At the beginning of the episode, Julia (Julia Ormond) and Benjamin Greene (Ben Barnes) move in together. Julia is surprised when Ted (Alex Jennings) arrives at the door. He forces his way inside before making himself a drink. Leo (Archie Renaux) enters the room. Ted and Leo leave moments later so they can enjoy a bike ride together. Back inside, Ben tells Julia that the home is incredible and her children are very lucky. Meanwhile, Della (Jemima Rooper) has sex with another woman. Once that ends, she goes through her ex-girlfriend’s social media pictures and finds out that she is with another girl.

The following day, Della nearly falls asleep on a guy’s shoulder. That guy looks remarkably similar to her brother Patrick (Sebastian Armesto) who calls her seconds later. Patrick is concerned since Ben doesn’t have a social media presence. He wants to follow Ben but Della isn’t interested in doing that. Della gets off of the bus and drops her belongings as she tries to get inside her apartment build. Meanwhile, Julia hangs out with Ben. They flirt and kiss before they get on a train. Ben gets a call and he brushes it off as some PPI nonsense. He wants Julia to meet some of his friends.

They meet up with Bianca (Elena Saurel) and Zac (David Avery) later that night. Zac is interested in finding out how the couple met so Julia gives him a brief rundown. Meanwhile, Della gets drunk and goes to her ex’s house. Della is upset that she had to hear from her brother that her ex moved back. She makes a fool of herself by falling on the ground and such before she is told to go home. Meanwhile, Bianca tells Julia more about Ben’s past. Ben was ready to marry the girl. He asked her parents and everything but the woman said no and she already had another man.

Julia is shown a picture of Ali as well. At the end of the night, Julia tells Ben it feels like he is hiding a woman at his place. She quickly apologizes and says it was a joke. Nevertheless, Julia ends up going home alone. Julia shows up at Patrick’s house so Eimear (Yasmine Akram) makes a bed for her. Patrick tells Julia about Lottie taking and hiding everything before making sure his mother has everything she needs. Della gets a message from Patrick saying he can’t do this alone so she offers to help. In the morning, Julia and the others get a message from Leo about the man being there to service the Aga.

Julia notices the wound on Patrick’s hand before telling him he doesn’t always have to be tough on his brother. Julia takes the baby for a walk and finds out that Eimear is thinking about returning to work. Meanwhile, Della visits Patrick at work. She finds out that Patrick has been investigating Ben. He works as a copywriter just like he said. Della is introduced to Heidi (Katie Clarkson-Hill) too. Julia goes to Ben’s workplace to spy on him but Bianca catches her. She lets Julia know that Ben was working from him that day. Della watches as Patrick calls Ben’s workplace and gets Ben’s new address.

That night, they go to the address and find out that it is bad flat. Della gets a call from Julia about coming over for dinner. Della agrees and ends the call quickly by pretending she is going on stage. Ben steps out of his flat and looks around like he is scared. Patrick and Della go to the door and Patrick takes a picture through the mail slot. The picture shows an eviction notice for Ben. Della leaves but Patrick stays behind to continue the investigation. In the morning, Della arrives to help Julia. Patrick pulls her aside and plans to break the news to Julia. It doesn’t happen.

Julia admits they’ve had a falling out and she says she is too old for this. She confesses that she might be in love with Ben. Later, she tries to call Ben but the number is not recognized. Della calls her ex and asks to meet with her. They meet up before too long and end up having sex. After that, Della gets a call from Julia telling her she is outside. Della looks over the balcony and finds out that her mother is back with Ben. Julia explains she couldn’t get in touch with Ben and handled it badly. His phone was in his pants which were in the wash.

During the group conversation, Della is forced to lie again about saying she was going on stage. After that, Della gets a call from Ted who wants to prevent Julia from hurting herself. Della doesn’t want to get involved and tells her father to speak with Patrick. Ted tells her that he has to constantly defend her from Julia who says she will never get a job, settle down, and have kids. That night, Della performs at a small club. Her ex is there and it doesn’t seem to go well. Her ex tries to cheer her up backstage but Della isn’t having it. She takes it out on her ex because her gig didn’t go well. Eventually, Della blames everything on her father.

Moments later, Della gets a call from her brother. He has found something important that he needs her to see. He says it is about Benjamin.

 

Gold Digger Review

I want to like Gold Digger because it is interesting and unique. However, the show is a bit all over the place. There is way too much going on at once and I just don’t care about most of it. They should have dropped the stuff with Della and her ex. They should’ve focused a lot more on Patrick investigating Benjamin since that is the best part of all. I really can’t stand the flashbacks or flash forwards either.

I am not sure what they are but they don’t make any sense. The acting isn’t a problem but the way the story is unfolding is a bit slow. It isn’t the most realistic show either. It could be far better. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Gold Digger are available on Reel Mockery.
