Gangs Of London Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

gangs of london action scene

As the 5th episode begins, Darren Edwards (Aled ap Steffan) hangs out with his pal. They walk through the woods before digging up a little box. Darren opens the box and finds a gun inside. He tells Ioan (Darren Evans) that the guy is a pedophile and it’ll only take one shot for him to pay for everything. Darren is confident that they’ll be able to get away from all of them once it is over. Ioan agrees and tells his friend to load the gun. Then, we jump to the present and join Darren who is hiding from Wallace and the others. Mal (Richard Harrington) tells him to get away from the window and stay inside until the boat arrives. Darren is told that his father is looking for him but Darren says he doesn’t care about his father after what he did to Ioan.

Mal warns him that this is too big to fix and a lot of people are hurting for what Darren did. Darren complains about the place having no Wi-Fi and Evie (Caroline Lee-Johnson) quickly enters and mocks him. She tells Darren to do something besides moping around all of the time. Evie talks about selling her stock before realizing that Darren has done something awful. As they go about their business, Darren messes with his gun. Then, we see Kinney Edwards (Mark Lewis Jones) bleeding on the ground. He tries to stop the bleeding by putting dirt on his bullet wound. He watches as a man pulls up in the park and lets a dog out. That man, Leif (Mads Koudal), has a gun and he has Tove (Laura Bach) with him.

Leif enters one of the campers and finds a phone underneath it. He grabs the phone and reads the messages that are available. Leif and Tove believe that Kinney couldn’t have gotten far before the cellphone dies. Lief tells Tove that he knows where Darren is hiding and he wants to arrange for Ulrik (Andrew Laithwaite) and a team to get him. When Kinney spots a horse nearby, he grabs a rope tied to it and lets it drag him away. After that, Darren watches as Mal leaves the property. Once he is gone, Darren climbs down into the cellar and finds what happens to be a tunnel. It is filled with bullets. Evie tells him that he better not take any of the bullets and that they won’t fit his starter pistol anyway. She asks who gave him the metal and says she only knows Mickey Cartwright from that area.

They joke about the amount of money Evie makes and not having money for an Internet connection. She shows him her bullet wound and tells him how she got started. Mal makes it to the local pub and steps inside. We see what appears to be the same dog on the ground. Mal steps up to the counter and asks for Frank before Ulrik tells him the service is slow. Mal gets angry with Ulrik before Frank arrives with a bowl of water for Baxter. Mal gets the supplies for Evie. During his conversation with Frank, he notices blood around a box that says First Aid Supplies on the side of it. Then, Ulrik pretends to get lost while looking for the toilet. Kinney makes it to a pond and drinks water.

He checks his wound and pulls a big worm out of it while the horse suffers nearby. Kinney continues until he reaches the roadway and notices a security camera nearby. He decides to go in the opposite direction toward a house in the distance. He looks through the window and sees a little girl preparing the table. Her father approaches and places a shotgun down next to her. Kinney goes to the family’s barn and finds a Land Rover but the man inside realizes something is up and goes after him. Kinney hides behind the vehicle and grabs a pocket knife. He grabs the man from behind and tells him that he wants the Jeep and the gun. The man cooperates and Kinney tells him to call the police tomorrow but not sooner than that.

Kinney tries to call Mal to tell him what has happened with Sean Wallace. He encourages him to make Darren leave on the boat even if it gets there before he does. We rejoin Darren as Evie asks him if he should be inside. He talks to Evie about Albert and their laziness. Darren offers to work if Evie lets him stay but she can’t because he killed someone and it wouldn’t be safe for them. Kinney stops at a bathroom and tries to stop the bleeding by stapling his skin together. Then, he overhears Ulrik asks about the toilet. Ulrik enters the bathroom seconds later.

Ulrik gets close to the door and pulls out a handgun. He listens closely with the gun placed directly against the stall door. Kinney grabs the shotgun and points it in Ulrik’s direction. Ulrik hears something in the distance and that prevents a potential shootout. He turns around and that gives Kinney time to escape through the window. Once outside, he spots Leif and Tove walking from the building. They enter the building before Ulrik kills Frank. Then, everyone leaves together. They open the van door and get suited up for a war. After they get ready, the small army marches toward Darren’s hiding spot. After a break, Darren is introduced to Evie’s other workers and Mal arrives. One of the boys grabs a gun and aims it at Mal before Evie calms him down.

