As the finale of For Her Sins begins, Emily (Rachel Shenton) says people can’t accept that they have something inside they cannot get rid of. It is inherited whether you want it or not so they pretend. People pretend until it is not enough. Then, they have to surrender to who they really are. That’s what Emily did. Emily puts her plan into action in Laura’s house. When Laura (Jo Joyner) comes down, Emily says she made her a cup of tea. Laura has decided that she is going to tell Rob. She has been scared that she’d lose everything if she said it out loud. Emily waits for her to drink the tea. If they’re going to publish a story, Laura wants Rob to hear it from her first.
Rob urges her to choose her words carefully before telling her to finish her tea. Ian Stevens (Gerard Miller) visits Maggie (Ann Mitchell) at work. Maggie wants him to stop harassing her daughter. Ian says he was trying to talk to her about Jamie and give her a chance to tell her side of the story. Maggie insists there is no story. She warns him that publishing a story like this could be very damaging to his career. Maggie claims she is protecting her daughter from gutter journalism. She warns Ian that she’ll take legal action and he’ll have to sell his house to pay for it. Ian asks why she is trying so hard to keep him quiet if there is nothing to hide. He questions whether Ruth is her real name.
Laura asks Emily if she has seen her phone. When Laura is away, Emily pours scalding water on her hand. Emily goes outside. Laura gets something for her burn before noticing that she is woozy. Laura remembers Emily speaking to Ian when she was with Tom at the motel. Emily gives Ian everything he needs. She thinks she’ll have a confession by tonight. Ian tells her to be careful. Then, Emily calls Rob (Ducan Pow) to ask him to come over because Laura has done something terrible. She writes a letter from Laura to Rob saying the kids are better off without her. Rob meets Emily and finds out about the wound. He can’t believe Laura would do something like that.
Emily says she can’t do this anymore because Laura has been so different lately. She thinks Laura needs professional help since she is becoming more aggressive and unpredictable. Rob asks if Tom has been around. Meanwhile, a drugged Laura sees a picture of Jamie in front of her. Rob bandages Emily’s arm while she calls him an amazing man. Rob just wants to look after them now. He feels like a fool thinking Laura was happy. Emily admits she has never had that before. If she had someone like Rob, she’d never let them go. They kiss before Rob stops her. Emily says it is okay because she knows he feels the same. He pushes her away and knocks her book to the floor.
Rob notices that she has a lot of pictures and information about his family. He begins freaking out and asking why she has this stuff. Emily says he doesn’t know who he is married to and she is trying to help him. Rob tries to call Laura only to find that Emily has her phone. Emily says Laura killed her brother. They end up fighting until Rob is thrown to the floor and hits his head. Emily manages to knock him out with a bowl. A drugged Laura calls her mother. Maggie decides to leave work. Someone walks into the room with Laura. Emily picks up Eliza (Romi Hyland-Rylands) from school. Ms. Price (Isla Jackson-Ritchie) stops them to give them a letter and to make sure everything is okay. Maggie walks into Laura’s house and begins looking for her.
She picks up the picture on the floor. On the back, there is a note that says Emily Furness is Millie. She calls to get the address for Emily. Eliza tries to wake Laura who is sleeping in the car. Emily lures Eliza out of the car and takes her towards the lighthouse nearby. Maggie goes to Emily’s address and finds Rob knocked out on the floor. She calls for the police and an ambulance. Emily tells Eliza that she used to come there with Laura when they were kids. They go inside so Eliza can find the perfect hiding place. Once they find a place, Emily says she wants her to jump out and surprise Laura when she hears her coming. Emily uses a stick to block the door after leaving. The police tell Rob and Maggie that Elliot is fine.
Maggie says Emily is a spiteful little girl and was before the incident too. She suspects Emily has taken them back there. Emily goes back to the vehicle to wake up Laura. After Laura falls down, Emily says her family loves her more than they love her. Emily forces her to get up before saying it is like the good old days. As they walk together, Emily says she was so proud of her older friend Catherine. Emily reminds her that they had plans to sail away. Laura pleads with her to stop this. Emily pulls out a knife and reminds Laura that she isn’t in charge anymore. When Laura asks about her daughter again, Emily cuts her with the knife and shushes her. Emily admits she wanted to be just like Laura back then.
Eliza finally comes out of hiding and starts looking for her mommy. Emily begins recording on her phone and asking Laura to tell everyone what happened. Laura says Jamie followed them and wanted to come with them. When he got scared, he tried to go home. Laura believed he was going to tell on them. Laura alleges that Emily pushed her brother into the water. Emily questions why she kept the clasp from his cape. Laura claims Emily gave it to her, but Emily denies that. Eliza tries to get out of the lighthouse. Emily accuses Laura of pushing her brother and killing him. Laura finally remembers that she actually pushed him, but she tries to save him. Emily says everyone thought she was a murderer her entire life.
As for Laura, she got to pretend like nothing happened. Laura says her mom told her that no one would get into trouble if she just stuck to the plan. Emily says they’ll think she killed herself when her body finally washes up. They end up fighting with both of them falling into the water. They continue fighting in the water. Laura holds Emily under until Eliza yells for her to stop. Laura pulls Emily out of the water. She grabs Emily’s phone, deletes the recording, and throws the phone in the water. Laura comforts Eliza. Later, Laura hangs out with her family at home. Laura asks her mom if she feels any guilt. Maggie asks the same before telling her that she needs to let it go.
Maggie says everyone has to make hard choices in life. She urges Laura to let it go because she wouldn’t have any of this otherwise. Emily asks Laura why she is there. Laura admits she felt like she owed her an explanation. Emily says she is learning a lot there so she plans on becoming a lawyer. She would hate to be Laura though. Emily insists she’ll always be there so it isn’t over. She believes Laura misses her. She reminds her that she knows where she is. Laura leaves the jail.
For Her Sins Review
The finale of For Her Sins at least explained what had happened in the past and why Emily was out to get the truth from Laura. The performances were decent from everyone with Rachel Shenton playing the psychopath role well, but the story is still too farfetched to take seriously. The ending was pretty predictable, but it is a bit surprising that no one actually died in the end.
An episode probably could’ve been cut off of the series to get to the finish line sooner. The basics such as the camerawork and soundtrack were solid. The biggest issue is the silly story and the outrageous character behaviors since they seem to always do what Emily wants them to do. For Her Sins obviously wasn’t great or even original, but it was watchable enough.
As long as viewers have bare minimum expectations and don’t mind a few eye-rolling moments, they may enjoy For Her Sins for what it is, but it is best to watch it when nothing else is on. The finale scores a 4.5 out of 10. Recaps of For Her Sins can be found on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising with us here.

I think you said pretty much all that can be said; dumb premise but at least executed fairly well. 😉
Yep unfortunately. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the worst show I’ve watched in the last few months. That award would probably have to go to The Gallows Pole which I wouldn’t bother with unless you need a sleeping aid.
Beau is Afraid came out on digital yesterday. Extraction 2 came out on Netflix also. Bound to be some other trash horror on Shudder or something if not Tubi is a great source for 70s era exploitation films. So I think I’ll turn my attention to movies for a few days. 😄
haha! Tubi is actually great for older movies. Particularly enjoy the old true crime type shows and those based on true stories. A handful of shows will be out within the next few days/weeks including The Bear and I think Crime should be coming soon. That and Joe Pickett on Sundays although it is just okay and nothing to brag about.
