At the beginning of the episode, Max (Mark Bonnar) and Jake (Jamie Sives) drive down the road after a night out drinking. They hit something in the road but continue on. A bit later, Jake hits someone standing in the road. He gets out and finds out that the man does not have a pulse. Max checks on the man as well before getting back into the car. The two men discuss the potential repercussions before Jake reveals that he took the man’s wallet. Now, they know that the man’s name is Walter (Joe Donnelly). Jake freaks out and decides to move the man from the roadway. Max reluctantly agrees to help. Once they get him onto the grass, Jake decides to ring the doorbell.
Nobody answers so Max checks the door and finds that it is open. They take the man inside and pose him in a chair. While there, Max finds a letter revealing that Walter has terminal cancer and was slowly dying. The note contains the man’s full name, Walter Wood. Jake nearly leaves his coat behind but comes back for it at the last second. When they leave, a light in the house across the street goes off. After that, we jump forward. Max wakes up in the morning and checks on his car before Claire (Sian Brooke) complains to him about arguing with the bride at her wedding. Claire is surprised that Max drove him but soon learns that Jake was behind the wheel. A call from Jake interrupts. Jake tells his brother that he hasn’t been able to sleep. Max promises to visit him at the record shop.
When Max visits, Jake wants to talk about the man they killed. Max does not. Max gives Jake to pay his phone bill so they can stay in touch. He also learns that Jake lost his wallet. Jake begins scouring through the obituaries every day to see if the man is on there. During this time, Max gets his vehicle fixed and continues with his normal life. Walter’s body is discovered and Jake finds his name in the obituaries. Max visits and learns about the obituary before Jake gets a call from Walter’s solicitor. He learns that he left his wallet at Walter’s house and the solicitor believes Jake was a friend. Max and Jake drive to Walter’s house and Max gives his brother instructions for getting his wallet back.
Jake goes inside the house and begins looking around. Jake tries to get in and out quickly but he can’t once he is confronted by Angie Curtis (Ruth Bradley). Max gets tired of waiting and goes in after his brother. Angie believes that Walter bought records from Jake. At this point, he finds out that Jake has been hanging out with Walter’s niece, Angie. Jake makes up a story claiming that Max met Walter playing the trumpet. Angie tells the brothers that she is going to be gone in a few days. In private, Max tells Jake that he needs to worry about Angie because she is the one who could get them caught. Jake finds his wallet but ends up staying with Angie.
They share a drink, listen to music, and dance before finally having sex and falling asleep together. In the morning, Angie brings Jake breakfast. They agree to get together later before Angie leaves for her meeting with the attorney. Jake calls Max and tells him about Angie. Meanwhile, Claire attends a spinning class. She gets angry and goes off on the instructor before apologizing. The solicitor speaks with Angie about mobster movies. Angie is suspicious that something else might have happened to Walter. Angie visits Jake at the store a short time later. She tells him about her suspicions so Jake says that they can get Max involved. Meanwhile, Max tells his employee Kenny Burns (Emun Elliott) that he is sacking him.
Then, he receives a call from Jake and learns what Angie wants to do. Max meets with them both. He tells Angie that he is going to speak with the friends he golfs with to find out what he can about Walter’s bruises. Next, Claire grills Max at home. She is suspicious because he has been sending so much time with his brother. Max visits Angie and tells her that his friends said it was natural and that Walter looked like he was ready to go. Claire arrives and suspects that Max is having an affair with her husband. Claire learns that Jake is in a relationship with Angie. Max reminds her of the funeral she forgot before the group agrees to go out for dinner that night. During that dinner, Claire tries to convince Angie to stay and she wants Jake to do the same.
Max pulls Jake aside and tells him that he needs to get rid of Angie. He tells his brother that he could get 11 years for hitting and killing Walter. When Claire takes Angie home, she encourages her to stay and reveals that Max is tone deaf. Meanwhile, Max and Jake find out that a neighbor has a camera. In the morning, they come up with an excuse to check the footage but the neighbor tells them it is a dummy camera. When they leave, the neighbor goes inside and checks the camera footage. Jake and Max argue outside before Angie interrupts. She shows them the clothing Walter was wearing. They have spots on the legs and the shoes are dirty. This raises Angie’s suspicions.
They learn that Angie isn’t going to leave just yet. After that, Max tells Jake that he could lose everything. They go to Kenny and try to convince him to take the case. Max tells Kenny that he is a good investigator and Jake tells him that it might help him get back with his wife. Max and Jake return with Kenny but Angie doesn’t seem too impressed with him. Kenny looks over the house and says that he wants to look at the medical files. Angie attends the spin class with Claire. Before it begins, they speak about the brothers. Claire admits she has never seen them spend so much time together. That night, Claire tells Max about the class and Angie. The following day, Angie questions Max about seeing his brother a lot. Max claims he always sees him.
Max takes Jake outside so they can speak about Angie give him Walter’s records. Max tries to convince Jake to end the relationship and get away from Angie. He is worried that his brother is going to go rogue. When the conversation ends, Max notices the neighbor watching them from the top window. Claire agrees to go out for breakfast with Tina from spin class. While there, they speak about relationships and Tina (Moyo Akande) says that she likes women. Tina asks her for her number. That night, Angie asks Jake about being a musician. Angie tells him that she knows Max didn’t know Walter and that he doesn’t play the trumpet. She believes that Max is up to something.
Jake makes up a story about Max representing Walter in some legal business in the past. Jake claims that Max just wants to help. Max spends the night with Claire who gets a message on her phone. Kenny returns to the scene and tells everyone that he feels reborn. He tells Angie that he wants to have another go at the investigation. Max arrives and learns that Kenny has given up booze. Kenny says that the fragments on the pants look like paint. He believes they could be car paint. He agrees to get them tested. Angie gets testy with Max before Kenny collects the evidence. Max follows him outside and offers to send the sample for testing because he’ll get a better rate. Kenny refuses.
He tells Max that he is going to give it everything he’s got. When Kenny leaves, Max notices the neighbor across the street. Angie asks Jake if he glad that she is going to be around for a little while. He says yes before giving her a kiss. Max goes to the neighbor and she says that she saw something. At this point, Max and Jake realize that they’re in trouble but they pretend that everything is okay.
Guilt Review
This was an excellent way to start a new show. Guilt is very unique and full of emotions. I found it funny and depressing. As long as the show doesn’t get too outlandish or slow, it should be spectacular. This episode was fantastic. I love the relationship between Max and Jake. The acting is excellent and the story is great so far. I am thinking that things are going to get worse for the McCall brothers.
Will Angie and Kenny find out the truth? Or, will Jake and Max be able to stop that from happening? I can’t wait to check out the next episode. This one scores an 8 out of 10.
