From Season 3 Episode 6 Recap

Scar Tissue – The episode begins with Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey) waking in the middle of the night to find a restless Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) staring out the window. She admits to having a nightmare as well as her doubts about not doing enough when she was in Camden. Jim’s attempts to comfort her only lead to a huge argument about Thomas and life in general. The dispute ends with Jim not only going downstairs to sleep on the couch but the following morning, he’ll join a group returning to the lake to get food. Tabitha briefly reveals all this to Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) when she confronts her about the late-night screaming.

Jade (David Alpay) has clearly put a lot of effort into his bottle tree research but it’s abundantly obvious that Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) doesn’t share his excitement of wormhole and rift theories. Despite that, this encounter leads to Jade learning about the other bottle tree that Boyd and Sara Myers (Avery Konrad) encounter during their trek in the woods.

Victor (Scott McCord) finds Henry (Robert Joy) admiring an old soapbox derby car when he returns to his room at the Colony House. As he collects supplies for his trip into the tunnels, Victor will briefly share the origins of the car with him. Victor refuses Henry’s requests to show him around town because of his trip into the tunnels but he doesn’t invite Henry to walk with him.

Kenny Liu (Ricky He) and Mari/Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) are in the process of raiding the fully stocked ambulance when Boyd turns up at the hospital. He also lets Kenny know that he’s around if he wants to discuss his feelings, which he clearly does not. Inside, Boyd cautiously approaches Randall (A.J. Simmons) when Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) stops him to share news of the ultrasound machine. She’ll ask him to tell Fatima (Pegah Ghfoori) about the discovery and he’ll ask her not to mention his stopping by.

Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore) and Fatima are right in the middle of an argument when Boyd shows up to share the news. It doesn’t take him long to sense that something is off with the two of them and it’s only seconds later when they tell him about Fatima’s new cravings. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much to offer other than the news of the ultrasound machine. Both Boyd and Ellis appear a bit stunned when Fatima doesn’t show any interest in wanting to use the machine. Ellis eventually asks to speak with her alone.

Donna (Elizabeth Saunders) is in the process of blocking off Dale’s (Cliff Saunders) stuck body with stones when Tabitha approaches. Tabitha briefly attempts to comfort her with the loss of Dale, but it doesn’t take long to see that it is Tabitha who is seeking solace about wasting a golden opportunity. Donna practically tells her that she could be where Dale is and tells her not to waste the time with her children.

Despite the absurdity of everything Victor tells him about the town and going into the tunnels, Henry takes it all with remarkable stride. He even later refuses to leave his side when they arrive at the tunnels. While they debate this, Mari deals with an equally hostile Randall. As she attempts to examine his wounds and stress the importance of regular cleanings, it becomes clear that he’s emotionally struggling with the attack and his wounds. He eventually asks to be alone while he looks at his wounds for the first time.

Kenny begins to feel out of place in his own home when he has trouble finding a screwdriver that Tian Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) kept in a junk drawer. Things only get stranger when he inadvertently catches Julie smoking pot while trying to inquire about the utensil. Much to her surprise, he practically laughs the matter away and promises not to tell her parents as long as he is kept out of it if she gets caught. By this time, Victor and Henry have just discovered that Jasper isn’t where Victor expected him to be. Despite this and Henry’s insistence to leave, Victor demands they go deeper.

Fatima eventually agrees to the ultrasound under the condition that they don’t say anything about her cravings. As she is leaving for the hospital, Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) takes her picture and says that he’s working on a collage for the Colony House. She doesn’t appear to mind but at the same time doesn’t show much interest. By now, Jade has reached the other bottle tree, only to discover the recently deceased Tom (Reid Price) awaiting his arrival. The encounter immediately turns into a full-blown argument as soon as Tom begins teasing him over his drinking. This goes on for several minutes but practically ends with Tom telling him that he isn’t going to get anywhere if he doesn’t stop drinking and really focus.

Tabitha returns home to find Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster) at the kitchen table, reading one of Tian Chen’s books. Once their conversation suggests that he also heard them arguing, she apologizes. Her attention will soon be drawn to a stirring upstairs that turns out to be the ghoulish children, chanting Anghkooeey! She will later share the experience with Jade while also asking him to let Ethan help him with the bottle tree puzzle to keep him distracted. At the same time, Kenny approaches Donna about moving into the Colony House. She tells him that there is always room for him while Jade agrees to let Ethan help with the puzzle.

With no signs of infection and completely patched up, Randall is free to leave the hospital. However, as Mari discharges him and attempts once again to give him directions for cleaning the wounds, it becomes clear that he fears returning to the bus or doesn’t want to be alone. At one point he admits to being terrified and although he is rude about it she offers him a room at the hospital.

Henry becomes more fidgety the further he and Victor go into the tunnels. By the time they find Jasper, he’s practically beside himself but it is the discovery of something that belonged to Miranda (Sarah Booth) that sends him over the edge. His stirring and flailing around end up alerting the creatures, forcing him and Victor to flee from the tunnels. Victor guides them safely to the cargo truck in the woods, but Henry has an incredibly tough time digesting his experience.

Fatima nearly becomes hostile when the ultrasound machine reveals that she isn’t pregnant. Elgin has another strange experience with the Kimono Woman (Shuoxin Fu) when she appears in Fatima’s photo. With Ethan occupied on the bottle puzzle, Tabitha attempts to make sense of seeing the children which leads to the discovery of Jade’s sketches of wards at the food cabin.

The episode ends with Tabitha realizing that she’s seen the wards and three red stones before in a recurring nightmare.

From Review

Despite being needlessly long, this was another great episode. I have to admit that I was shocked by Fatima not being pregnant. I also liked the suspense of not knowing what happened with the group that went back for the food. I just hope the next episode isn’t entirely focused on them, but I would like to see how their trip is going.

I did as much enjoy Victor and Henry’s trip into the woods, although I do find the situation with Jasper intriguing. I could really care less about Elgin’s vision or story but I am sure that will play a huge part. I can only hope that it isn’t as Randall suggested and they are still somehow trapped in that dream state. I’d give this episode a 5.6 out of 10.