Evie is told that they were unable to deliver the goods to Cartwright because someone torched him in his kiosk. Evie blames Darren and takes the gun from him. He wants to know who Darren kills. Mal tells her that he killed Finn Wallace and that angers her. Darren spots his father running toward the house. Kinney is followed by the army. They open fire and kill most of Evie’s workers but Kinney manages to hide behind the truck. Then, he crawls inside without being shot. Evie watches as one of the boys is shot and killed outside. One of the boys pulls a lever and it places a shield around the house or something. The shooting stops and the soldiers outside prepare to flank the house.

Mal, Kinney, and the others inside grab weapons and begin fighting back. The soldiers try to climb into the house. Evie is given a gun but she is too distraught to defend herself. She eventually snaps out of it, grabs the gun, and begins firing into the fireplace. This hits one guy before Kinney finishes him off by setting him on fire. Mal decides to go to the roof while Kinney grabs his son. The soldiers on the roof begin removing roof tiles so they can get inside of the house. Mal and one of Evie’s boys prepare for a firefight. The soldiers up top set up C4 so they can blow a hole in the ceiling. Before they can do it, the boy opens fire on them. He gets a few but goes down when the C4 explodes. Mal enters and shoots at them next.

Then, the soldiers enter the house and the firefight resumes. Ulrik and the soldiers outside prepare to blow the door open with C4. Mal makes his way back downstairs before Evie’s boy is killed. Mal is shot too but he gets a few more enemies before he drops. He grabs a grenade and places it in a backpack before tossing it from the window. It blows Ulrik and the others up. When the smoke clears, Leif and Tove stand together outside. Inside, Kinney checks on his son and we see that Evie is still alive. Darren wants nothing to do with his father since he killed Ioan. They decide to escape through the underground tunnel before Evie promises to hold them back as long as she can. Darren tries to convince her to go with them but she refuses and prepares for a fight.

Leif enters and asks her where it leads but Tove kills her before he gets an answer. Kinney takes his son’s gun and fills it with bullets as they walk through the tunnel. He gives the gun back to his son and tells him that it is worth something now. They approach the door leading out of the tunnel and Kinney says they can still make it. Darren points the gun at his father and admits he has been thinking about killing him for at least a week. Darren says he did it before and it only took a second but his dad says it took a lot more. Darren breaks down and sobs before Kinney drags him through the door and out of the tunnel. They make it to the dock nearby. Evie’s husband isn’t happy because his wife isn’t around.

Then, the soldiers begin shooting at them from the hilltop. Leif rushes down the stairs and approaches while shooting at them. Kinney is shot in the back several times before Darren shoots at Leif. Darren and Kinney are shot several more times. Kinney tries to get his son up and get him on the boat by telling him to push it as far as it’ll go. Leif shoots them again and the talking stops. When Leif approaches, Kinney asks why he picked him. Leif pulls another bullet into Darren’s body before shooting Kinney too. After that, Leif calls Mr. Kapadia’s office and tells them that everything is done. Jevan tells him that they have a new target now and it is another son.

Gangs Of London Review

I am not really sure what to think about Gangs Of London now that the main storyline has ended. The series started with the death of Finn Wallace and that sent Sean on a mission to get revenge for his father. That required him to deal with Darren. Now that Darren is dead, I have to wonder where things are going to go from here. It is hard to believe they would kill that storyline so early in the season.

Isn’t it going to be a bit pointless now? Darren’s storyline was likely the most interesting and I really don’t care about any of the other characters besides maybe Billy but we rarely see him anyway. I suppose there is always the chaotic action to stick around for but I need a solid story to keep me interested.

I am not sure we’re going to get that since the lead storyline has ended. We’ll see but I’ll say that the episode was at least entertaining and I am not a huge fan of the show. The episode scores a 7.5 out of 10. You can find previous recaps of Gangs of London on Reel Mockery.
