As the episode begins, Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) visits Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle). They speak about Ann’s parents. Ann admits she thought highly of Anne when she was younger. After the intro, they speak about having children. Anne changes the subject quickly. She explains that she once dissected a dead baby. Meanwhile, Elizabeth (Rosie Cavaliero) and the other maids speak about Eugenie’s pregnancy. It is suggested that they should tell Marian (Gemma Whelan). That idea is quickly squashed. Anne continues to sweet talk Ann. Anne talks about her family wanting her to get married. Anne wonders how they could even say that Ann is an invalid. She doesn’t believe it.

Their conversation is interrupted and Anne leaves. She tells the camera that she wants Ann to realize what she feels for her is love. Next, Anne speaks to Samuel Washington (Joe Armstrong) about coal and James Holt. She consults with him a short time later. James believes he can help Anne get a higher price for her coal. Christopher Rawson (Vincent Franklin) arrives in town. He meets with his brother Jeremiah (Shaun Dooley). They chat about Anne returning to town. Christopher learns about the coal lease. His brother believes they should offer her a lease so they can mind the coal legally. Anne visits William Hardcastle.

She asks William about his other son. Then, she asks Thomas about his condition. Anne checks on Alice and the boy. It is revealed that it will likely be impossible to find and prosecute the culprit. Anne spends time hanging out with the injured boy before leaving. Later, she tells her family that she intends to build an ornamental moss house on the property. She wants to turn it into a park of sorts. Anne learns that Ann’s family has been sponging off of her. She helps Ann write a letter with the intention of getting the money back. Ann tells Anne that she is supposed to go on vacation with Catherine. It is clear that she isn’t too interested in the trip.

Anne isn’t happy about it either. She doesn’t want Ann away for three weeks. Anne invites Ann to go to Switzerland with her. John tries to smooth things over with Eugenie. Anne tells Ann a dirty secret about men. They talk about having the urge to kiss someone. Anne confesses that she would like to kiss Ann. Ann is stunned by the comment, but doesn’t reject the offer right away. It is clear that Ann is fully infatuated with Anne now. Anne believes they can be happy together. Anne speaks to a friend about Ann and her problems. She is told that Ann needs a friend who is older and wiser than Catherine Rawson. Anne returns home and goes through her letters.

She learns that Donald has proposed to her old flame. John asks his girls how they would feel if he got married again. They laugh about it at first, but don’t seem to mind either way. Anne meets with Christopher Rawson. She wants to know what the constable is doing about the boy’s case. Christopher tell her that she’ll need to talk to Jeremiah about the coal. He doesn’t believe the culprit will ever be brought to justice because he is so far away. Ann begins packing for her upcoming trip. Catherine isn’t happy that Ann has only talked about Anne since she has been there. Catherine tells her about the rumors involving Anne and other women. Ann defends Anne.

Anne meets with Jeremiah. They begin talking prices for the lease right away. Anne wants 226 pounds per acre. She tells Jeremiah about her conversation with James. She believes James was trying to dupe her as well. Anne threatens to sink her own pits. Jeremiah offers 150 pounds. Anne refuses to budge from her previous offer. Later that night, Jeremiah consults with his brother. Christopher admits he used to know Anne in Halifax. Anne gives Ann a gift. Anne tells her to always wear it. Ann wishes that they could go together. Anne explains she has been invited to a wedding. She doesn’t want to go, but might need to. Anne leaves after Catherine arrives.

Samuel and Anne negotiate with Mr. Hinscliffe. He doesn’t like the price they’re offering. Anne doesn’t believe Hinscliffe would ask a man for a lower price. He eventually agree, but Anne wants to discuss the matter with the other party. When he leaves, she tells Samuel to ask Holt how much it would really cost to sink the well. Anne tells Eugenie that they’re going to London. She speaks with her aunt.

She tells her that she will be attending the wedding for image purposes. Anne attends the wedding. It is clear that it is tough for her. She speaks to the bride after the ceremony. She apologizes for hurting Anne. Anne rushes home and tells Eugenie that they’re going to the Lake District where Ann is.

Gentleman Jack Review

This episode of Gentleman Jack was fairly entertaining. I really appreciate the chemistry between Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle. Things are starting to pick up with the coal mine. I have a feeling that Ann is going to create big problems for Anne in the future. Will Anne’s little game backfire? I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. This episode scores a 7.5 out of 10.
