Gold Diggers Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

series 1 episode 1 gold diggers gertrude and marigold

Golden Girls – As the first episode of Gold Diggers begins, Gertrude (Claire Lovering) and Marigold Brewer (Danielle Walker) are in Dead Horse Gap in 1853. When they see a cop, they quickly hide believing he is after them. Once they realize he isn’t after them, Gertrude says they need to stick to the plan which is to change their lives by marrying newly minted dumdums or dying aristocrats. Marigold believes they’re the hottest girls in town by default. They visit Franny (Megan Lilly Wilding) thinking she will help them.

Fran pushes them outside, closes the door, and tells the servant that she has never seen them before in her life. They come back inside in hopes of convincing Fran that he knows them. Percy (Luke Mullins) is happy to see guests. He thinks they’re poo-poo girls and says they shouldn’t come to the front of the house. He leaves with Jerome (Wil King). Fran tells them to get the heck out of her mansion. Gertrude warns her that she won’t get rid of the Brewer sisters that easily.

At the pub, Gertrude and Marigold wonder where they’re going to stay now. Barry (Eddie Perfect) tells them women cannot drink in the pub even though he serves two kids. Barry sends them to the ladies’ lounge and serves them non-alcoholic beverages. He asks them not to come back because it is illegal and they’re annoying. They speak to a man about getting a house, but can’t without money. They go down by the water in hopes of enticing some of the men, but the men aren’t going to help. As they leave, Marigold sees a young man who is cute. They look through Marigold’s purse and find evidence of the terrible thing they did. They take them to the man in charge of houses.

They’re told he has them a house, but they can’t move in until tomorrow. Marigold wonders if this is bad karma. She suggests they can’t get a bed because of the dodgy stuff they did in Sydney. Two women approach them to accuse them of walking away with their merchandise. Albert interrupts and introduces himself. He tells them that the others are Vic and Molly. Marigold and Gertrude try to smooth things over with the women before leaving. They walk through the night until they run into Marlene (Susan-Ann Walker) who describes herself as the local night wench. She learns that the sisters are trying to find rich husbands.

The sisters ask Marlene if she knows where they can spend the night. They hide in the bloke’s toilet until a man knocks on the door and says he needs to use it. Gertrude gives Marigold encouragement and insists everything will be okay. They go into the pub and drink until they get arrested. The cop wakes them up in the morning and tells them to get out of the jail. He asks Marigold to hang out sometime, but Gertrude says she’ll pass. They think they smashed the first gay. Marigold tells everyone that they’re going to own Dead Horse Gap one day. They show Barry that they have permission to drink at the pub whenever they want. They hang out at the pub until the episode ends.

Gold Diggers Review

The opening episode of Gold Diggers was not great. It is starting to seem like Claire Lovering is getting stuck in these silly shows. If there is a bad comedy from Australia, there is a good chance she is in it. Aside from the time period, there isn’t a lot to like about Gold Diggers. The humor falls flat, the characters are annoying, and the whole premise is silly.

The series may develop into something better as the story progresses, but a lot of people will drop out after this episode and it is easy to see why. If anything, this show is only going to cater to a small portion of the Australian viewer base. Everyone else will be annoyed by the humor and over-the-top characters.

The episode scores a 4 out of 10. Recaps of Gold Diggers can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising on Reel Mockery here.
