Valued Customer – As this episode of Fantasmas begins, Vanesja (Martine Gutierrez) reveals she used to go to restaurants and pretend she got stood up to get free dinner. One time, she spent the night with the waiter and learned that all young, straight men were obsessed with collecting empty Gatorade bottles in their bedrooms. She was at a different restaurant being served by a different waiter yet something felt familiar. Regardless of the situation, she found the same symbol. She asked one of the men about the altar, but he only said it’s whatever. Vanesja questions whether they were meant to represent possibilities. She suggests it wasn’t meant for her to understand.
At one point, she leaves an empty Gatorade bottle for the waiter and leaves. In the present, Vanesja speaks to Julio (Julio Torres) on the phone about the mole thing. She reminds him he needs proof of existence for an apartment. Julio meets a doctor and tells her about his problems. He thinks the mole has grown, but the doctor says it’s just a birthmark. Julio asks her about getting a biopsy. He says he can prove it has grown if he can just find the earring. The doctor doesn’t listen and leaves in a hurry. Julio goes back to the club to search for the oyster. Bibo (Joe Rumrill) ends up calling him to say he needs to find an apartment before he gets kicked out. Mona is waiting for him. Julio meets Mona (Brittany Carney) to check out an apartment.
He asks if she has anything more unique like a clock tower or through a well. Mona says he needs proof of life. Julio doesn’t have proof because he doesn’t believe in it. Once he returns, Vanesja tries to get him to fill out the website so he can get proof of existence. Julio stops her and says he should focus on finding the oyster so he can prove the mole has grown. He remembers a little influencer taking it. In the taxi, Chester (Tomas Matos) tells Julio about the trial he’s been watching. An elf named Dodo (Bowen Yang) is using Santa for unpaid labor. Chester says he’s on team Dodo. As Chester keeps talking, Julio learns where the little influencer and his neighbor, Gina, are staying. He goes on a rant about emojis. Julio manages to find Skyler and take him to the urgent care.
Julio has difficulty using his card. The representative for Assembly Plan Insurance talks about how she’s a soldier for the company. Becca soon learns the President’s daughter gets promoted before her even though she’s been there for seven years. Becca (Alexa Demie) decides to burn it all to the ground. She books a vacation but changes her mind and tries to cancel. It won’t let her. Becca calls the company and gets a similar experience to what Assembly Plan has been providing customers. She’s told they cannot cancel because that’s the rule. Julio gets nowhere with the representative. Skyler returns and says he doesn’t have any diamonds in his stomach. Julio puts up missing flyers for the oyster. Skyler creates content. He watches his video until the battery dies on his phone.
Skyler asks Gina if he can use her charger. She complains that Charles left her and she has to move out. Skyler learns she has to move out because Charles pays for everything. Skyler (Jaboukie Young-White) tells Gina (Greta Titelman) that this is canceled stuff. Gina complains about eating all the pasta while Skyler waits for his phone to charge. She continues breaking down so Skyler tries to cheer her up. Gina asks what he’s going to do when all of this ends. Skyler claims TikTok is just a stepping stone for his brand. Gina rambles before telling Skyler that he won’t be young forever. He tells her she’s insane. Skyler goes outside where he speaks to a guy about a new app. As he walks away, he’s told to ask them what happened to Vine and MySpace.
Skyler signs up for the RealUs app just before his phone battery dies. Algorithm arrives and tells Skyler that she gives and takes away. She tells Skyler they need him on the original app where people listen to him. He worries TikTok will disappear or it’ll become something he is not. Algorithm tells him his skills are non-transferable. He’s told that his followers have already left him. Bibo asks Julio about the last time he got laid. Julio thinks it is time to let him go and live his life. He begins learning about incorporeal services.
Fantasmas Review
The second episode of Fantasmas was interesting to say the least. It’s hard to know exactly where the story is going or what is happening in the present. However, it’s clear that there are some good ideas here with the customer service scenes and algorithm.
This probably isn’t going to hit the target for all viewers, but it is surprisingly comfortable even though it doesn’t always make sense. The show is easy to watch if viewers don’t take it too seriously.
Truthfully, this is an odd series to judge. It’s one viewers will have to try for themselves and determine whether they like it. Personally, I can see the potential here and the series is very laid back making it a comfortable watch. It’s a fairly entertaining watch although a bit scatterbrained.
