Legs Open Hearts Broken – As this episode of Heartbreak High begins, Darren (James Majoos), Amerie (Ayesha Madon), and Quinni (Chloe Hayden) are ready for this year’s school camp. Amerie worries that everyone hates her again. Quinni gives her the evidence she has on Bird Psycho. Voss (Angus Sampson) catches Ant trying to sneak liquor onto the bus. Amerie watches Malakai (Thomas Weatherall) and Rowan (Sam Rechner). She questions whether they’re a thing now. Amerie insists she doesn’t care anyway since she has bigger fish to fry. She catches up with Rowan and tells him she’s really happy for them. On the bus, Zoe (Kartanya Maynard) gives an election poll update that confirms Spider is still in the lead.

Sasha (Gemma Chua-Tran) passes out condoms hoping to boost her campaign. Spider (Bryn Chapman Parish) and Missy (Sherry-Lee Watson) go back and forth with insults. He learns she’s bisexual. Ant suspects Amerie is devastated now that Malakai and Rowan are together. Before long, the students arrive at Camp Wayback. Rowan and Malakai decide to bunk together. Voss tells Jojo (Chika Ikogwe) it’s about survival of the fittest. She reminds him Woodsy wanted them to use the camp to bring the students together. Jojo tells Amerie, Harper, and Quinni that Zoe is going to join them. Zoe tells them she pities them for running around degrading themselves. She thinks Amerie turned the school into a sex-obsessed horror show by making that map.

Amerie gets rid of her so she can talk about the Bird Psycho suspects with Harper (Asher Yasbincek) and Quinni. Quinni admits it could be anyone. Outside, Amerie gets tired of watching Rowan and Malakai together. Darren doesn’t mind watching though until Cash (Will McDonald) interrupts. Quinni is busy studying the suspects. That night, the students get drunk and party while Zoe yells at them to shut up. They play “never have I ever” and learn about their sexual experiences. Jojo breaks them up. Spider finds Missy putting on moisturizer. After initially being mean to him, she offers him some. Missy puts it on for him. When they get a bit too close for comfort, she leaves. Cash checks on Darren in the middle of the night. Cash tries to give Darren what they want, but Darren stops and says they should go to sleep.

Quinni wakes up and catches Zoe trying to go through someone’s bag. The next day, Quinni tells Amerie she can’t find her phone. Jojo talks about the guided meditation they’re going to do. She guides them through it. The speaker switches to another phone and everyone hears Amerie and the others talking about Bird Psycho. Spider grabs the speaker so Amerie can’t turn it off. Malakai hears Amerie talking about him. Voss gets the speaker and throws it into the woods. He says they’re going to bush. Malakai is not happy with Amerie. Quinni tells her she thinks she knows who Bird Psycho is. As they walk through the woods blindfolded, Quinni tells Amerie she thinks Zoe is responsible. Harper tries to smooth things over with Ant who thought they were friends. Voss explains that this activity is about teamwork.

To get back to camp, they’ll have to work as a team. Voss wants to leave it to them although Jojo has a bad feeling about this. Once they’re alone, the students remove their blindfolds. Amerie wants to get proof from Zoe using her fists. They begin following Spider even though Missy believes they’re going the wrong way. Before long, they find a place to rest and realize Ant has eaten all their food. Rowan reveals his mom made him and his brother do Cub Scouts. Spider thinks they should stay put until someone finds them. Quinni suggests going downhill, finding a stream of water, and following it to agriculture. Cash tries to talk to Darren about what happened last night. Cash argues Darren spends all this time trying to take things further. When he finally tries, Darren rejects him.

Darren asks how it feels knowing Cash is only doing it to pity them. They end up finding mushrooms. They take them to the others and question whether they should eat them. Ant eats them right away. Jojo tells Voss she’s going back to get them. Voss tells her how his dad helped him by dropping him off in the forest where Ivan Milat buried his victims and forced him to find his way back. Jojo gives them one more hour. Ant begins hallucinating and talking to a tree. The others decide to eat some of the mushrooms as well. Quinni tells Amerie they should stay sober, confront Zoe, and make her confess. She doesn’t realize Amerie has already consumed mushrooms too. Before long, Amerie and Harper wonder if the mushrooms are going to work. Then, they do work. They think they’re crawling through a tree, but Quinni watches them crawl around on the ground.

Jojo tries to find the students. Voss tells her to relax because he’s sure they’ll be fine. Jojo decides to call search and rescue, but her call cannot be connected. Cash takes Darren away from the others. Qunni and Amerie try to get Zoe to admit to being Bird Psycho. Zoe gets upset and yells that she’s not Bird Psycho. She reveals she was sneaking around at night because she was paddling the pink canoe. Zoe eventually admits to stealing Amerie’s vibrator. Spider finds Missy and tells her he didn’t want her to be alone. They end up making out. Spider goes down on her. Malakai hallucinates and believes Rowan is Amerie. Rowan gets upset and leaves. Amerie finds out what’s happened and tells Malakai to sleep it off. Cash tells Darren they have to learn to talk if they’re going to be in a relationship.

Darren admits the game threw him because they didn’t know Cash had done all that stuff. Darren wonders why Cash did it with them instead. Cash wants to find a way that works for both of them. Darren doesn’t want him to be uncomfortable although Cash says that’s impossible. Cash tells Darren what he wants. In the morning, Quinni hears her phone’s alarm. As she tries to retrieve it, she ends up getting bit by a snake. Amerie apologizes to Rowan if this whole situation was caused by her. She keeps doing crappy things even though she’s trying to be a better person. Amerie wants to get out of his way since she thinks he has something with Malakai. Rowan believes he might have been at the right place at the right time. He thinks they can all be better if they really want to be.

Cash and Darren return to the others. They soon learn that Quinni is missing. Sasha finds her on the ground. Quinni thinks she might have 30 minutes left so she can’t panic. Missy says the creek runs downhill to the campsite. They lift Quinni who mentions her phone. They manage to carry Quinni to Jojo and rescuers.

 

Heartbreak High Review

This episode of Heartbreak High tested the students of Hartley High during school camp. Initially, Jojo wanted the students to do guided meditation but that was ruined when the speaker played Amerie talking about others. Instead, Voss blindfolded the students, led them into the woods, and waited for them to find their way back.

Unfortunately, they didn’t. They found magic mushrooms and went on a trip. This gave the students the chance to explore their relationships. Cash and Darren took their first step towards sex while Missy and Spider finally hooked up. Malakai and Rowan’s relationship hit a speed bump thanks to Amerie who really wasn’t responsible.

The effectiveness of the episode will likely depend on what viewers are looking for. It was a bit wacky with some over-the-top humor and very heavy on sex so some viewers may not be up for that. The end of the episode may make the next one much better though since the students worked as one to help Quinni following the snakebite. Of all four episodes, this was maybe the weakest because the series is at its best when it’s gloomy.

This episode didn’t play to its strength, but some viewers will enjoy the rash humor and sexual tension. The episode scores a 5.5 out of 10.
