Frasier Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

Cape Cod – Episode 6 begins at the bar where Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst) briefly explains to Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and Olivia Finch (Toks Olagundoye) how he’s been conned, although he seems to be the only one who doesn’t realize it yet. That is until he steps away to take a call from his credit card company. While he’s away, Frasier tells Olivia about his plans to rent a beachside resort for the long holiday. Apparently, Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin) and her family have been invited along with Eve (Jess Salgueiro), who just happens to be across the room with Freddy Crane (Jack Cutmore-Scott) browsing men’s profiles. By the time Alan returns with the realization that he’s been conned, Olivia has put the idea of Freddy and Eve dating in Frasier’s head.

Meddle Detectors – Roz is the first to arrive at the Cape Cod home and Frasier wastes little time unveiling his plans to subtly convince Freddy and Eve to hook up. Although she suspects that he’s overdone it just a bit and it will blow up in his face, she encourages him. They don’t get long to debate the issue thanks to the arrival of Freddy, Eve, and David Crane (Anders Keith). Upon their arrival, Frasier wastes no time whisking them to the balcony while he keeps Roz and David occupied. Freddy and Eve immediately recognize the romantic setting, but mistakenly think it is Frasier who is trying to make a move on Roz. Realizing what a bad idea confronting Frasier about pursuing Roz would be, Freddy and Eve set out to covertly spoil their good time.

It isn’t much longer that all attention is averted to the late arrival of Alice Doyle, who apparently got held up by an overzealous architecture professor. David immediately becomes smitten and learning that they share a love for board games makes him more so. Despite this, things take a very awkward turn the moment Frasier realizes Alice isn’t such a little girl anymore and Roz isn’t at all opposed to the idea of her and Freddy getting together.

Good Cape, Bad Cape – By the time the evening approaches, Frasier is so distraught over how Alice and Freddy are hitting it off that he practically begs Roz for help. Much to his surprise, she agrees to speak with Eve and find out if she’s interested in Freddy. Frasier promises to abandon his pursuit if she isn’t. Things never get that far because Eve incorrectly takes the talk as if Roz is approaching her for advice on pursuing Frasier. At the same time, Freddy makes the same incorrect assumption as Frasier. It isn’t long before Freddy and Eve have changed their end goal to helping Frasier and Roz connect while Frazier and Roz now want to keep Freddy and Eve apart.

After resetting the mood on the balcony, Freddie and Eve will attempt to call it an early night so that Frasier and Roz can be alone. This only increases Frasier’s panic and makes him pull out all stops to keep them apart, including forcing Alice and David’s board game on him. This only makes matters worse because the game immediately leads to Freddy and Eve alone on the balcony. Frasier attempts to intervene which leads to Roz intervening and eventually David. The situation gets so confused and hectic that Eve ends up pulling Alice aside to tell her that Frasier is interested in her mother. At the same time, Freddy encourages Frasier to pursue his feelings for Roz.

Alice doesn’t appear to have a problem with Frasier pursuing her mother while Frasier clearly still does not want Freddy to know that he was meddling in his business with Eve. Frasier even goes as far as staging a brief romantic encounter with Roz on the balcony as the fireworks begin in the background. This is pretty much where the episode ends.

Frasier Review

I really enjoyed the episode until the end. Things just got immensely confusing. I understand the show is limited on time and there was quite a bit to resolve in the last little bit but everything feelt so rushed. Almost so much that it made things confusing. I enjoyed the brief skit with Alan getting scammed at the beginning and would have liked to see that get more attention. I’ve always thought that Eve and Freddy would make a good match but I don’t know if the series will ever pursue it. I’d have to give the episode a 5.6 out of 10. Roz and Alice were a nice addition.
