The finale begins the following day after Jacs Gould (Alice Englert) was assaulted by Raffa (Sean Keenan). Kel Summer (Mia Artemis) flips out when she sees Jacs face and encourages her to go to the police. Jacs becomes emotional and blames herself for what happened and although she ultimately decides not to involve the police, she and Kel do photographically document the event. In the present, the story plays out the same way, with Kathy (Essie Davis) assuming the role of Kel. Once again, Jacs blames herself and chooses not to involve authorities.

Jacs and Angus (Thomas Weatherall) spend some time together at the beach, where she tells him that Kel knew about their dalliance. He’s deeply troubled by this and only becomes even more so when she tells him that they deserve each other. He ends up simply walking away without saying anything further.

Sometime later, Kathy with the aid of Barry (Daniel Frederiksen) attempts to convince Jacs to go to the cops with the tape. This only upsets Jacs and the thought of Barry knowing only makes things worse. Jacs practically tells Kathy to f*ck off and returns to her room where she begins packing. As a last-ditch effort and much to Jacs’ surprise, Kathy shares an emotional tale of the time she was sexually assaulted. Kathy chose to keep quiet about it and according to her, turned out to be one of the worst decisions of her life. Apparently, this does the trick because Jacs tells Kathy that she thinks she knows where Raffa is.

Raffa is stunned when Jacs shows up at his school, but he greets her like an old friend. She wastes little time getting him alone and telling him about having the tape. At one point they are interrupted by Amanda (Alee Scarfone) but she is shooed away and Jacs maintains complete composure. She remains calm even as Raffa takes the stance that they were simply having a good time that got a bit out of hand. Jacs doesn’t make any outright threats, but she does mention making copies as she leaves one behind for him to watch what he did.

As time passes, Jacs works on her relationship with Kathy and Angus. Kathy visits what appears to be Jacs’ solo exhibit where she has chosen the assault photos as her subject. Kathy tells her that her work really is great. She and Angus both admit that they want to make their relationship work, although neither is blind to the immense obstacles standing in the way.

The series ends with Jacs spending an afternoon with Val (Victoria Haralbidou), watching old home videos. Some of the footage appears to not long after the assault, as Jacs jokes about having Herpes of the eye. Some of the footage is at the rave and some of it even features Angus.

 

Exposure Review

Kind of an abrupt ending, although I am not so as much complaining because I’ll take short and sweet over long and exhausting any day. I am not saying that this was spectacular or anything but a lot of writers could certainly learn something from this finale. In fact, from what I’ve seen of contemporary work, they should teach this finale in film school. That said, it did feel slightly unfulfilling and redemptive at the same time. I guess you could say that it served its purpose. I would have liked to learn more about Kel’s death and Jacs’ decision not to involve authorities, I can’t really complain. I’d have to give the episode a 5.6 out of 10.
