Hibiscus – The episode opens with Hibiscus/Orville Black (Chyna McQueen) denying she is lost and needs saving. She needs her older sister, Detective Millie-Jean Black (Tamara Lawrance). An injured Hibiscus walks down an isolated road. At the hospital, Millie watches Detective Curtis (Gershwyn Eustache Jnr) pushed away on a gurney. Daniel (Jomo Dixon) pleads to accompany him to the ER. A worker refuses to recognize him as a family member. Millie scolds the woman for being ignorant. She tells Daniel that Curtis needs surgery. At the police station, Superintendent Barracat (Belinda Reid) orders Millie to go home. Millie doesn’t budge. Detective Luke Holborn (Joe Dempsie) says it is protocol to take time off. Millie requests two minutes with Janet Fenton (Shernet Swearine). Barracat reluctantly agrees. Millie works to calm Janet while Luke asks when she last saw Freddie Summerville (Peter John Thwaites). Lance Stennet (Christopher Daley) barges into the interrogation room. Millie says they communicated via text. Luke asks to see her phone. She asks if she needs an attorney. Millie assures her that she isn’t in trouble but Freddie committed a big crime and the assassins were out for him. Luke says Freddie was a police informant. Millie asks why she bought kid’s clothes from Bonnie’s Boutique. Janet claims to run errands for the Williams. Attorney Barrington Heywood Chris McFarlane), hired by the Summerville family, insists Janet be released if she is not going to be arrested. Luke criticizes Millie for focusing on the kid’s clothes instead of Freddie. Barracat demands Millie go home.
With nowhere to go, Hibiscus goes to Mama’s (Shanique Brown) “dead house.” Millie is working when she hears a knock at the gate. Retrieving her gun, she looks out the door to see Hibiscus. While dressing Hibiscus’ wounds, Millie says Curtis is in critical condition. Hibiscus informs her that Deltreece was beaten to death. Millie urges her to file a police report. Hibiscus assures her that the police will not go after the perpetrators. She explains how she refused to give Mama her pills when she was dying. She recalls how Mama beat her with a belt that she kept hanging on the wall. Hibiscus never returned to the house until tonight. The next morning, Millie recalls finding an intoxicated Orville in a sex house. Hibiscus refuses to stay at the house alone. Millie says Mama is gone and it is their house now. Hibiscus reluctantly stays. At Meadow Mews, Millie calls Daniel who is at work because no one can find out about his relationship with Curtis. He gets upset when he learns she never visited Curtis in the hospital and refuses to help her with Janet’s case. Sister Agatha (Dorothy Cunningham) tells Millie that Janet volunteers for the Daybreak literacy program to teach fourth-grade children to read and write. A man over the Daybreak program says Romeo Lawrence received a scholarship for a top school.
Hibiscus discovers a document that reveals someone made an offer for Mama’s house. She is haunted by the abuse she suffered at Mama’s hands. Millie receives a call from Richie (Derrick Levy) about an upset Hibiscus being at the pub. She speaks with Romeo’s parents about his scholarship. Mr. Lawrence says Romeo got a scholarship to Sunrise School in Hanover. Administer Maxwell handled the process. They are waiting until he settles in to visit. A short time later, Millie arrives at the pub. Hibiscus urges her to sell the house because Mama haunts it. Millie says no. Baccarat calls her to say the suspect she shot is believed to be dead. The Ministry has no evidence of a Sunrise School in Hanover. Millie leaves Romeo’s parents a voicemail requesting a meeting.
At a crime scene in Portmore, Millie identifies the victim as the man who shot Curtis. She asks about the branding on the victim’s back. Detective Lance Stennet (Christopher Daley) says it is the Bombers street gang branding. She believes Luke promised Freddie immunity for his help in a high-profile case. He says she is responsible for Victor Adebanjo’s death. She asks Meera Thakur (Anjil Mohindra) to do a bit of digging on Luke. Meera is hesitant to help her until she learns Luke knows about Victor. Shirley Lawrence sends Millie a video of Janet fixing Romeo’s tie. At the police station, Millie tells Barracat that Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence believe Romeo won a scholarship for Sunrise School which doesn’t exist. She insists Freddie is responsible. Luke says Freddie offered them intel on the Sanguis Meridian gang. After watching the video, Barracat orders Janet to be brought in for questioning.
Millie and Luke arrive and begin searching the Summerville estate. She calls dispatch to say there are signs of a disturbance before going inside. They discover multiple people dead as well as shell casings on the ground. Millie finds Marva dead. She joins Luke who has found Leddick dead. There is no sign of Janet or Freddie. Luke steps out to phone the Met. Millie begins searching Leddick and the crime scene with no gloves on. She finds a phone on the ground. Millie uses Leddick’s face to unlock the phone. After Millie contaminates the crime scene, the forensic team arrives. Millie speaks to Barracat who wants to know how they found a pile of corpses. Millie says her reason fled the scene. Freddie is a witness against Sanguis Meridian in the United Kingdom. Barracat doesn’t want that boy to get lost in all the politics here.
She reminds Millie to do everything by the book since Scotland Yard is watching. Millie meets Hibiscus and Richie. She promises to make it up to Richie. Once Millie and Hibiscus go home, Hibiscus argues about everything. Millie tells her she’s forgetting about how they used to dream. Their mom took everything from them but they can get it back. Hibiscus knows Millie fears Mama is going to come for her too. Millie argues she came back for her although Hibiscus says she came back for the ghost of a little batty boy. Hibiscus says Orville is gone and there’s no one for Millie to save. They argue about what happened previously. Millie begins breaking stuff and saying everything is evil. They begin fighting over their mother’s ring. Hibiscus pushes Millie and knocks her to the ground. Millie says she just wanted to make things right for them. Hibiscus insists she can’t. She wonders why Millie can’t see that there’s a new family waiting for her.
Curtis remains in the hospital. Millie visits him when he wakes up. She admits he’s the only person she can bear. Millie tells him that the Somervilles are dead. Freddie is still out there and Janet is likely with him. Millie has Leddick’s phone with her. She signed it out to get it to digital forensics. Millie found nothing useful at first glance, but she wants Curtis to see if she missed anything. Curtis was thinking she might’ve actually just wanted to visit him. He is not happy with her. Curtis says there are some deleted files and photographs. They find pictures of a boy named Romeo Lawrence. Millie says Leddick was involved in his abduction.
Get Millie Black Review
The quality of the series drastically declined from the pilot episode. It’s unfortunate the show didn’t stick to Orville’s abusive childhood and transition to Hibiscus. It insults the very core of its audience with its back-and-forth agendas.
Millie knowingly contaminates the crime scene of a soon-to-be high-profile case. She removes a valuable piece of evidence (Leddick’s phone) for her own benefit. The manner in which she holds her firearm is amateurish at best. The episode deserves a 4.5 out of 10.
