The episode begins with Jacs Gould (Alice Englert) confronting Kel Summers (Mia Artemis) at the rave party for cheating on Angus (Thomas Weatherall). She does so in front of Raffa (Sean Keenan) which practically shuts the door on her opportunity there. In the present, Angus picks Jacs up from her failed meeting with ‘Do Not Message.’ It isn’t until he gets her home and admits to being worried about her that she tells him the truth about the meeting.
He doesn’t bother hiding his annoyance over her rash behavior which leads to an argument. The argument not only reveals that Jacs and Angus slept together while he was dating Kel but she appears hurt that he considers it a mistake. He tells her it wasn’t which leads to kissing and fondling. Much to his surprise, she abruptly ends the encounter, claiming that the whole situation is making her emotionally crazy. He surprises her when he admits to knowing who ‘Do Not Message’ is and lives.
The next day Jacs shows up at Jim’s (Ewen Leslie) house where she meets Lola (Kiki Wales) and Faye (Saskia Hampele). Although she misdirects on the spot about being there to buy a bike, Jim appears to know enough to play along. When they are alone, he tells her all about the affair and how they arranged meetings. He claims that Kel’s emotional stability was one of the things that attracted him to her, and he would have never imagined she would kill herself. She asks why Kel kept their affair a secret. He claims that Kel says Jacs would be vengeful and she knew that Jacs and Angus were sleeping together.
Matters only get worse when Jacs returns home to find Kathy (Essie Davis) waiting to confront her about what she discovered from the Bali tape. Kathy wastes little time revealing that she watched the tape. Despite this and her reaction, just as quickly Jacs claims nothing happened. After several minutes, Kathy realizes that Jacs really doesn’t know what’s on the tape.
The tape immediately begins with Raffa’s mock interview where episode 4 ended. Jacs questions Raffa about his darkest fantasy, which apparently is the death of his brother in a house fire. Jacs’ fantasy is being hit by a car and taken to a hospital where the attending physician eventually falls for her. The interview goes from serious to joking and back again but eventually leads to their careers. After revealing that he’s studying to become a teacher, he makes the mistake of asking her if she is going to be a talentless photographer. She immediately takes this personally and says he hasn’t even seen any of her work.
Jacs appears even further stunned when Raffa tells her this is what Kel said about her work. Jacs is initially doubtful, although he appears to be dead serious. It’s not long after this that they drop the debate and begin making out. Jacs eventually excuses herself and turns off the camera in the process. Seconds later, Raffa is shown turning it back on, apparently without her knowledge.
Although they immediately resume where they left off when Jacs returns, it is clear that she is hesitant. The reason is soon revealed when she mentions getting her period. It’s just as quickly revealed that Raffa doesn’t care and isn’t willing to take no for an answer.
The episode ends with Jacs on the floor and being punched in the face.
Exposure Review
I was surprised by the poignancy of the ending scene. It could be that I’ve become slightly invested in the characters and their stories, but Jacs and Raffa did an incredible job with the last scene. Some of this could be attributed to the old home video feel as well, but I was compelled. I’d give the episode a 5.5 out of 10 and can’t wait to see how the series ends.
