonia’s runners in the garbage one night. They had red paint on them and Sonia couldn’t explain where they had gone. Sonia said the lights in her car kept breaking. Keith messages Holly asking her to contact him. He meets her later. Holly knows Gavin is coming for her, but she doesn’t have anything on him. Keith says Gavin wasn’t on duty the day of Sonia’s shooting. Someone must’ve covered for him. Keith gives her an address for the place where Gavin stays when his wife keeps him out. The chick is from the siege where Gavin shot the husband in the face. Holly visits the woman in question and she claims Gavin saved her life. Caroline tells her what happened.
Holly talks to her about the possibility of Gavin being abusive. She asks if Gavin was with her last Friday. Holly tells her a little boy was in the back of the car when Sonia was murdered. Caroline says he’ll try to kill her if she tries to leave him. She says she’ll think about it before telling Holly to show herself out. Holly notices a vehicle behind her. Soon, it tries to run her off the road. It eventually drives away. Holly goes home to Luke. She tells him that she’s pregnant. Luke wants to know who the baby belongs to. Holly admits Dylan is the father of the baby. Luke asks if she’s going to run away with him now. Holly doubts he’s been celibate this whole time. Luke believes she’s burning the whole thing down. He ends up storming out. In the morning, Alice asks Holly why her dad left last night. Holly makes an excuse for him.
Alice reveals she called Bear so he can take her to school. She leaves when he arrives. Caroline (Amelie Mendoza) calls Holly to say she might have something about Gavin. Holly meets with Caroline who gives her Gavin’s secret phone. She explains he wanted her to get rid of it. Holly and Jarred visit Gavin at home to interview him about Sonia’s murder. They want to take him down to headquarters. Gavin says he has some info they might be interested in. They supposedly shot the wrong woman. Gavin eventually agrees to go with them, but he says he’s going to drive himself. Jarred tells Holly he’ll call Maia to get her to research other Sonia Matthews. Holly sees the car that tried to run her off the road last night. She tells Gavin that he has nice wheels.
Holly tells him they’ll follow him. As Gavin gets ready to drive away, his car explodes.
Human Error Review
The second episode of Human Error was interesting although it seems the story is taking the wrong turn here. The murder is receiving less attention as the personal lives of the characters receive the bulk of the spotlight. Much of the episode was about Holly, her pregnancy, and breaking the news to Luke.
Plus, Gabe supposedly shot himself in the foot and he’s just waiting for his bosses to find out. These stories are somewhat effective, but most viewers are going to be interested in the murder. The problem there is that this episode made the whole thing seem a bit unbelievable.
It is somewhat entertaining although the “true story” bits don’t ring true at this point. This probably could’ve been reduced to four episodes without missing anything important. At this stage, it’s clear that viewer expectations should be reduced.
With that being said, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes with Gavin dead. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10. Recaps of Human Error can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
