At the start of the episode, we see Simon (Remy Hii) floating in the water. Next, Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd) watches Lyle (Darren Gilshenan) practice his martial arts. They both receive a phone call from Maxine (Robyn Malcolm). They rush to the scene and meet with Bryan Nichols (Damien Garvey). He tells them that they’ll need to prepare themselves. Daniel and Lyle are stunned by what they see. After the intro, Daniel finds the message on his phone. He doesn’t understand what Simon is talking about. Daniel speaks with Fern (Ella Newton) on the phone for a short period.
At the office, Maxine tells Daniel about Simon’s sister, Karina (Sarah Thamin). His parents will be flying in later. Daniel learns that Simon has epilepsy. He also split with his boyfriend a few months back. Daniel realizes that he knew very little about Simon. Maxine puts Grace (Jolene Anderson) in charge of the autopsy. Lyle is instructed to assist her. Bryan and Maxine agree that it would be wise to keep Daniel busy. They assign him a case of electrocution. We quickly discover that the dead man is Ross Moran (Brad McMurray).
He meets with Turua (Emily Havea). She believes the death was just an accident. Daniel does not. He suspects that Moran was killed by someone. Daniel notices the injuries on the man’s hand. Fern follows Tim (Anthony Standish) to the racetrack. This time, Tim wins. It is clear that Lyle is having a tough time dealing with Simon’s death. Grace agrees to finish without him. Next, Daniel speaks with Grace about the autopsy. She is convinced that it was just an accident. Daniel lets Simon’s sister see his body.
After that, Grace catches Daniel going through her files. She suspects that he believes she might have made a mistake. He explains that he is just trying to understand what happened. They check the heart rated data from Simon’s smartwatch. They find that the rate dropped off right after Simon called Daniel. It also raised around 7:30 PM. Grace and Daniel speak with Bryan. He shows them footage of Simon leaving the boat. Then, he returns. They notice that Simon already has bruising on his face. Bryan shows Daniel a map of Simon’s cellphone pings.
Daniel follows Simon’s footsteps. He goes to The Gunner’s Daughter. He speaks with the bartender about Simon and Moran. The woman confirms that Simon was there and got into a fight with Moran. Maxine doesn’t like where things are heading. Bryan speaks to Daniel about his theory. Daniel admits that it all sounds crazy since Francis is supposed to be dead. Later that night, Daniel gets a visit from Stephanie (Anna Lise Phillips). She tells Daniel that Fern needs him. She wants him to focus more on the living and less on the dead. Daniel has a dream. He sees Simon. He is given a few pointers for solving the case.
Daniel meets with Grace at the lab. He believes that Simon was poised with a paralytic drug. It is clear that he still suspects Chester (Grant Bowler). Daniel speaks with Lyle about performing a second autopsy. Lyle agrees that it would be a good idea. He admits he should have removed himself from the first one. Daniel learns about Simon researching Skene’s next of kin. Daniel visits her. She gives him the letters. Daniel goes through Chester’s paperwork and confirms that the handwriting is the same. He shows Maxine. Grace and Maxine are convinced that Simon was killed by his epilepsy and Modafinil. Simon was using it to keep up with his hectic schedule.
Daniel attends the funeral. Simon’s sister gives him the notebook Simon wrote in. It contains writings about Daniel and Lyle. Daniel tells Fern that he believes Simon’s death was his fault. He says that he shouldn’t be chasing ghosts. Fern returns to Callan (Hunter Page-Lochard). She tells him what she intends to do. She visits Ross Moran’s place. Tim is there trying to get in touch with Ross. Francis watches as Fern breaks into the home. Maxine goes through the letters in Daniel’s office. Then, she goes to the evidence room and grabs the tests for E. Lafond and several other people.
She burns the evidence.
Harrow Review
I am sad to see the end of Simon. He was probably the most likable character in the series. The episode did a pretty good job paying homage to him though. It feels like this is going to be the last season of Harrow. I could be wrong, but it seems like things are being narrowed down pretty quickly. I had a hunch that Maxine was up to something shady. Is she covering for Francis?
I thought the episode was okay. It scores a 7.5 out of 10. Catch up with previous recaps of Harrow right now.
