Hotel Cocaine Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

We’re At War – The episode begins with revealing that Roman Compte (Danny Pino) has moved his family in with Nestor Cabal (Yul Vazquez). Despite Roman’s constant assurances that the move is merely precautionary, Marisol (Tania Watson) remains apprehensive. Valeria (Corina Bradley), on the other hand, is treating the stay like a vacation and taking advantage of Nestor and Alejandra’s (Camila Valero) hospitality at every opportunity. All appears to be going well and Nestor even proposes making the move permanent, but this all quickly changes when Guillermo (Pedro Giunti) arrives with the news of Marty Owen’s (Robert Beck) death and millions of dollars of stolen product.

When Roman arrives at The Mutiny to find Agent Zulio (Michael Chiklis) waiting on him, it is suggested that the power dynamic of their relationship has greatly shifted. Roman not only returns the bug, but he tells Zulio he is done helping him and refuses his offers of protection. Zulio is practically begging him for information on Yolanda Garcia Guerra (Mayra Hermosillo). Burton Greenberg’s (Mark Feuerstein) meeting with a detective is the exact opposite as he finds himself suspect number one in the death of Constance Greenberg (Maggie Lacey).

Much to the displeasure of Marisol, Alejandra and Valeria are discussing the prospect of an after-prom party at the estate when a call from Andrew Landon comes in (Cale Ambrozic). Although it takes several subtle hints, the call ends with Valeria promising to look around Nestor’s house for coke.

Janice Nichols (Laura Gordon) encourages Roman to get out of Miami, but his brief acknowledgment of Jeronimo Rojas (Juan Felipe Samper) on the dance floor suggests he already has an alternative plan in the works. They are soon interrupted by Ray Dorado (Erniel Baez), who flirts with Janice. Despite Roman’s warnings about Ray, Janice appears to enjoy his attention.

When Burton accuses Ray of murdering Constance and vows to take him down, Roman approaches Jeronimo under the guise that he has the Mutiny membership card Yolanda requested. It takes a bit of negotiating, but Roman gets the address. After sharing the discovery with Nestor, they decide to verify it before making any rash decisions.

While Nestor, Guillermo, and Roman sit at the address, Gilberto ‘La Cobra’ Henao (Juan Pablo Raba) discusses his arrival in Miami with Yolanda. Everything appears to be in order except for protection when he arrives. After assuring him that Congressman Landon (Nick Barkla) and Ray have that covered, Yolanda raises her concerns about Jeronimo bringing unwanted attention to their operation. Gilberto practically tells her to suck up and she isn’t going to touch his cousin. At nearly the same time, thanks to Nestor’s impatience, Roman learns he was misled with the address.

After learning that Ray threatened Constance and Burton, she confronts him at the Mutiny where she urges him to come forward if he knows anything about Constance’s death. He practically tells her to mind her own business. Things aren’t going much better for Roman when he arrives at the club to discover that Zulio has been harassing some of the customers at the club for doing coke. Attempting to get Zulio off his back, Roman tells him to follow Jeronimo Rojas and he’ll lead him to Yolanda.

While Zulio and his team follow and raid Jeronimo, Valeria visits Andrew with the coke she stole from Nestor. Andrew is ecstatic with the purity of the coke and hints at Valeria getting more.

Breakfast doesn’t go so well for Roman the following morning. Initially, Valeria sarcastically jokes about Nestor being at his boatyard, and after that, Marisol confronts him about carrying a weapon and living in a drug dealer’s house. Alejandra’s sudden appearance plays in his favor this time.

Things don’t appear to be going any better for Gilberto when he shares the news of Jeronimo’s arrest with heads of the most powerful Colombian families. Their conversation suggests that they are starting to lose confidence in him and it couldn’t be happening at a more crucial time in their takeover. Although he ensures them that Yolanda knows how to handle the situation, he is ordered to go to Miami to clean things up.

Despite Zulio being praised with a major press conference for his arrest of Jeronimo, he doesn’t just feel like he hasn’t done nearly enough but he doesn’t want the attention. His girlfriend (Geraldine Zinat) tells him exactly what he needs to hear.

Yolanda meets with Jeronimo to give him a cyanide capsule. He practically laughs in her face until she tells him the revolting story about how the cartel responded to his friend, Christian when he was arrested and refused to follow their advice. She calmly walks away as he yells and curses at her.

Ray meets with Congressman Landon and not only makes a huge contribution to secure safe passage for Gilberto but he drops hints about Nestor not being around much longer. Burton receives a similar warning about Ray in the Alice in Wonderland Suite. While all that takes place, Roman meets with Yolanda at the Mutiny. Rather than make idle threats, she proposes an interesting business opportunity.

Later that day when Roman shares the news with Nestor, he considers the deal just because it will make Roman and his family safer. Roman, on the other hand, doesn’t see any safe way forward other than to eliminate Yolanda completely. As Guillermo and an associate prepare for the meeting with Yolanda, Valeria is sleuthing around the estate looking for coke and just happens to end up in the back of the van staged for the meeting.

The episode ends in a series of quick scenes. First Congressman Landon praises Dominic Zulio on his recent success. At the same time, Marisol happens to notice Valeria missing, Jeronimo choosing to take the cyanide, and Roman breaks off from Nestor’s regiment, en route to meet Yolanda, to set up a sniper post. As Zulio continues to rant about the impending drug war, Jeronimo dies and Roman now has his rifle trained on Yolanda. As Nestor and Yolanda shake hands, Valeria exits the van, and shooting the shooting starts. Nestor protects her.

Hotel Cocaine

What a stupid ending. I cannot believe the idiocy of Valeria. The episode already wasn’t the best, but I was enjoying it right up until the end. I mean, it was obvious that Nestor and Roman weren’t going to overcome their antagonist this earlier in the series, but the route chosen to prolong the war was plain silly. I get the whole Valeria and Andrew relationship, but all their scenes were just practically useless. Burton got even more annoying this episode. Unfortunately, I feel that the show might have taken a huge turning point in my eyes. It has never been great but this episode left an especially bad taste in my mouth. I’d give it a 4 out of 10.
