Welcome To Hell, Mike – As the second episode of Florida Man begins, Delly West (Abbey Lee) drives into Florida five days ago. She gets accustomed to the area before seeing Mike Valentine (Edgar Ramirez) speaking to Patsy (Otmara Marrero) in front of a motel. Delly eventually goes to the Gators Tail Lounge where she speaks to the EMT and asks if he’d like to save another life. She says he just needs to kill her. He helps her stage her death and gives her a drug that will slow her heart to make her look dead. After the fake shooting, the ambulance transporting Delly gets into a crash with a police car.
As she hides in the weeds, she sees a man pull the EMT out of the ambulance before stealing it. She pleads with Jason to get up. She spies on Mike as he returns to his room and finds Delly on the bed. After she tells him how her plan messed up, Mike admits he is happy to see her because he can trade her to Moss. She doesn’t want him to tell Moss because he’ll kill her for real. Mike steps outside to tell Moss Yankov (Emory Cohen) that she is really dead. Moss asks him to come back to Philly, but Mike reminds him that they had a deal. Moss screams for him to get back there. Mike tells Delly that she is officially dead and free to go. Delly shows him the gold coin. A flashback shows Gil Franco (Nick Basta) trying to tell Moss about the Spanish fleet that went down.
Moss doesn’t listen to anything he says. Gil says approximately one hundred million dollars in Central Florida. Delly tells Mike that he said it was in Orlando in a Penske truck at Lake and Colonial. Moss had a guy check it out, but he claimed it wasn’t there. Delly came to check and found nothing. She thought there might be a clue in Gil’s boat or the gold itself. Mike says he has to check out Gil’s boat anyway since he promised a friend he would. If there is nothing on it, Delly will have to make another plan. She suggests spending the night together. When Mike says no, Delly tries to convince him otherwise. They end up spending the night together after all. Kaitlin Fox (Lauren Buglioli) does a report about a liquor store robbery in Kissimmee.
The robber ends up shooting the clerk who pulled out a sword. He runs away and throws the gun onto the back of a gator. Captain Donna Delgado (Judy Reyes) asks Iris (Lex Scott Davis) about the Gil Franco murder. Iris explains that Moss had an alibi since he went to his girlfriend’s birthday party. Donna wants to know where his girlfriend put him after that, but Iris hasn’t found her yet. A young boy going fishing finds the robber’s gun. Mike hangs out with Delly on the beach and talks about her dad who isn’t around anymore. Mike says his dad is in Florida although he isn’t a good guy. He thinks they’ll have better luck finding a mermaid than any of the gold. Sonny Valentine (Anthony LaPaglia) speaks to a woman about letting Jay Cobb (Tony DeMil) use his boat again.
She suspects Sonny is getting a cut of whatever Jay moves with the boat. She is sorry to hear that his boy might be gone since she has noticed a lighter step from him since he has been back. Officer Andy Boone (Paul Schneider) asks Mike where he was three nights ago. Mike claims he was at the motel. Andy tells him that he looked into a woman for him. Then, a woman matching that same description was stretched out of the bungalows dead. Andy is shocked when Delly comes out and leaves with Mike. The woman working at the motel tells Benjamin (Isaiah Johnson) that Mike needs to go. Benjamin says Mike is a good man although she heard him talking about a dead girl last night.
He reminds her that it doesn’t involve them and Mike is a paying customer. She worries that Mike’s problems will become theirs before long. Deputy Ketcher (Clark Gregg) visits a gun show in hopes of buying a gun. No one will sell to him. When they find out that he is a cop, they make him leave. The young boy who found the robber’s gun tries to sell it to him before he can leave. Kaitlin Fox calls Mike and leaves a message asking if he got the ambulance footage and wanted to talk about it. When Mike and Delly search Gil’s boat, they find a bunch of auto-rifle cases. Although Delly thinks Gil was telling the truth about the gold, Mike says a gambler will say anything to save their skin.
Mike says he is going to save hers before walking away. He speaks to the man in charge in hopes of getting the keys to Gil’s boat. Mike harasses the guy and warns him that he’ll tell people about the pot farm in the back. After getting the keys, Mike returns to Delly and tells her how to operate the boat. He explains that she needs to get out of there because Moss is going to start asking questions that he can’t answer. Delly insists she doesn’t want to go without him. She is adamant that she is going to stay and find that truck. Mike calls Moss to say he is going to want to know who did this to Delly after the shock wears off. He suggests it is a message saying they’re not afraid of him.
Mike offers to find out who did it before walking away for good. Moss agrees, but he wants Mike to bring the killer to him so he can take care of them. Deputy Ketcher gets pulled over by a highway patrol officer. His wife uncovers the gun he just bought so John Ketcher is arrested. Andy Boone gets upset when he can’t find the tools he needs to search for evidence at the bungalow. Delly tries to call Mike from the motel, but he doesn’t answer his phone. John Ketcher tells his wife that he didn’t know the gun was a murder weapon. When he turns on the speaker, the other inmates learn that he is a police officer who has put many criminals behind bars.
Iris calls Mike to ask him about Delly who was allegedly with Moss on the night of Gil Franco’s murder. Mike claims Delly was with Moss all night. He insists he is getting close to paying off his debt to Moss. After the call, Patsy sees Mike so she invites him in. Delly goes to the crash site and looks around. She manages to get the USB stick. Deacon (Michael Esper) shows off his toilet before Mike asks Patsy for her help with something. He explains that there is a guy in the ICU at Coronado and he needs her to check on his status. She won’t help him unless he goes outside and speaks to Sonny. Patsy tells him to stop being a baby because they’re never all together. Donny brings Iris into her office because Dunney (Paul Brian Johnson) has a theory.
He explains that Moss doesn’t get his hands dirty after taking over for his old man. One of his guys would’ve done it and that means it could’ve been Mike Valentine. Iris says they haven’t been married for a year so there is no conflict of interest. Donna tells her that she is off the case. Moss talks to his henchman about having a funeral for Delly. When he checks his safe, Moss realizes that his USB thumb drive is missing because Delly has it. Delly finds that her computer doesn’t have a USB port so she tries to find a computer that does. Mike isn’t impressed with Sonny buying Tyler a police scanner. Sonny says a guy at the flea market didn’t know what he had. He goes on to say it happens every Saturday at Lake and Colonial.
Mike begins zoning out thinking about the gold until Sonny brings him back to reality. Sonny follows him out and tries to find out why he is still there. He says it doesn’t have to be bad between us, but Mike says there is no us. Mike speaks about finding the coin in the fish and his dad claiming he was destined for great things. Gil listens to him talking about the gold. Mike speaks to a guard about the truck and learns it was towed. Then, he goes to the towing company to look for the truck. He calls Delly to say he knows where the truck is. When the call ends, Delly is hanging out with Sonny.
Florida Man Review
The second episode of Florida Man was similar to the first although the absurdness was taken to another level. There were many eye-rolling moments in this episode so that is something viewers will have to get past to enjoy Florida Man. On one hand, the series isn’t eager to be authentic. On the other, the story is trying to be more complex than it should be for a show like this.
There are too many characters that they’re going to try to bind together conveniently in the end. In this sense, the series is pretty formulaic and matches the other shows that Netflix has released recently. Every viewer is different, but the humor hasn’t worked for me through two episodes so there is a good chance that it won’t satisfy others either.
At this point, Florida Man is probably watchable although it’d be better skipped if something better comes along. The action from the first two episodes hasn’t provided nearly enough justification to binge the series. This episode scores a 5 out of 10. Recaps of Florida Man can be found on Reel Mockery here.
