Obsessed – The episode begins with a woman finding a body on the beach.
Elsewhere Morgan Gilroy (Kaitlin Olson) and Tom (JD Pardo) go on their first breakfast date where they briefly discuss their next date before Morgan is called to a crime scene.
Morgan joins Detectives Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) and Lev ‘Oz’ Osman (Deniz Akdeniz) to learn about the unidentified late 20s female with blunt force trauma to the head. Despite all the talk of the time of death and blunt force trauma, it doesn’t take Morgan long to realize the victim is actually still alive. She later explains the condition as the Lazarus Effect back at the station. Shortly after this, Karadec IDs the victim as Heather Wallace/Penny Hall based on a missing persons report filed by her boyfriend, Morris Jardine. It is only seconds after this that Morris is called down to the station where he is interviewed by Karadec and Detective Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie). He not only confirms Heather’s ID but gives an alibi for the time of the assault. Despite appearing sympathetic, neither Morgan nor Captain Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) likes him. Their discussion is interrupted by Oz, who confirms the real identity of Heather as Penny Hall. Soto orders Morgan and Karadec to find out if Morris is lying and why Penny lied to him.
When Morgan and Karadec meet with Penny’s landlord, they learn that she had a much younger boyfriend, Lucas Philips (Christopher Phi) who was murdered. Once the landlord is gone they not only find evidence of Lucas, but they find a murder board hidden in the closet.
Back at the station, the team learns that Penny was investigating her boyfriend’s murder, which is now a cold case. They also learn that Penny’s attack shares shocking similarities to that of Lucas’s murder, except for the rice in Lucas’s hair. Being that Lucas was a professional tennis coach at a prestigious club, the members and employees become the immediate suspects. Detective Boding, who worked the original homicide, cleared a dozen of the members and employees, but Penny’s board, itinerary, and club member boyfriend clearly indicate that she was still suspicious. Soto orders Karadec and Morgan to start poking around the club.
Morgan and Karadec are right in the middle of questioning Edward Wilson (Charlie McElveen) when Blaine Wilson shows up with a guest complaint. Both Eddie and Blaine not only remember Penny, but they also remember Lucas. Despite recognizing them, they have nothing to add to the investigation. While Karadec works on getting a warrant to view the brother’s personal profiles, Morgan speaks to the Club Attendant about his black eye. He tells her that he got it from trying to dissuade Cameron “Swizz’ Smith from selling illegal goods on their property.
When Morgan and Karadec drag Swizz down to the station he admits to knowing Penny and claims that she was hassling him about killing Lucas even though he swears he didn’t. As for the club, Swizz claims he wasn’t selling but instead was trying to get in to see Blaine because he owes him money. This interrogation is abruptly ended when Karadec receives word that Penny just woke up at the hospital.
At the hospital, Penny tells Morgan and Karadec that she was on the beach because she was responding to a call from her billboard ad about Lucas. Although she claims the call sounded legitimate, that is pretty much all she remembers besides getting hit in the back of the head. She also adds that Blaine and Lucas had their fair share of problems, but she could never confirm anything because Eddie protected Blaine so well. While they are there Morgan also happens to notice a necklace that Penny is wearing, a supposed gift from Lucas.
Back at the club, Eddie tells Karadec that he’s cleared a lot of things up for his brother but claims he would never go as far as murder. While they are there Morgan also happens to notice a wall of collectibles from every country that Blaine and Eddie have visited since being very young. After leaving Eddie’s office, Morgan notices a member, Shelby Havertz (Monica Young), who has a necklace just like Penny. Morgan also happens to notice that this one is a fake. Although Shelby does not recognize Penny, she does recognize Lucas and not only admits to giving him the necklace but also admits to having an affair with him.
While the rest of the team discusses the complexities of the affair, Morgan notices from the murder board that Lucas’s death does not match up with the high tide, meaning that he was likely murdered elsewhere and dumped on the beach. After making this big discovery, the team hits a dead end and despite the pep talks, Morgan becomes frustrated. When Karadec calls for a recess, Soto pulls Morgan aside to discuss Roman Sinquerra’s case, even though she has nothing new to add.
Both Karadec and Morgan continue working on the case when they return home. At one point, Morgan shows up at Karadec’s apartment and forces her way in. Despite the intrusiveness, Karadec lets her stay and they continue to work the case, over Chinese. Not for lack of trying, but Karadec and Morgan don’t uncover anything new until Morgan leaves and notices Karadec’s flickering front door light. Seconds later, Morgan and Karadec are on their way to Eddie’s office while Morgan explains how she came to her conclusion about Eddie being the killer. The only problem is that everything she has is circumstantial.
By the time Karadec and the cavalry show up, Eddie is long gone. Thanks to an upended photo on his desk, it doesn’t take Morgan long to figure out where he is going. Once they arrive at the cliff, Eddie is in the position to jump. Thanks to Blaine, it only takes them a second to talk him down.
With the case solved, Morgan is avid to make her date with Tom after she stops to tell Penny they’ve caught Lucas’s killer. While Morgan is on her date with Tom, Soto interrupts to call Morgan down to the office, where she tells her that she has unearthed a clue in Roman’s case. Not just a clue but someone who Roman met with multiple times, Gio Cornforth. Although Gio is a hard man to track down, Soto has apparently come close. Before the episode ends, Soto also tells Morgan that Gio is known as a concierge for people of the law and people against the law.
High Potential Review
I can’t say this was a bad way to come back into the series but it certainly didn’t reveal everything that I was hoping to learn. Although we are now left with more questions than answers, at least we did get to learn some new things. As far as the case goes, it was nice that the returning episode hit close to home for Morgan. That said, I was surprised we didn’t get to see more of Elliot and Ava. It’s not that I am complaining because I can always do without these two. All said and done, I’d give this episode a 5.3 out of 10.
