The episode opens with Nicole Butler (Jade Anouka) providing Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar) support during a mental health crisis. He receives a call from Marty McGreggor (Dino Fetscher) informing him of a body being found. Kierce heads toward the crime scene. Upon arrival, he finds Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) explaining to Marty how she came to find the body. Kierce requests she give him her phone. She claims the call came from a landline. Marty suggests she knew landline calls take longer to investigate. Kierce asks why she trying to make contact with Tommy Dark. Maya says if Claire Walker (Natalie Anderson) was searching for him, it is possible he knows something about her murder. When Marty tries to stop her from leaving, she punches him in the stomach and demands he never touch her again. After permitting her to leave, Kierce warns that the Burkett’s attorney would tear them apart without evidence. Maya is denied access to her car because it is linked to a crime scene.
Kierce says Maya is constantly finding dead bodies. She sarcastically confesses to killing Tommy and requests he arrest her. He assures her that they are on the same side. She accuses him of accepting 9,000-pound bribes from Judith Burkett (Joanna Lumley). She says the money was deposited in his Monktons’ bank account. He invites her to his house where he shows her proof of his streaming and gym memberships canceled, a cheap phone, and a watch. He urges her to run a background check on him. She refuses to divulge any more information.
Eddie Walker (Marcs Garvey) and Lily Burkett (Thea Taylor Morgan) are playing when Maya arrives. She tells him that the Burkett yacht captain when Andrew Burkett (Edward Harper Jones) died was found dead in a freezer. She says Claire was asking questions about Christopher Swain, a classmate of Andrew and Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage). Looking at Christopher’s photo, he recognizes the building as Crawmond Place.

Crawmond Place – Maya evades security and races to the mail sorter box to find an envelope addressed to Christopher. She knocks on his door when a glamorous woman (Judy Loe) says he is in a retreat.

They embrace.

She can hear heavy breathing before the call ends. She races in to check on Lily and locks the window. She has flashbacks of Joe and Claire’s murders. Later, someone watches her from outside the house.

After explaining the rarity of AB+ blood, Tommy’s blood type. Marty accuses her of lying. She admits to being with Corey who claimed he and Claire were working on a Burkett pharmaceutical scandal. She tells them about Corey’s hideout in the woods. Proctor orders Kierce to go to the hideout and Marty to the arcade. Marty refuses to let Kierce drive. Kierce tells him he told Molly. Marty bear hugs him.
Shane Tessier (Emmett J Scanlan) picks Maya up at the police station. He demands she tell him everything. She promises to never lie to him but refuses to say anything else. He tells her the police pulled Swain over for driving under the influence several weeks ago. He says it is a pattern but there is no record of jail time. He suggests Swain was sent to a posh rehab. Elsewhere, Abby assures Louis that Claire always felt he was part of her. Eddie offers to contact Louis’s father. Louis accepts the offer.

Fool Me Once Review
Kierce opens up to Molly about his condition. DNA in Maya’s vehicle is a match with Tommy Dark. Kierce and Marty find CCTV footage that puts her and Corey near Tommy’s storage unit. Fearing arrest, she tells them that Corey and Claire were working together to expose the Burkett medicine scandal. To throw the police off his trail, Corey hacks their computer system.
Christopher Swain has a history of DUI but he has no criminal record. Maya tracks him to a wealthy rehab to ask about the night Andrew died. He claims Joe killed Andrew.
Eddie invites Louis over to properly meet Abby and Daniel. He offers to connect him with his father.
Kierce finds evidence that one of the bullets that killed Claire was checked out of the evidence room per request of the military police. He believes Shane made the request.
Much about the series is unrealistic and downright incompetent policing. Corey hacks the computer system, Proctor’s response is to send Marty and Kierce out alone to locate him. There is enough evidence to arrest Maya for Tommy’s murder but she is released on her own recognizance. Kierce is distracted by his personal issues. Marty runs around like a chicken with his head cut off while Maya competently gets one step closer to solving the murders.

I just read in the Hollywood Reporter online this morning that two more Harlan Coben projects were green lit by Netflix following “the success of Fool Me Once”. 😂
lol. I have suspicions about that. Probably because Netflix sees a very low budget series with a possible high reward. More people are checking out Harlan Coben’s Safe right now than Fool Me Once and I never finished that one lol. Surprisingly though, Safe was released in 2018 and it has had more engagement than Fool Me Once in the last 7 days at least. Not sure if it is being aired somewhere else or what but it must be.
On top of that, I really haven’t seen much engagement on a Netflix show since Keep Breathing. I’d love to know how the subscriber numbers are actually calculated. For instance, T-Mobile offers Netflix for “free” although you know there is a fee hidden in there somewhere. With T-Mobile’s 117.9 million subscribers, does Netflix supposedly have 150 million additional subscribers or 260 million and 117.9 million from T-Mobile? Plus, many motels are offering free Netflix now. How does that factor into the company’s numbers?
Truthfully, I am just highly suspicious of some of the numbers coming out of these streamers especially Netflix. Amazon’s Shelter was interesting. The first episode had big engagement and it immediately sunk after that probably because people just didn’t like what they saw. No surprise it was canceled.
Maybe one day someone will dig into it and find out the truth. Until then, we have two more Harlan Coben shows to look forward to and I bet Richard Armitage will be in at least one of those hahahah.
